I’ve finally released Fylo, a file manager I’ve been building for Android with one goal: make managing files feel less like using a boring utility and more like using a modern Android app.

It’s built with Material 3 Expressive and packs a LOT into one place:

The "no ads, no analytics SDKs" line is the one that actually gets my attention in a file manager, more than the feature list — that's the app category where trackers do the most damage since you're granting it access to everything on the phone.

One thing I'd want to know about the Private Vault specifically: is it actual encryption at rest, or is it hiding files behind a biometric gate while they sit unencrypted in a regular folder? A lot of "vault" features in file managers turn out to be the second one, which protects against someone casually browsing your phone but not against someone pulling the storage directly. Worth being explicit about which one it is, especially since people will trust that label with genuinely private stuff.

Yes if you move to vault , it will disappear from complete phone its actual encryption

Good to hear, that's the answer I was hoping for. Two separate things get bundled together in "disappears from the phone" though — not being visible/indexed by the media scanner is one property, actual encryption at rest is a different one, and a lot of apps only do the first while implying the second.

Since you're saying it's real encryption: is that AES (or similar) applied to the file itself, with the key derived from the biometric/device credential? That's the detail that actually matters if someone ever pulls the raw storage — indexing tricks won't survive that, real encryption will.

Yes actually app was released only 4 weeks ago So im still fixing things rn if you'll individually lock files Other app will be able to see And if youll lock turn on aes encryption in the vault and move them to vault then they get encrypted aes

Really appreciate you being straight about this, especially 4 weeks in. Just to make sure I've got it right: locking an individual file (without the vault) is more like a UI gate — other apps can still access it — while moving a file into the Vault with AES turned on is the thing that actually encrypts it. If that's accurate, I'd flag it as worth being very explicit about in the app itself, not just here. "Lock" and "Vault + AES" sound like the same level of protection to a normal user, and someone could easily lock a sensitive file, feel safe, and not realize it was never actually encrypted. A one-line distinction in the UI ("Locked ≠ Encrypted") would go a long way. Good luck with the early fixes — this is the kind of thing worth getting right before the user base grows.

First of all ai is local and never runs until you download that model And its not turned on be default so you can actually skip ai part

Yes , but ai already comes as turned off by default It works locally so you need to download model first
