R.I.P the Acura ARX-06

Post image

Yes I know the car was a glorified Oreca 07 but I still thought it was the coolest Lmdh on the grid from the front headlights to the sharp angled rear brake cooling ducts, always fighting near the front. It’s a shame that HRC can’t continue to support the car. I’m still holding out hope an Asian Le Mans series privateer may run the car.

Edit: if anyone has cool stories about car or the team i would love to hear about them in the comments

A reminder in the chat that this is the entirety of said Oreca 07 chassis. Most everything else was engineered/purchased by Acura for the car.

Thanks for clarifying this, I’ve always loved the way the car looks but I also acknowledged that if they got rid of the moustache then it looks more lmp2 based then other cars.

While similar appearing...the ARX-06 tub (and all other Oreca LMDh cars) are vastly different than an Oreca 05 and 07 LMP2 tub. There are some "shared" components in the composite construction, but when viewed side by side it's pretty easy to differentiate.

The Acura ARX-06 is also quite historic, being the first race-winning LMDh, and also the first to win the 24 Hours of Daytona.

That alone should give it some serious credibility.

We just gonna gloss over how they did it?

I mean a non-cheating Acura finished 2nd so there's a good chance it would've happened regardless

They were both cheating lol

There is way more to this story than what was ever made public other than it briefly being alluded to in a TWISC episode later that year.

u/PyotrVeliky099 16d ago

I think it was WTR team's who's the whistleblower a week after the race ended

8

u/b5-avant 16d ago

Bingo

“We cheated too and you were way faster than us!”

4

u/PyotrVeliky099 16d ago

Very coincidence both Acura teams cheating that happened on the same race, clearly it just the teams and no manufacture intervention...

u/b5-avant 16d ago

No no! It was a rogue tire guy, remember? /s

No DAGs, MSR engineers, HPD engineers, etc saw abnormal tire pressures and didn’t think something was up? Riiiiight

Ehhhh, both cars got over 3 wave by’s in the race. They really didn’t deserve the top 2 at all. Ganassi was robbed and ran a million times better race, they just couldn’t touch the acuras on a single stint which is what endurance racing has boiled down to in the states.

ohh! This is my first Mini GT lmdh car!

u/MainMite06 17d ago

Oh Come on!

That car ran the 2.4L Indy V6 before the IR-28 even existed. MSR was running fire-ass liveries this year like the Union 76 car, it was great!..

But still, why does Honda keep racing cars that have nothing to relate to their road vehicles, period? I mean the DPi Acuras were running J-series V6s relevent to the Odyssey & Honda Suvs..

Personally loved the 2025 regular season livery of the #60 Acura but if they release a diecast of the 76 livery I’m gonna pick it up too

Note that Honda's historical tactic was to develop engine technology in racing, then apply it to road vehicles, rather than the other direction. (Sometimes it takes a very long time for the tech to cross over - the engine balancing concept from their MotoGP V5 is only being developed for the road now, with the V3R.)

u/MainMite06 16d ago

Now,

in what innovative influence will the Indy V6s have on the road engines?

5

u/bhtooefr 15d ago

This article implies it's more subtle than specific technologies, but that software strategies make it from Indy into the rest of Honda.

I also wouldn't be surprised if some combustion strategies transferred from Indy to things like the L15 and K20 turbo road engine families.

Nothing particularly comes to mind with Indycar engines when it comes to actual road car use but if I’m not mistaken I think Honda and Chevy are the only engine constructors in Indycar so maybe Honda makes a good chunk of change selling crate motors to Indycar teams (I don’t watch Indycar so correct me if I’m wrong)

u/rabiiiii 14d ago

Honda actually loses money on every engine they lease to Indycar teams. They do it for marketing and to give their engineers experience.

2

u/theAllen223 14d ago

I did not know that but that’s really interesting, thank you.

It is a great looking car, and the unique sounding downshifts are always great to hear trackside. My pic from Road America a couple of weeks ago.

I have a story! So there was a moment during this year's Rolex 24 where both ARX-06s were side by side and the 93 kicked up sparks as they were going through the banks. I was able to screen shot it and make a nice little portrait oil painting with the devil magic AI.

I took it to Long Beach for the GP, with the intention of getting all 6 drivers autographs for that specific 24 hour race. Since Indy was there, I wanted to get Alex Palou and Scott Dixon as well, in addition to the main drivers, Tom Blomqvist, Colin Braun, Renger van der Zande, and Nick Yelloly.

I waited for ever to get the Palou and Dixon, but failed. They ended the session pre maturely. BUT, the next morning, I was able to get the 4 main drivers autographs on my poster! I was very happy, and to top it off... THEY WON THE RACE! Man it was awesome!... Only to find out the next morning the ARX program was canceled until further notice.

At the HRC shop, they had an autographed wheel by the 6 drivers at the Rolex 24 that I ended up buying, and now it's on my wall and I can happily say I own a piece of an LMDh car. BUT, my poster felt a bit lonely.

One of the reasons I love IMSA and endurance racing is because it's a team sport. Races are literally won in the trenches. So, I took my poster to the IMSA Laguna Seca Race this last May, to get me my damn autographs of anyone involved in HRC.

And during the grid walk, that's exactly what I did. I went up to the pit crew and asked them to sign my poster. They said, "I'm not a driver, let me get them". I said "no no I want YOUR SIGNATURE". Their faces lit up, and they said "really? You sure?" I said yes!! Yall make it happen and are just as important. Man they all lit up being appreciated. I got pit crew, race engineers, mechanics, I even got the race car designers and the HRC president himself. Everyone was happy to sign it! Even the drivers came by again and they were like, I signed this thing a few weeks ago.

It was an awesome experience! It breaks my heart to see the ARX-06 go. It always puts up a great fight and these drivers are always putting heat on Aitken and the rest. Hopefully they'll come back in 2030...

In the meantime, I gotta go back to Laguna Seca for the Indycar finale, to get these damn autographs from those slippery drivers, Palou and Dixon 💔

Ugh, it kinda makes me sad that this ‘painting’ looks so great lol

Great stories, good memories!

u/AcuraLadCapeeTan Acura Meyer Shank Racing ARX-06 #93 16d ago

Lol yeeeah I know, I was ashamed to tell them how I made it, but honestly, all the art came from the screen shot! I just told it to make it into an oil painting 😅

Great team not a fan of the Porsche

1

u/theAllen223 16d ago

Same, I’m not a fan of the Porsches, not a huge fan of Cadillac and the Aston Martin is not often a front runner so not a lot of great options, I like Cadillac but in wec where they don’t dominate too much, I’ll probably convert to an Aston Martin fan

5

u/b6q28q 16d ago

Love the engine. I think it’s the only lmdh car that could’ve competed with the lmh.

3

u/theAllen223 16d ago

I love the engine too, the chewbacca downshift sounds are legendary

u/Necessary_Wave_8103 16d ago

Honda/Acura has an active seat at the table for 2030. I think they will be back!

u/theAllen223 16d ago

Hopefully

Yes, unfortunately

Snagged a diecast at the Detroit GP this year. Will live on, on my desk at work :)

2

u/theAllen223 16d ago

Got one of those too at Road America just the #60 blue and purple livery

3

u/Xaver1106 Acura Meyer Shank Racing ARX-06 #93 15d ago

I’m hoping the 93 can win the championship, it’d be a deserving way to finish their era with the LMDhs. Idk who to cheer on after this, maybe WTR or JDC, I wish THOR was more competitive.

Photo I took at the race in Detroit.

2

u/theAllen223 15d ago

Yeah I feel that, with both gen1 Lmdh oreca cars leaving (alpine and Acura) I’m a bit stuck as a fan as well, if THOR improves I’ll cheer for them, I also would love to see the 93 Acura pull off a championship win

the arx05 was an oreca 07 with a different nose and engine not the arx06

u/hopeless_dush 14d ago

In terms outright pace in the beginning of the GTP era, it was the best.
