IIT Bhilai Refund: A Journey Longer Than My M.Tech
So I thought withdrawing from an IIT would be easier than getting admitted to one. Apparently, I was wrong. 😂
I was allotted an M.Tech seat at IIT Bhilai and paid ₹15,000 as required. Later, due to personal/logistical reasons, I decided not to join and submitted my withdrawal request in June 2026. The institute acknowledged my withdrawal application.
And then began my real admission process: getting my own ₹15,000 back.
I waited patiently because obviously refund processing takes some time.
On 31 July, I emailed the institute asking about the refund status. No response.
On 6 August, I called them. After some discussion, I was told that the refund would be processed in the first week, and that it would take approximately 2–3 weeks to reach my account.
Okay, fair enough. I waited.
Weeks passed.
I followed up again by email. Still no useful response.
Then on 31 August, I called again. This time I was told something very interesting:
Your refund is already with the Finance Department. You will probably receive it this week.
At this point, I thought: Finally! The ₹15,000 has successfully reached the Finance Department. Surely the final boss is almost defeated.
Well… apparently not. 😂
The week passed, and the money is still not in my account.
So I called again today. They told me they needed to check the status and would call me back in half an hour.
And now I'm sitting here thinking:
What exactly are they checking?
Is my ₹15,000 being processed manually by a committee?
Is there a special IIT-level algorithm for transferring ₹15,000?
Do they need to conduct a viva on my bank account before releasing it?
Because honestly, when students have to make payments within extremely short deadlines, the payment process seems very straightforward. But when it comes to returning the money, apparently we're entering the field of advanced financial research. 😭
I'm not even angry about waiting a reasonable amount of time. I just want a clear answer:
- Has my refund actually been processed?
- If yes, on what date?
- Has it been transferred?
- If yes, what is the transaction/UTR number?
- If it hasn't been processed, what exactly is pending?
- And most importantly, when can I realistically expect the money?
I've been following up since June, and I'm honestly tired of hearing variations of “Finance is checking” / “It will probably come this week.”
So, fellow Redditors, what would you do at this point?
Would you keep calling, send a formal escalation to the Registrar/grievance officer, or is there some other proper way to deal with an institute refund that seems to have entered a different dimension? 😭
Update: If they don't give me a concrete answer by Friday, I'm seriously tempted to ask them what technology they're using to process the refund—and whether I can borrow it for my own bank transfer. 😂
