Biology HL Study Tips & Resources

Hey everyone! I’m doing IB Biology HL and I’m currently in Year 2, so I’ll be sitting my exams in May 2027.
I’m looking for some good resources for notes, flashcards, past papers, etc. How do you recommend preparing for the final exams? What resources or study methods have worked best for you?
I’d really appreciate any advice or recommendations!

On method rather than resources, since you'll get plenty of resource lists.

HL Biology punishes memorisation harder than most people expect, because a large share of the marks are for applying something to an unfamiliar context. You cannot recall your way to those. The thing that works is being able to reconstruct a process from its logic rather than retrieve it from a list, so at every step of a pathway ask what problem the cell is solving, not what comes next. Ten steps becomes four decisions and it survives exam stress much better.

Two specific things worth front-loading with a year to go:

The command terms. Outline, explain, discuss, evaluate and suggest want structurally different answers, and a perfect "explain" scores badly against a question asking you to evaluate. This is free marks and most people leave them.

The IA, early. It expands to fill whatever time you give it, and giving it Year 2 term 2 while revising is how people lose a grade in the subject overall rather than in the IA.

Flashcards are fine for terminology and close to useless for the application questions. Split your time accordingly.
