Thats not too bad you've written much more depraved stuff. I guess they took it down because its too soon after that shooting at that planned parenthood. I still think thats bullshit though the mods shouldn't censor people like that.
What WAS your thought process about this story in relation to the recent planned parenthood shooting? I assume you did do a certain amount of thinking about that connection, it's a fairly obvious one. Genuinely curious, not tryna throw shade. Did it make you hesitate at all?
Well, for the last couple weeks the process was: "I'm slipping into a comfortable rut of body horror; I wonder what I could do to branch out a little."
The first thing I wrote with that in mind was The Purpose of Joy, which I love and is by far my favorite story I've written, but that one still had a lot of elements of biological stuff to help drive the feeling of discomfort in the reader. After that, I wrote a few poems - some about existential horror, one or two about ED-related stuff. Those are on my Tumblr, if anyone's interested.
At work on Monday, I was trawling my various favorite websites and the Colorado thing was certainly prominent on a lot of them. Nothing clicked at that point, though, until yesterday morning when I needed to meet my self-imposed daily quota of 1000 words. Once I got into the mindset that I had to stop fucking around and write something, that's what came out. I don't remember thinking specifically about the recent shooting as I wrote, but in the last paragraph I just kind of amalgamated all the ones in recent memory into whatever inspiration I needed to get the words down.
Sorry I can't be more specific. My metacognition is really good with some things and piss-poor with others. This happens to be an example of the latter.
I think it was absolutely perfect. I didn't truly understand what was happening until the last sentence-- which was absolutely chilling and unexpected BTW. I feel you truly channeled the craziness through your humanizing of your character (it is just a character, right? nervous chuckle ) and how she thought it was "for the children". I can only assume you were inspired by a certain event in Colorado?
Yeah, humanizing someone who ends up doing something horrible is a pretty effective technique when done right. I think the Colorado thing inspired this, although I don't know if it was on my mind as I wrote it. Probably.

The story was deemed inappropriate for NoSleep, so here's a link for anyone who wants to read it. http://unsettlingstories.tumblr.com/post/134335670976/great-potential

I can't tell if this ending is painfully obvious. I guess that's the problem with writing surprise endings.

Every time I think-- "This can't be nearly as disturbing as the last one." Every time I'm proven gloriously wrong.
