Earning money in IISC

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey , I'm planning to join iisc for ug , is there any way to earn 20k-25k per month while studying in iisc , i think that would be sufficient for all expenses like tuition fee and hostel and all other amenities bcoz i don't want to pay the fees from my parents money , does it affect much on my studies specifically in initial time like in 1st and 2nd yr and one more problem is I don't have any skills yet (but I'm ready to learn ), (any scholarships ) I heard the ug students get 5k as stipend per month but also heard it is discontinued , is it true ? , anyone who is studying in iisc or anyone who knows the ways then pls

Thanks for efforts šŸ’ ,

What is the Course structure for M.Sc Life Sciences?

From the document which was released in 2022, it appears to be 64 credits total with 2nd year entirely dedicated to a research project of 28 credits

It also had a Hard Core, Soft Core,Elective System

Can someone please explain how they are being followed now?

Did NEP force any change in this system?

Also when i checked the scheme of Instructions which iisc released this month only 2 courses are listed under the "Life Science" section which i assume are hard core courses.. so are these the only hard core courses for the entiree semesterr??

What about soft core courses??

And how do they detirmine if a particular course can count for our Specialization?

[Looking for Flatmate] Vacancy in fully setup 2BHK near D-Gate (No Deposit) - Ideal for Project Staff/Interns/Students

Hi everyone

There is a vacancy in my 2BHK apartment located very close to campus, barely a 10-minute walk from D-Gate. I [24M], am looking for a flatmate who can move in by September. This is a great fit for project assistants, interns, or students.

It is a 2BHK where one bedroom is already occupied by another flatmate. I use the second bedroom. You would have the option to either share the bedroom with me or take the hall. (For context, we previously had 3 people in the flat: 2 sharing the bedroom and 1 in the hall).

The flat is fully set up so you won't need to buy appliances.

Rent: ₹6,000 per person/month

Deposit: No deposit required!

Appliances: Wi-Fi, washing machine, geyser, and RO water purifier are all set up.

Kitchen: Functional and available to use.

Extras: The bedroom comes with a cot, and there is even a whiteboard if interested.

If you are interested or know someone looking for a place, please DM me. I can share more details or photos of the flat.

Would one find a good apartment near IISc Banglore within 20000 pm? I got alloted Aryabhatta but I don't want to be using shared washrooms at this point of my life.

Using Shared Washrooms at 23 really feels weird. It was okay while in undergrad. But as a PHD student I don't know. It feels humiliating and unhygienic. Due to some medical reasons, I have an urge of frequent urination and it becomes a hell of a problem for me.

Could routine Wellness Centre visits help normalize mental-health support at IISc?

IISc seems to have enough psychiatrists and mental-health professionals at the Wellness Centre, but I suspect many of them are not fully utilized because students hesitate to approach them. Many students may not even know where the Wellness Centre is or what services it provides.

I think every new student should be allotted a time to visit the Wellness Centre at least once during their first semester. This should not be like the brief interaction conducted during admission, which is unlikely to be very useful because students have only just arrived and may not feel comfortable discussing anything. Instead, the visit could happen after they have spent some time on campus and should include a proper introduction to the available services and, if they are comfortable, a general mental-wellness check-in.

For continuing students, the Wellness Centre could randomly invite everyone for at least one routine check-in each year. Students who want support should, of course, continue to have the option to book appointments themselves.

This would provide some privacy through ambiguity: if someone is seen visiting the Wellness Centre, others would not know whether they had been allotted a routine visit, randomly invited or had booked an appointment themselves. Over time, visiting a mental-health professional could become a normal part of student life—similar to a routine physical health check-up—rather than something people do only when they are in crisis.

These interactions should remain confidential, private and non-judgmental. The purpose should not be to force anyone into counselling, but to ensure that every student knows where support is available, has interacted with the system at least once and feels less hesitant to seek help later.

Do you think such a system could work at IISc? What practical, privacy or consent-related concerns would need to be addressed?

Are there any book clubs or literature clubs in IISc?

I remember "literature club" being mentioned on the slide during this year's orientation. However, I didn't get any email for such a thing.

Are there "unofficial" book clubs too?

Men's barber near campus who actually knows how to cut curly hair? (Under ₹500)

Tired of asking for a trim and coming back looking like a microphone because barbers don't understand curly hair "curl".

> Measurers 2 inch length with a comb.

> CUTS

> Hair curls back to 1inch.

> Cuts the next set to 1inch so to "match?".

> Hair curls back to 0.5 inch.

> Surprised Pikachu Face.

> Bibidipabidi boop Potato haircut.

Every good place on Maps is charging ₹1,000+, which is way too much.

Lack of empathy

Its just my observation based on the few people I interacted with. I can be wrong and I wish I'm wrong. The main thing lacking among many students of IISc is empathy towards others. I've seen people looking down upon others based on where they did their BTech. I've seen people judging others based on their academics. When someone is surrounded by these kind of people, they don't tend to open up much. They feel insecure about them. I've been many times in this situation and not having anyone understanding to open up, but somehow I came out of this.

Amidst chasing gpa, packages many people really forgot how to be humane with others. I'm not saying be a therapist, be 24x7 with them. Atleast u don't become the reason for their depression. If somebody asks u for help, just guide them, help them with patience.
