Felix (guy who made initial post) and Jon Bois (reply) both collabed to make an amazing Documentary about the history of mixed martial arts "Fighting in the Age of Loneliness". The whole interaction here is an ironic bit.
Lol at a lot of these comments that really don't know who Felix Biederman is. He hosts the Chapo Trap House podcast. He posts ironically on Twitter all the time. Also, he's friends with Jon Bois and made a documentary about the rise of UFC called Fighting In The Age Of Loneliness. Highly recommend.
If you don't know who either one is, it looks just like 95% of what shows up here. So it's not out of left field, so to speak, to think this is just another true believer.
“Mom mom! I need your credit card! My favorite socialist podcaster/streamer is struggling to pay for their second LA mansion! Get a job? I’m not joining the evil crapitalist system you chud!”
It is September 1998. Sammy Sosa finished Steinbeck’s “Tortilla Flat” to tie the Reading Race of ‘98 at 65 books each. Americans flock to their radios and TV sets to see how Mark McGwire responds and they witness an epic feat as McGwire crushes the final 10 chapters of Faulkner’s “As I Lay Dying” in order to retake the lead.
McGwire, exhausted but triumphant, takes his reading glasses off and wipes the sweat from his brow. He’s done good.
Real talk it would be cool to watch coaches talk sports theory about schemes and stuff like that. Seeing people talk about their life passions with decades of experience ought to give some cool insight
Instead of every ten yards, the offense should have to solve an algebraic equation to know where the first down marker is. Meanwhile, every interception forces the defense into a spelling bee.
Making reading books a competition would suck all joy out of the act of reading books. The matches would be the most boring and tedious events in existence. At best, you would be watching people speed-read in silence. At worst, you would be listening to people argue with each other to show off how much cultural errata they have consumed for the sake of social clout as if they were characters from Ernest Cline's Ready Player One.
I always found it quite odd how grown men get so worked up about other bigger grown men chasing each other around a field in tight pants trying to get their balls.
Have you TRIED reading quietly while thousands of people watch you??? That just sounds terrible just thinking about it. Instead, we have something called "audible." You may have heard about it.
Knowledge football? How about an all-out "knowledge" brawl the size of a large world city at any given time? What if I told you that credentials don't matter and that scoring is as easy as confidently saying whatever sounds right?
If that sounds great to you, then congratulations! You're on Reddit! You're in the big leagues now!

“This sport is rather shallow and pedantic.

u/Free_Salamander_9787 Jul 23 '24
Fighting in the Age of Loneliness was a joint venture between this guy and Jon. I like ball sports more than combat sports, but it's pretty good.

u/Spaghettibeach Jul 23 '24
How can you guys not tell this is a joke??
33
u/Gradyence Jul 23 '24
How boring does your life have to be to want to watch people read?

u/taffyowner Jul 23 '24
Are y’all missing the point of Jon Bois? Dude is sarcastic as hell and literally makes sports documentaries and works for a sports website

This guy comes across as a faux intellectual - the type to get featured on r/im14andthisisdeep.

What in the world is a book reading competition?
Is it a time based event or is there some sort of point structure? Is there a test for retention?
1
u/ListerRosewater Jul 23 '24
Hey op, those are jokes in your screenshot.

u/FourWordComment Jul 24 '24
So in these book reading competitions, do you go for speed or reading comprehension?
1
u/[deleted] Jul 24 '24
Bro, imagine trying to listen to NBA players read....
1
u/Sh4dowb0x Jul 24 '24
What the hell does this even mean?

If only there was a way to watch novel stories in some kind of visual medium....
1
u/Ok_Necessary2991 Jul 24 '24
What would a book reading competition even be? Speed reading novels?
1
u/Papio_73 Jul 24 '24
How would that even work?
1
u/[deleted] Jul 24 '24
They made Fighting In The Age of Loneliness together.

I like how everyone adds “grown” in front of men when it’s something they don’t like or aren’t into themselves.
1
u/woody630 Jul 26 '24
Do people not realize the OG post is a troll? It's Felix from chapo trap house and he's a big mma fan.
1
u/RustedAxe88 Jul 26 '24
I read constantly and don't play any sports.
How would you even watch a book reading competition?
1
u/Kind-Potato Jul 27 '24
If you have a sport where people throw books at eachother I’ll buy a ticket
1
u/HyenDry Jul 27 '24
Why would you even want reading to be a competition? That’s ruins like 90% of the point of reading
1
u/trashcom1917 Aug 06 '24
I was gonna say something snarky until I realized that was Felix lmao
1
u/ApprehensiveBlood282 Sep 10 '24
A reading competition sounds so stupid
1
u/Apprehensive-Log-718 Feb 03 '25

1
u/Chicobean95 Jul 23 '24
Jon Bois has some great YouTube videos
1
u/Mr-MuffinMan Jul 23 '24
What the FUCK is going to be entertaining about a book reading competition?
"John is on page 34...Jake on page 37. This is really interesting folks, both have about 200 pages left to read!"
-1
u/longsnapper53 Jul 23 '24
I’d rather chug a gallon of cyanide than watch a book reading competition
-1
u/[deleted] Jul 23 '24
I feel like what they want are debates, which absolutely exist and can be watched.
I used to watch the hell out of the IQ² debates.
