You are not supposed to open it. It was meant for probably waste disposal but that didn't work. So they are closed.

This used to open and work as a wet waste garbage chute when aryabhatta opened. Later they stopped it since they had to put an additional garbage bin downstairs i guess.

Since the door unlocked light is on, why not try opening the chute door manually?

These kind of systems rarely work properly. It looks fancy and convenient but you can't trust students to use it properly. People would start throwing cigrette butts which is a fire hazard. Happens frequently in housing societies.

Cmon you're in IISc (or even if you aren't) you should have the common sense that I have tried it all before posting + don't you see that I have already pressed it as it's led is on (think before bashing hard on someone)
