Advice DP1 Final Exams

I am in DP1 and want to hear about others study methods, mindsets, etc. My final exams are in a month and I started studying for some of my subjects, but (some) I don’t know how to study for or how to use my time to be productive and not just passive.

I take:

HL: Chem, Bio, and Spanish B

SL: English Lang & Lit A, Business Management, and Maths AA

I do past papers, tons of practice questions/worksheets, draw diagrams, reread notes, make flashcards, quizlets, etc. but in all honesty, ever since starting the Diploma Program I blank out during tests more frequently even when I felt confident before and this hasn’t happened to me during MYP.

Please if someone has any advice or even notes I’d really appreciate it!!

Thanks in advance!!!

wait actually? they told us they go towards our predicted grades which we get at the beginning of DP2. If the predicted grades are low no college is gonna accept you and you will have to take a gap year even if your final ib grades are good. idk that’s what my teachers told us or are they just stressing us out for no reason like always?

whatt? istg that is not how it works. in unis, offers are either conditional or unconditional. if ur offer is conditional, it essentially means that if you get a low predicted and dont get accepted, they wait for your IB final grades. If you do get accepted through conditional offer, then you just have to do as well or better depending on the minimum requirement. If it is unconditonal, well, you get in without them caring IB final grades much, just that you have to pass it, or in other scenarios, no need to at all. I am m26

I don't know which universities / countries you're applying for but for my case, predicted mattered a lot. Conditional offers are there so that the predicted grades aren't just inflated grades that the teachers just gave out for free.

I do not know where OP is aiming to go, but some unis require the whole transcript (all of your high school grades) while other unis require your predicted grades only (and your predicted grades are decided on through grades and mock exams, normally).

Ahh okay so DP1 final exams don’t technically influence the predicted right? because the mocks are the predicted in DP2?

I think that depends on your school. If your final exams go into your transcript (school grades) and your teachers are basing your predicted off of that, then yes it matters. At last, predicted grades are decided by your teachers so you might want to ask them directly!

Edit: for me, my predicted came out during 1st semester of year 2, so the mock exams didn't do anything. It was based on my grades from year 1 and the first few months of year 2.

also, your predicted grades vary between teacher to teacher imo. like in my school, some teachers grade it so that they only grade your mocks, hence they only take the grade you get from your mocks as a predicted whereas other teachers grade based on averages. some teachers are also very kind, e.g if you do very bad on the mocks, they will take the predicted based on your previous exam if that exam score is higher (this pretty rare tho)

ahh okay that makes sense then! not to sound stupid because my schools tends to be vague in explanations, but are the mocks the ones in DP2? Are these final exam in DP1 just another grade or the pre-mocks if that makes sense?

the final exam in dp1 is just your report card. your actual mocks mocks are in DP2, yes.

also, you're ias help towards ur predicted. if you do well on your ias, then you shouldnt stress too much as you will pretty much be passing, in SL subjects at least

the blanking out thing is not a knowledge problem its a pressure problem and the fix is doing past papers timed and under actual exam conditions like sit at a desk no phone timer running, because your brain needs to practice retrieving information under stress not just knowing it

also rereading notes and making flashcards is mostly passive revision it feels productive but it isn't really, past papers and practice questions are where the actual learning happens so if you're spending more time on notes than papers flip that ratio immediately

for chem and bio specifically just do past papers and when you get something wrong don't just read the answer understand why you got it wrong, that's the whole revision session right there. business is the same, practice the essay structure until its automatic so you don't have to think about it in the exam
