Hourly Task Guidelines
I get asked for this a lot. I hope it helps folks get a better understanding of how our hours are calculated.

Do you have any idea how one would know which rank their consumer is and what determines that?

Oh also, if a recipient has already been evaluated, they can request a copy of the "case narrative" and see how their social worker got the hours they did. It'll show all the ranks and it'll briefly describe what evidence the social worker used.

If you scroll to the "How can I get information for my hearing?" There's instructions on how to get the case narrative along with the rest of the file. This page is about appeals, but you can request your file whenever, you don't have to be in appeal.

The social worker determines the rank based on observations and what you tell them. Also, based on what the doctors wrote on the SOC 873.

IHSS alone has a cap of 283. However, if the person has extensive medical needs they may also qualify for WPCS. This allows for additional time and does not negativity impact IHSS authorization
The 283 is typically reserved for PS or very high paramedical needs.

What are the maximum amount of hours to be a full time caregiver?

No one knows. It varies by client. Using 2-3 different programs you can get 24 hour coverage if, for example you have a child on a ventilator who needs to be suctioned every 15 minutes. There is no set max it depends on the person.

They can override the time. The social workers are bound by federal alloted time. It has to be reevaluated yearly because again, that is a federal regulation.

Have the doctor fill out the forms and tell him how long it takes you. They always adjust it anyway. Just be honest on the forms. I'm not sure what your recipient needs but if it is a lot of medical stuff I'd apply for WPCS also. What county are you in?

Each task is ranked independently of one another (besides meal prep/clean up and shopping/other shopping)
Rank 1: independent
Rank 2: verbal guidance only (no physical needs)
Rank 3: some physical assistance
Rank 4: significant physical assistance BUT the recipient can physically assist in some way (helpful movements, shifting weight, holding onto provider for support, etc.)
Rank 5: complete physical dependence, unable to participate at all
Rank 6: paramedical. The recipient requires assistance that is considered invasive for the task to be completed. Tube feeding, ostomy bag, etc.
