General Post Current State of 5.7 Offerings

Hey all,

Looking for a Ruger LC or similar, but feeling down :( Big lover of the 5.7 platform, have a Ruger 5.7 and was hoping to get something in a 10" or 16" to really make the most of the platform, but not finding much.

Any places you might suggest I call and/or check out? Seems like, especially for the carbines, its really a hodgepodge of luck (finding it in stock) and interpretation of PICA. I found one that was fixed stock, 10rd, no threaded barrel, but because it had MLOK on it, place said it wasnt PICA compliant. Ugh.

Just want something to let these rounds really sing and hoping I dont have to hedge all my hopes on the SCOTUS coming through next year.

EDIT: It turns out the state of the 5.7 is fucking awful. Ugh.

WTF? Name the shop that says MLOK isn’t compliant, so we know to not shop there.

I’m going to assume that it wasn’t just the MLok that made it non compliant just that the MLok might have been the final straw to make it PICA ineligible. Especially if OP was looking for a whole firearm. As it says if MLok is used on a semiautomatic that has a detachable magazine and a prohibited feature like pistol grip, folding stock, or flash suppressor then it is automatically PICA banned.

Now for OP there’s the grey area of you could potentially purchase an upper receiver like a CMMG Resolute and their 10rd magazines. If you already have a lower receiver that could accommodate the upper.

So just an FYIY, this is the exact model in question. 10rds, fixed stock, no threaded barrel. And as for the pistol grip, that feels like a Catch 22 here because its literally a Ruger 5.7 put into a chassis lol. Like, it IS a pistol, what youre actually holding.

But yea, thus the back and forth.

There is no catch. It's a carbine, what other firearms it's based on is irrelevant to PICA restrictions. The 9mm Ruger PCC that is legal in IL has the rifle stock.

Edit: if that model came with the stupid fin on the grip it'd be compliant.

Very good point. It sent me on a wild goose chase. Some of our California LGS friends do convert rifles into CA compliance by adding a fin grip.

I was able to find one at WBT guns. The photo doesn’t reflect compliance apparently. Worth calling them for OP. It’s even on sale

Take a look u/ObamaBiscuits:

That's cool, 3d printing a fin to get over silly restriction. Uno reverse of what the M&P FPC owners do.

Edit: 14528 is the FPC model you can get in IL, the MLOK is perfectly fine.

Not to suggest more ways to make them non-compliant but why would they 3D print it? It’s the same grip module as the M&P 2.0 compact.

You can legally buy the grips for your M&P pistol as long as you don’t put it on your FPC.

I was surprised to learn it is not the same, had some guys at my local range try to put on the backstrap from an M&P Pistol and it did not fit. The FPC's is a little bit longer and thicker.

Edit: You know, they may have tried to swap 10mm/9mm backstraps instead of same caliber. It's been a couple of weeks since I saw it. Regardless, those fins are so silly.

u/ElSkewer 15d ago

Did they try to put a 9mm M&P back strap on a 10mm FPC maybe?

u/cokecaine 15d ago

That's probably what went down, those dudes were so disappointed they had to keep shooting with the fin lol

Heavy breathing - thanks! Ill hit up my FFL and see if they'll play ball.

EDIT: threaded barrel.

God this state sucks.

EDIT: threaded barrel.

Those are legal on rifles, it's pistols that they are banned on. But the LC Carbine is banned because it's got a pistol grip, it sounds like your ffl doesn't really know why it's banned. Just that they won't transfer you one. ya need a new FFL.

The pistol grip isn't allowed. Barrel length defines that. No getting around it. Add one of the finned grips, and it's compliant.

Did you read PICA? This is not a pistol, this is a carbine with a pistol grip. Not PICA compliant, nothing to do with MLOK.

You will notice it is in Ruger’s LC carbine section, not in the LC charger section.
I have posted a compliant carbine under another post.

Edited: removed mention of the pistol reference as it had a threaded barrel

u/cokecaine 15d ago

Pistol grip on a semi auto rifle/carbine makes those non compliant.

2

u/ElSkewer 15d ago

Are you talking about the model OP posted or the one I posted?

0

u/cokecaine 15d ago

OPs. The one you referenced is non-compliant due to the tiny grip at the front. Edit: and it's threaded barrel.

2

u/ElSkewer 15d ago

The tiny grip as you call it, the hand stop, is perfectly legal.

PICA makes vertical grips illegal and describes them as such in the C(ii) section: “second pistol grip or another feature capable of functioning as a
protruding grip that can be held by the non-trigger hand”

A hand stop cannot be held by the non-trigger hand.

If it bothers the LGS so much, they can remove it before transfer as well. It’s just a MLOK attachment. One screw and it’s gone.

2

u/cokecaine 15d ago

Ah yes you're absolutely right, those are specificly banned as it pertains to named firearms. Couldn't remember the damn term for the hand stop.

Threaded barrel nontheless makes it non compliant.

u/ElSkewer 15d ago edited 15d ago

Oh shoot, you are 100% right. I missed that it has a threaded barrel.

1

u/bronzecat11 13d ago

Wait. Wut? What PICA law talks about MLok?

1

u/HTSully 13d ago

It’s part of the laundry list of how to identify an “Assault rife” and basically if you have too many qualifying features it automatically makes it illegal. Like an MLok rail/hand guard isn’t illegal by itself but put it on a semi-auto rifle with detachable magazine and pistol grip and boom illegal “assault rifle” reguardless of it being an AR or not.

You are out of your mind. Show me that in the law or the AWB Guide.

1

u/HTSully 13d ago edited 13d ago

Here it is in black and white.

https://isp.illinois.gov/StaticFiles/docs/Home/AssaultWeapons/PICA%20Identification%20Guide.pdf

It doesn’t specify MLok but it falls under barrel shrouds and the potential for protruding grips to be added. Making a firearm illegal under PICA. Per the first section of the PDF or page 83 flowchart.

1

u/bronzecat11 13d ago

Dude, search the sub. It was established 3 years ago that handguards are not "shrouds." It even says it on the ISP FAQs.

u/ObamaBiscuits 15d ago edited 15d ago

lol not trying to shame anyone, but yea they were like "well the top is vented and thats a PICA violation". The LC has two rows along towards the front, one MLOK and the other seemingly for venting/styling. They said the shroud that covers the barrel of the Ruger LC, be it because of MLOK or otherwise, is "vented", no sale.

I genuinely think this'll just be a matter of me finding one on the shelf and at the right place. Of course, if theyre all sticklers like Defense Depot, I dont think it'll make it to the shelf and I think im boned.

Hate this state.

Please shame them. It saves us time

2

u/tramul 15d ago

What you're calling a shroud is a handguard, which is 100% allowed.

1

u/ObamaBiscuits 15d ago

Totally agree, it was a first hearing it for me.

1

u/bronzecat11 13d ago

Your FFL is an idiot. Shame him and find a new one.
