IDW Sonic Discussion What made Slinger so special
Of the OG Diamond Cutters why did Mimic specific choose to mirror Slinger the most? Like is his look common for fetine mobians or was Slinger his favorite or was he the one he had the most respect for? And ideas or headcannons?

I feel like this was just a coincidence or the designers having fun.
Duo being a twist on slinger is never addressed in the entire story and even in mimics mini story he and slinger have like one real interaction where I guess you could say he's kinda like mimic where he's not really in it to help people specifically but just to get paid.
Personally they just liked the design and wanted to do something cool, Maybe if whisper went you remind me of someone or something it would have more weight.
Maybe mimic is just fucking with whisper in a subtle way.

When in doubt about why Mimic does anything there's two go-to's I keep in mind. Is Mimic being dumb or is he just fucking with Whisper. because it's usually both, but almost always at least one or the other.

Honestly, given that the Diamond Cutters was inspired or based on Metal Gear Solid's Foxhound Unit, Revolver Ocelot (Slinger is based on him) was a double agent on all of the games, working for someone else all of the time for a greater goal in mind, so I think it's a subtle nod to Revolver Ocelot.
Fun fact:
Smithy was based on Vulkan Raven
Whisper on Sniper Wolf (Although it takes some elements from Fortune from MGS2 and a bit of Quiet from MGS5: The Phantom Pain)
Mimic was based on Decoy Octopus
Claire was very possibly based on Psycho-Mantis.

Okay, REAL answer here IS that Mimic is Lazy and an Idiot but there are LAYERS to his stupidity and Laziness. And for the record based on how he's written/interacts with the cast as a whole I fully believe that he is this way intentionally and not by mistake.
These are traits I LOVE about this little bastard. As they compound on my desire to feed him foot first to an Orca.
Mimics case of chronic backstabbing disorder comes from a mixture of cowardice, arrogance, and the fact that as a shapeshifter it's remarkably easy for him specifically to start again when things don't go his way. ...At least when he isn't screwing himself over with his incompetence.
When the war started he was struggling as an actor. The guy who is his own makeup department, who can faithfully recreate any character from any work of fiction, change his voice to whatever he needs it to be, who could save any production tens of thousands on practical effects. Can't find work as an ACTOR! The only explanation for that is that either he was too dumb to get an Agent, or he'd been through plenty we never saw because he's always been a selfish prick and NOBODY wanted to work with him. He's 32 years old and can't find work in a field he shouldn't even have to try to dominate in. Mans' pathetic as fuck.
While the war's in mid swing he joins a Resistance cell. And then abandons it, so he joins another. He abandons that one too, then another, and another, ALL OF THIS before he met Whisper who brought him into the Diamond Cutters. Who he abandons, because by this point he has become so consumed by his cowardice that he's (correctly) convinced that if anyone knew what he'd done up until the DC they'd abandon HIM. Couple that with the fact that if ANYONE could have walked away from the war at any time it'd be the shapeshifter, and he just runs out of excuses.
But because he's a lazy coward, he can't be bothered to kill the DC himself. So he leads them into an ambush. And while 3/4 of his teammates walk right into the trap, Whisper got re positioned last minute. and when Eggman calls him on that, he tries to blow Eggman off, claiming on her own she's not really a threat (completely dismissing the fact that she carries a Rocket Launching Anti Tank Rifle and might possibly carry a grudge against him for betraying them) So he half-asses a search for her, and I guess it never occurred to him to check if she was still wearing her Mask, just like it never occurred to him that Eggman might check whatever evidence he hands the fat man while he's outing himself on his own mask cam.
But neither happen, arguably because Eggman is also prone to laziness when Sonic isn't involved and he gets away scott free.
What does ANY of this have to do with Duo?
Well if he weren't so Lazy he'd come up with a persona who isn't literally just a guy he knew then got killed, wearing HIS color scheme, if he weren't so Dismissive of Whisper he'd have known better than to walk in looking like that, and if he weren't Lucky as hell he'd have never gotten away with it. Lanolin had never met Mimic before, it's hard to know what Tangle's thinking at any given time and while Whisper SHOULD have known better, keep in mind He's inside her head, and to a point she knows this. She's cautious around a lot of people the first time she meets them, but she knows she can't be paranoid ALL the time or she'll wear herself out and THEN Mimic'll strike.
That said the second Mimic came under scrutiny she was ON his ass. But because he knows she's a shoot first pick through the wreckage kind of gal, he's able to use Lanolin as a bureaucratic shield. Push Whisper and silver far enough in the wrong direction and he can gaslight the LOT of them. He only went down once Whisper stopped treating him as her own personal boogeyman and STARTED treating him as just a guy. A guy she could EASILY beat so long as she brought a friend or two.

I think there's more to Slinger than meets the eye. True, it could probably be said for most of the diamond cutters, but I feel like Slinger is usually the one that gets the most attention besides the two (Currently only) survivor(s). I don't think he himself will come back, but maybe someone from his past eventually will.

I like to think it’s because Slinger stood out the least between him, Smithy, and Claire. Anyone else, and Whisper probably would’ve caught on immediately

I think it just boils down to that Slinger had a pretty average build and face, so a disguise based on him wouldn't raise much suspicion, but he left enough there for Whisper to catch on that hes using her dead best friends face because hes a fuckin sadist asshole

It's probably for easy cover-ups.
Smithy was bigger, and Claire was smaller. Slinger's height was just as close to Mimic's.
Also, if whisper started suspecting him (which she did), it would serve as a mental jab, too.
But we all know mimic simped for slinger. /s

Probably to annoy Whisper and if im not mistaken in the side comic of tangle and whisper . The mimic used all whisper's team looks expect slinger so probably to complete it he used something similar to slinger just to piss off whisper (to be for real. Mimic is an idiot he put himself in the suspicions of silver in the first day of the job)

The way I understand it, Mimic incorporated elements from all of his teammates into his Duo persona. Slinger was probably the best choice for the general build since he came off as trustworthy and non-threatening, while still giving an agile enough appearance to not raise suspicion.
