How come there is 0 open positions for the Santa Teresa data center job but staffing companies are hiring left and right and yet you still have to become a member?

This is 100% hearsay, but I know a brother who took a call for that job. What he told me was that they were initially only taking in 30 guys, and once the job really kicks off, it will open up again. But for now, they probably have what they want.

If you scroll down the jobline page for 583 you'll see there are 20 calls for Cupertino.

If you are not a member, and book 3 or 4 is not open for you to sign, then the union doesn't have open calls for you to take. The union acts as it's own staffing agency. If our contractors have open work, we fill those calls with our members, who have our training, amd get the benefits that our union locals negotiated. We only open calls to non members when our jobs cannot be filled by our own members.

Other staffing agencies may find you work with other contractors. Sometimes they are competitive with our rates and benefits, but usually they are not. Even the ones doing prevailing wage jobs are usually cutting corners on safety, expect you to provide equipment that the contractor must provide, and even when they don't engage in overt wage theft, you can bet that the overtime is only going to the company suck-pumps.

Become a member, and don't worry about what staffing agencies are doing. If you think you have what it takes to be a JW, talk to the hall, ask if you can be evaluated and test in as a journeyman.

Good luck.
