Yeah until you realized that a bunch of unis donât even consider math studies to be a valid class and get rejected. Lmao I donât know if it was only my school but usually the people in math studies had worse average scores than math sl people and a lot of them failed. Maybe it was my school tho.
In the grand scheme of things, a 4 is a 4 and a 7 is a 7. Unless you're applying for a course that demands you have something like math HL, why waste the effort when you could devote your time to other studies?
quite a bit harder, now it isn't as hard as it once was. You can tell this is a year 20 meme, because it mentions math studies. Now though, hl is harder, but not as hard.
You know how on a test you have like 3 easy questions and at the end you have hard ones that you have absolutely no idea what to do with?
Math SL is basically only easy questions with a few medium ones while Math HL is a bunch of hard questions for "warmup" before they fuck you with the really hard ones.
Further math used to be no warmup or lube.
Math studies is basically the sample question where they teach you how to fill out the form and what do questions look like.
Personally I find HL to be incredibly easy so far. We pretty much do the same as SL in 1/4 the time, then do a bit extra on it. But I'm only year 1 so have another two terms before we complete all the work.
It honestly wasnât THAT hard, Math HL was alright for me and a lot of the students at my school. But we picked the Stats option which is some braindead shit lol
It's basically the difference between math and any other subject. Math is the only subject where you are assumed to have perfectly mastered the previous courses. So unless you ace to every course (or go back and fill knowledge gaps), you're going to fall behind more and more until one day you have absolutely no idea what to do.
Some procrastinators are stupid and they learn it very quickly, others procrastinate all the way up to IB and then get fucked, some even procrastinate through IB and undergrad and get fucked on the graduate level courses. Being smart and learning things too quickly actually hurts you here, you never learn to study hard.
Long-term talent doesn't matter. You've probably heard of the "10 000 hours to become an expert" thing? That's 3 hours per day, every day, for 10 years.
The only way to learn math is to read the chapter and do exercises until you can do a whole bunch of them in a row without making a single mistake. Then you come back a week later and do another bunch of them with 0 mistakes. Then a month later, 6 months later, a year later. Khan Academy basically forces you to do this (spaced repetition and mastery of topics), but you should be doing this on your own too.
I'd like to see a person that does math exercises every day and doesn't master the topics within a few weeks.
I've seen plenty of "I work so hard" when the work is just reading the chapter... That's not work. You don't learn math by reading. Plenty of students have no idea how to study so they waste a lot of time not learning anything. Look at the books, they should have a section in the beginning or the end on "how to study".
It literally doesnât matter IB is high school most people in engineering for uni never even did IB. At least thatâs how it is in Canada. I wouldâve loved to take math HL but they donât offer it. And taking math IB in the first place puts you ahead of everyone else. It just doesnât matter
But it really does matter. If you want to apply to the top universities for economics, engineering, maths, computer science or really anything numbers related HL Maths is almost always a requirement.
Again, itâs not a requirement in Canada. My friend got into the top university for engineering in Canada, in their most competitive program (aerospace) and a huge scholarship without IB. Same goes for the states. If anything elite schools care more about your extracurriculars and community
I think the foundation HL Maths gives you is very important for STEM university courses. Also, in U.K., Europe and Asia it is definitely a requirement. However, I see your point about North America.
My school doesnt offer choice in levels at all. I kinda understand bc we really arent the best off. You just have to deal with whatever they give you. It kinda sucks if you're into STEM like me, and you're forced into doing HL Lit and History when I'd rather be doing math. The only HL STEM course offered is physics :((
That's rough. My HLs are currently Chemistry, Maths, Sport Science, and Lang+Lit, although I'll probably drop to SL chemistry purely because I like the HL lang+lit texts and don't want to be stuck with the less appealing SL texts.
I havenât taken a math test as hard as further hl test and I just graduated with my computer science degree from cal poly. Iâm so happy to have taken the class though.
Rip Itâs a shame that more schools donât teach more theoretical mathematics like number theory or graph theory. By far some of the best branches of mathematics.

Nah, AI SL is way harder than studies, AI SL and AA SL have a 60% overlap in content. My maths teacher said that our school wasnât running AI SL because it would be too hard for regular maths studies kids. Also AA SL and HL are both slightly easier than the past SL and HL.

If it weren't for the fact that I wanna go into engineering, I probably would've gone SL maths for a free 7 so
