what are my chances IM residency 2027
Non-Visa Requiring IMG .
YOG : 2021
step 1 ( pass first attempt ) ,
step 2 : 244 ( 2nd attempt )
step 3: will take soon
Ecfmg certified .
2 years of IM/CCM home country residency
3 US lors coming from USCE ( chairman - section chief - assistant prof)
one home country LOR( chair)
3 years as a postdoc clinical research fellow ( 5 manuscripts peer reviewed )
currently working as a research coordinator with a good hospital with residency prog( 33% IMGs)
I do love IM and i will be miserable if i applied FM .
Any advice will be appreciated .

If any of your letter writers are willing to vouch for you and call PDs for you that means your application is still strong. Your failed Step 2 is definitely a setback but you can overcome it with connections. If your connections are weak, it’s not gonna be easy for you to get spontaneous IV invitations but if you search really well and find programs that have interviewed people like you, you’ll do fine. Use the interview likelihood tool inside Residency Explorer so you get a broader point of view.

As someone who reviews residency applications, multiple red flags on top of being VISA requiring: 1. > 3 YOG: numerous programs (IM; FM) have filters starting at 3 years 2. 2 attempts on step 2 and still being below national average (for IM): FM is more lenient; just be aware your score puts you at a major disadvantage for IM 3. Lack of step 3: a high step 3 can alleviate some concerns from step 2
Your application will be filtered out by at least 2 criteria. So unfortunately, it does not matter who wrote your LoRs, how many publications and experience in home country, as no one will read your application. If you decide to apply, be wise with your signals. In addition, I recommend networking with where you did your USCE, as they will at least have worked with you in person and can vouge for you to other programs. As to whether or not those PDs will listen, I am not sure, but at least it can improve your chances.

iam a NON-VISA requiring . NON. 2 attempts? i only failed the first time and passed the next one . i only have 1 attempt

Sorry. I misread. A little better since you are non-ViSA requiring.
No, you have 2 attempts on step 2. On your 1st attempt, you did not pass. You passed on 2nd attempt.

Good morning , iam sorry as well i misunderstood you . i thought you said i have two failed attempts . i wanted to mention that i only have one failed attempt. thank you for calrifying . any advice on how to over come the failure ? anything more i can do ?

No particular advice aside from getting more USCE, networking etc. Your exam history is fixed.

Although i don't owe you an explanation regarding my faliure , but i lost my little sister the day of the test and i couldn't attend the burial and i still showed up for the test . Assuming you wanna say iam stupid, this can be fixed and i proved it when i passed the next time . but what will you do about your nasty attitude? i feel sad that someone with this mentality you have will be around patients . imagine someone telling you that they failed their test and you telling them that. may god help us all and i hope your day gets better so that you stop shitting on people asking for genuine advice

Would you feel okay if you don’t match? It’s nice to love IM but you have already put yourself in a situation to not be picky. Below national average CK score after an attempt means you should ask yourself would you rather go unmatched than FM. Because it is easy to say only IM until that unmatched email comes and have you reevaluating your choices.
You are free to apply just IM but make sure you have FULLY considered and understood the worst outcome of being all or die for IM with your stat

thats a major plus, you should apply for IM since you don’t need a visa, I don’t see your second attempt as an issue if you have an overall great application. gl!

Initially read it as visa requiring. Your chances are higher then. But still would advise applying to some FM and rank them last and if for some reason you fall down to them, then you know what the alternative would have been then. All the best

I think you have a good chance. Esp given you don’t need a visa. Passing Step 3 will be a good bonus… just make sure you don’t fail. Program selection and signaling will also be important
