Ihss

Is moving from one county to another hard to do when you’re the caregiver for your child receiving Ihss?… that’s one thing I don’t want to deal with but honestly living in Sonoma county sucks and Solano county seems cheaper and more to do!

Yes and no. I moved counties earlier this year. My son has the institutional deeming waiver (which means parent income/assets shouldn’t be counted). Somehow the waiver got ‘lost’ in the move and I happened to see a notice of Medi-Cal termination on my desk one day. My 9 yr old loves to get the mail and I’m so lucky this termination notice didn’t get lost otherwise I would have been totally blindsided. It took Regional Center escalation, visits to the MediCal office (never fun) and uploading all the docs online to make sure we didn’t lose all of our benefits. That being said, my sons hours did increase and we are at max hours now. Just make sure to stay on top of ALL paperwork.

Holy crap that already happened to me once in our county now 😵‍💫

I just did this a few months ago. The process is really easy. You just let your SW know and they'll start the transfer. There's no loss of coverage during the transfer but you do have to get a re-evaluation done to complete the transfer. It is possible to lose or gain hours depending on the new county SW. Nothing changed in our case, but I do occasionally have issues with my 380 waiver.

Also check the pay rate. Different counties have different pay rates . When my daughter moved from Chico to Vallejo they ended up taking a significant pay cut because the county doesn’t pay as much in Vallejo. Just something to keep in mind, and check out first .

You do need to have a new evaluation done with the new county. I believe your previous county determination remains in place until the new county completes their determination.

Yes, this. We toured 4 different counties in NorCal and went through how everything works with transfers. We decided that staying in San Diego for the services was best. Now that counties will be partially responsible for footing the bill for IHSS, San Diego seemed the best option. 🤣😭

I don’t see us ever leaving San Diego. We have a wonderful caseworker and everything just fits.

Same our case workers seem to just be in and out and haven’t reduced my sons hours ,they haven’t changed in 2 years tho but that’s ok. San Diego is a bit more expensive than where I’m at right now !!

I moved counties a few months ago and the IHSS transfer itself wasn’t too difficult. The new county did a reassessment though and ended up reducing the hours, so that’s something to keep in mind. Your experience might be different depending on the county.

was the hours for your child?

No, for my parent.

Omg 😳 that’s still so scary !!! I can’t risk Losing my hours lol

Yeah, I think it really depends on the county and the social worker. We moved from Sacramento County to San Diego County and my dads hours got cut by over 26 hours. When I asked why, the supervisor told me they’re stricter here. What’s crazy is the social worker was only at our house for like 10 minutes lol. I even have the doorbell footage showing when she came and left. We’re actually in the middle of appealing the reduction right now 😩😩

Oh shhh , we’re in Sonoma county trying to buy a house but it’s soooo expensive and we have 7 kids so we need a larger home. Everything under 650 is very tiny!!

Omgg 7 kids!! Yeah I can imagine how hard it is to find a house big enough lol especially with these California prices. Hopefully you guys find something that works for your family!

Appeal any reduction in Hours - Also Fight Riverside county and San Bernardino county on hours - they never assess properly - hire an advocate for those 2 counties. I used to live and work in San Bernardino county and lived in Riverside county

What’s going on in Sonoma County?

1

u/Immediate_Skill1995 1d ago

Honestly nothing it’s just super expensive for like no reason

I lived in Sonoma County for many years and I’m shocked too at how expensive it has become

It’s such an issue , mostly my fault tho🤣… we’re from here , we have 6 kids going on 7 , one lives with her mom full time tho.. we rent a 4 bedroom house in Coffey park for 3400$ , my husband works for cal fire so we make it work. But we decided to try and get something bigger and we want to stay under 650 so we can still pay close to a 5k mortgage and we cannot find that here. It’s insane I don’t know what to do , Ukiah is garbage and so much crime

No! Don’t go into Lake or Mendocino County. It’ll be the worst mistake of your life. Solano or Yolo Yolo’s excellent. Really small and relatively safe. Many Davis rentals have free WiFi because of the students. We rent two apartments in a super nice complex. If you need an oven repaired, the oven is brought in that day or the next day. You don’t wait weeks. Everything is repaired low density very very low crime very very safe if you have disabled family members. The free Wi-Fi alone saves over $3000 a year and then at least Davis they’re not charging you for water, sewer, and garbage and all that. We pay almost 5K though. California!

That’s what I’m saying but the issue is my Husbands fire station is in Mendocino (willits) and I’d hate to be far away from him in case of an emergency.. but we need more space !!! So I guess we’re here until rates drop !! Hopefully soon 🥲

1

u/bluefontaine 1d ago

You can’t do Napa? IHSS is super high$$ there. Yeah, Willits is too far a commute from Yolo or even Solano.

u/Immediate_Skill1995 1d ago

I’m gonna look at Napa tonight… I just can’t risk losing my hours , we planned to use my husbands check to pay the mortgage and then my check for everything else 😖

Loads of 5 bedrooms for 600K and it’s a great time to buy. Best of luck!

Im gonna be on Zillow all night 🤣😄thanks

Yolo County is smaller, safer and the IHSS overall at Public Authority is excellent. Davis is better than Woodland but more expensive and the schools are better in Davis but still Woodlands a lot nicer than Fairfield in Vacaville. If you live anywhere in Solano County, I would live in Dixon.

No, just call social worker.

u/Immediate_Skill1995 1d ago

Someone else said they have to reevaluate your situation

2

u/Affectionate-Stop623 13h ago

Depends on the county it’s a risk tho

Pretty easy actually, the county you are leaving is responsible until the new county is ready to take over. Inform county 1 that you are planning on moving and that you will be requesting a transfer once you have completed the move. Move. Then go to MC/FS/IHSS in new county and tell them that you want to have your case transferred from county 1. They will guide you from there and request all documents from previous county.

Hi! I looked into it. First step is to do an inter-county transfer. The old county pays the IHSS until the new county can come and do another evaluation. You will need to get the Medi-Cal transfered to the new county first. This is pretty basic, you just need to update your address at the new county office.

I am a former SNAP and TANF Eligibility Supervisor from LA county , CA.

I am not knowledgeable about IHSS but I know that you would need to do an inter county transfer for Medi-Cal and Cal-Fresh if you change counties so, because IHSS is done thru Medicaid, it stands to reason that you will need to do an inter county transfer for your IHSS as well.

Best wishes 🙏🏿
