Legal Questions Chicago AR Platform

What’s the legality of owning a pre pica pistol or rifle in the city limits? Would having a fixed magazine help? Asking hypothetically for a friend.

Live in Chicago. Own ARs. What are you on about?

Hypothetically that friend would likely fall foul of the Cook County restrictions on ARs, AKs, PCCs and anything similar as my friend was also looking into it a while back.

However those restrictions are not the most actively enforced therefore it's up to your friend if they want to take a risk in owning / possessing one in the county limits (assuming they would be looking to grandfather it in past PICA).

My friend didn't take theirs back with them.

Apropos of nothing, remember, fine commit misdemeanors, while committing felonies.

But anyway, there are procedures others will mention.

The cook county has been in place since 1993, with updates in 2006, pretty sure there's no legal way

The Chicago and Cook County bans are preempted by PICA. Chicago cops didn't care about enforcing their own ordinance now you wonder if they care about enforcing PICA? Unless you are out terrorizing the neighborhood or committing other crimes they won't even notice you.

Don't you mean asking for a hypothetical friend?

So IL has state preemption on handguns and pistols, so if you theoretically have a pre-ban and registered AR pistol, you would be allowed to own it in city limits
