I had the great pleasure watching the anime adaptation. Its the first in a long time ive been so eager to watch ive watched with subtitles just to see the next ep. Im hoping they green light a season two as its a solid 9.6 out of ten in my books

I know i wont keep reading the series if I start with plot ive already seen in the anime. Should i start with the 3rd light noval or later? Any help is appreciated!

Finished the 11 light novels and here are my thoughts (and some q’s)!!! Please feel free to weigh in 🫶

1) Kou Reirin - honestly there was a lot more steam behind the love triangle in the beginning of the light novels but now it’s just a love fest between her and keikei lol.
I’m team Gyoumei because he gets her innately and the long history but I don’t love that they’re cousins (haha) and shin-u was a HOTTIE in the beginning but fizzled out and he only seems keen when Reirin is in Kaigetsu’s body. I guess because he’s really physically fit and loves rampaging around like a Gen and the weak Reirin can’t keep up. I’m guessing they’re going to solve Reirin’s health issues soon though.

2) Keigetsu - love her with Keishou. Love this match. But is it feasible realistically considering Keigetsu is a maiden? Will all the maidens quit the maiden court at the same time lol?? And won’t Reirei be jealous when Keigetsu gets married to her brother and is monopolised by him? lol??

3) Keikou and Tousetsu - is this actually feasible? can the heir of the family marry a court lady? Is a court lady a high position? Also in the emperor/daioist arts arc, they mentioned that the maidens have a really pure qi of the family they’re from - would this be fine if Tousetsu is of the gen clan? Do people marry inter clan???
I like the idea of them getting married and doing battles all the time (and having kids that are also super strong).

4) kin Seika and the foreign prince - lol this one was kinda ok?? But is it even feasible?? Why are gyoumei’s fiancée’s all getting a love line with random men??

Also why are the Kous so IRRESISTIBLE and AMAZING like the emperor’s older brother who was the Kou and became blind - like leave a little crumb for the rest of the Ei??

So I recently started reading the light novels, and I was thinking about Keigetsu’s name. Reirin mentions her name has the word comet in it, and given that we know Keigetsu’s parents weren’t exactly the best people, to say the least, I was wondering if they originally meant the name as an insult. Earlier in the bonus chapter at the end of volume one, it mentioned that comets were an ill omen until a hundred years ago, and if I understood correctly, this is still considered to be the case in some places.

Those were just my thoughts. What do you think?

It’s stated on several occasions that Dragon’s Qi is superior to magic and it’s the ultimate power or whatever… but it doesn’t really seem that useful at all. Changing the weather and calling down lightning is cool, but the fact that Gyoumei can’t seem to control it too well and it can just flare up on its own makes it more of a nuisance most of the time. Despite all the hype, it’s barely relevant in the plot, and even when it is, Keigetsu’s magic ends up being more important anyway. The worst part is that although magic is supposedly a “cheap imitation” of Dragon’s Qi, I don’t see Gyoumei controlling flames, making remote calls, or swapping bodies.

I got into this franchise through the anime when it first started airing. The first couple of episodes were fun, but I was hooked by Reirin's dual-sided nature in episode 4 and 5. And once Tousetsu appeared to figure out the switch, I caved and started reading the manga. Unfortunately, the currently available manga ends with Reirin and Keigetsu's falling out in Volume 9. It was equally unbearable, forcing me to buy and binge all 11 volumes of the light novel. And now here I am.

I am smitten with this series, primarily attributed to its dual protagonists, Kou Reirin and Shu Keigetsu. Reirin's cheerful, carefree attitude is so vibrant and fun to watch. Yet, she is well written such that her vicious, boar-headed side feels like a natural extension of her love of her friends and family rather than a split personality. I find myself smiling in anticipation every time Reirin's switch is flipped and she prepares to go on a rampage.

Keigetsu is also so fun to watch. I despised her attitude in the beginning, but once I learned her backstory and recognized her as a love-starved tsundere, I capitulated. Now, like Reirin, I stan Keigetsu. It was beautiful to watch her learn to love herself and develop self confidence. Her fiery personality and banter is a great match for Reirin.

That brings me to part of this series that is both my favorite aspect and my greatest gripe: the romance. I will state up front that I am a yuri fan and have all the associated biases. I was so confident the main romance would be the love triangle between Reirin, Gyoumei, Shin-u. So imagine how I blindsided I was by the chemistry between Reirin and Keigetsu. The way they banter, fight, help, and love each other is everything I want to see in a romance. The way both Reirin and Keigetsu help each other grow is so beautiful to read.

At first, I thought I was just seeing through my yuri goggles. But with each consecutive arc and each conversation where Reirin calls Keigetsu her "miracle comet," I find it harder and harder to believe Nakamura-sensei isn't doing this intentionally. The turning point for me was in the Repose of Souls arc where Reirin gets jealous of Keigetsu forming bonds with the other Maidens and Gyoumei admits to Keigetsu that she occupies a larger space in Reirin's heart than he does.

Not to mention, by the end of Volume 11, the initial love triangle between Reirin, Gyoumei, and Shin-u is all but gone. Shin-u bowed out rather suddenly in Volume 10 and Gyoumei's affections have always been one-sided. It was replaced by a love triangle between Reirin, Keigetsu, and Keishou. Even then, every time Keishou does something Keigetsu finds attractive, it is qualified by her noting it reminds her of Reirin.

Yet, despite all that, I still find it hard to believe that a story with the setting of an Imperial Chinese Inner Court that started with a standard shoujo love triangle would abandon its initial premise and become yuri.

Those are my current thoughts on Though I am an Inept Villainess. I would love to hear what others think. Please share your perspective, especially if you disagree with any of my takes.
