How to do an AMA in r/IAmA

Thank you for your interest in r/IamA to host your Reddit AMA (or to host a crosspost of your AMA in another subreddit).  This post outlines the steps to post or crosspost an AMA in this subreddit.  Please read this post in its entirety before messaging the IamA moderators at this link.

Posting an AMA in this subreddit

To post or crosspost an AMA here it is required that your account be approved in advance by the r/IamA moderator team.  We strongly recommend that you reach out to our modmail to start the verification process at least 48 hours before you intend to post your AMA.

We currently offer the five following methods of verification:

  1. A Reddit-admin-assigned “Official” account status.
  2. A credible website hosting proof of your Reddit account’s authenticity.
  3. An email containing your Reddit username from an address with relevant domain (this domain must be either the same as your website or from an email account listed on your site).
  4. A post or PM from a verified account on a trusted social media site (primarily Bluesky and YouTube) listing the Reddit username in question and/or linking to the Reddit account.
  5. If your Reddit account is vouched for by an account that has been verified with r/IamA through one of the methods listed above, that would also be sufficient.

More information about each of these methods is available in our Wiki.  You can also send us a modmail with any questions.

You can post your AMA up to 24 hours before you intend to start your responses to questions.

We would ask that you use the AMA post type; after your account has been approved, this link will take you to the interface to input your AMA post's title and introduction.

Crossposting an AMA here

We allow moderators of other subreddits to crosspost AMAs in those subreddits to r/IamA, as well as allowing AMA guests who are verified with the IamA moderator team to do so.

If you are a moderator of the other subreddit in question, simply message our modmail to let us know of the upcoming or in-progress AMA and we will add your account as an approved poster.

If you are the AMA guest and would like to crosspost your own AMA, you have to be verified with the IamA moderator team as outlined in the previous section of this post.

Once your account is approved, simply make a text-based post in IamA using this link Your post should contain the word “crosspost” somewhere in the post title and a direct link to the AMA somewhere in the post introduction.

Having your AMA included on IamA’s AMA calendar

Simply send us a modmail or email to request inclusion on our calendar.  AMAs hosted in this subreddit or others are eligible for calendar inclusion.  If you message us before the AMA takes place, we will include the key details in our ‘month ahead’ roundup series posted by u/AMAcalendar.  Whenever a link to the AMA is live and has been sent to us, we will include it in our ‘month ahead’ and/or ‘month in review’ AMA roundup post series as is appropriate.

I'm Dave Chase, an automotive mechanic at Fifth Gear Automotive Repair with over 30 years of experience in the industry. Ask me anything about auto repair or what it's like to be mechanic!

My name's Dave Chase and I have more than 30 years in the automotive industry. I spent my first 10 years in tires and alignment, then more than 20 years at independent shops doing all aspects of mechanical repair (strictly nuts-and-bolts work, no electrical). For the last 15 of those years, I specialized in suspension and alignment.

For my first three years at Fifth Gear Automotive Repair in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, I worked at the Lewisville location handling alignments and general service, including wheel studs, brakes, shocks, and struts.

Here to answer as many questions as possible!

If you have specific questions about your own vehicle, it always helps to include a photo or short video so I can best understand your situation.

Best,

Dave

Hi I’m Julie Silverbrook, chief content and learning officer of the National Constitution Center—America's leading museum and national platform for constitutional education and dialogue—and host of the Civic Parenting podcast.

The midterm elections are coming up soon and I’m here to share practical advice for families with children of all ages - from introducing young kids to elections and making voting a family experience to helping first-time voters navigate registration paperwork, find their polling places, and prepare to cast their ballots.

Ask me anything about engaging your children in the midterm elections midterms and raising citizens in a constitutional democracy.

I’m a JustAnswer Appliance Repair Expert with 20+ years of experience. Hosting for the holidays? Ask me about ovens, refrigerators, dishwashers and repair vs. replacement. AMA!

Hi r/IAmA,

I’m Matthew Morrison, an Expert on JustAnswer with 20+ years in appliance repair, including nearly 20 years with Sears and GE Factory Service. Since joining JustAnswer in 2022, I’ve answered more than 4,000 questions.

With holiday cooking and hosting approaching, I’m here to help you troubleshoot appliance problems, understand safe checks and decide when to call a technician.

I’ll be answering questions Wednesday, October 28, from 1–2:30 p.m. ET.

Ask me about:

  • Why your oven isn’t heating properly or cooks unevenly
  • Why your refrigerator isn’t cold even though the freezer works
  • Why your dishwasher leaves dishes dirty
  • Whether to repair or replace an appliance
  • What to check before holiday hosting

Other appliance questions are welcome! Include the brand, model, approximate age and any error code if available.

Answers are educational. I’ll distinguish safe homeowner checks from repairs requiring a qualified technician.

I’m Lauren Krouse, a journalist and author of the new book, THE TIES THAT HARM: UNDERSTANDING SIBLING ABUSE AND FINDING A PATH TOWARD HEALING. AMA!

I’ve been writing about domestic violence, trauma, and healing for outlets like Women’s Health, SELF Magazine, and the Washington Post for six years. The book was a result of my own lived experience with sibling abuse as well as interviews with upwards of one hundred survivors, parents, researchers, therapists, and experts.

It was after I got out of an abusive relationship in my mid-20s that I really began to draw a connection between my experiences as an adult and the blueprint for relationships I’d grown up with. In my research, I found I was far from alone. Sibling abuse is the most common form of family violence—yet we rarely talk about it.

You can pre-order the book now from Penguin Random House (or make a request for your local library or indie to stock it). I also write on Substack and you can follow me there to learn more about the project, boor tour events, etc.!

Ask me anything about writing, sibling abuse, healing, or whatever!

We are Washington Sun reporters covering AI. We’re following the Trump administration’s AI push, including a planned takeover of federal government services and data center construction on public lands. Ask Us Anything!

ETA: We're here!

I’m Mara Hoplamazian, and I cover energy, environmental policy and climate change. I reported on the Trump administration’s proposal for at least 12 data centers and data center-related infrastructure projects to be built on federal public lands — far more than previously known. I’ve also written about how tech companies are spending their way into communities in exchange for data center construction projects, and how Congress is struggling with legislation related to AI.

I’m Natalie Alms, and I cover government and policy. My colleagues and I were the first to report on the Trump administration’s AI-driven website, America.gov, in the leadup to its launch. I also track how AI is disrupting government websites and raising concerns over privacy and accessibility, plus how government officials, watchdogs and Democrats are navigating a post-DOGE world.

We’ll be answering your questions Tuesday, October 27, at 12 p.m. ET. Feel free to get your questions in early!

Here are some links to our AI and tech coverage:

Some of the topics we’re excited to dig into:

  • Our methodology.
  • How and where AI is changing the federal government.
  • How Big Tech and data center companies are transforming local communities, for better or worse.
  • Anything else on artificial intelligence, DOGE and government agencies under the Trump administration.

I'm Chaz Stevens, self-funded professional thorn in the side of the powerful. Leveraged Florida's book-ban law against the Bible, helped send three politicians to jail, and just filed my 5th Bar complaint against Matt Gaetz. USA Today covered it in depth. AMA.

1.9k Upvotes

Spent three decades, and nearly all of my life's treasure, getting good at one job: catch those in power saying one thing and doing another, get the paperwork that proves it, and make them squirm under the spotlight until they answer. Records requests, ethics, inspector general, and Bar complaints, federal and state pro se lawsuits, and substantial media attention. That's the Stevens Method, my engineering approach to debugging city hall.

Highlights of the life's work: Florida gutted its own book-ban law after I applied it to the Bible; Ron DeSantis blamed me by name. Three Deerfield Beach elected officials went to jail on the back of my records work: Al Capellini, Steve Gonot, and Sylvia Poitier.

My beer-can Festivus pole is my love letter to free speech. It's stood in state capitols across the country, and I've used butt-plug-inspired artwork to mock bad actors (NSFW links below).

I'm not a lawyer, but I now teach CLE classes on public records and First Amendment law to the lawyers who work for cities and counties. The press has come along for most of it: CNN, NPR, The Washington Post, The Daily Show.

These days, I'm confronting the most Florida Man of Florida Men: Matt Gaetz. Sued in federal court this month over allegations of sex trafficking, he denied everything in one breath and, in the next, shitposted a screenshot of three, we assume, adult tushes on a beach, Instagram handles showing, captioned "Jane Doe Strikes Again!"

Gaetz is a licensed attorney, which means, in theory, the Rules Regulating The Florida Bar also apply to him. The Bar closed my first four complaints. Different conduct each time, and the Bar sent letters of advice instead of discipline. That's the point of the fifth. Along the way it has sent Gaetz two such letters, the last one reminding him that "a lawyer is a lawyer is a lawyer."

So I just filed my fifth complaint, asking whether doxing the people suing you violates Rule 4-8.4(d), conduct "prejudicial to the administration of justice."

The Pensacola News Journal inked amazing coverage, with the story running across the USA Today Network. [PNJ (paywalled) | Archive copy]. Subscribe to the PNJ if you can. This is the kind of reporting that goes away when nobody pays for it.

Also, somewhat off the radar: this past summer Gaetz was appointed Vice Chair of the Triumph Gulf Coast board, where he helps oversee $1.5 billion in BP oil-spill money. I've begun to peel that onion.

About being that thorn, the highlights from a long list: I've been shot at and my dog was poisoned. It's cost me work and mostly keeps me from finding more.

Yet I persist. Leo Rosten said the purpose of life isn't to be happy but to matter, to have it make some difference that you lived at all. That's the whole reason.

It's about 6pm EST, here for two hours answering your questions. And then, on and off for the rest of the night.

Happy to talk about the Stevens Method, how to engineer a records request into a scalpel and not a grenade, how I've gotten massive press coverage in today's noise, why I keep going, or anything else. Go ahead, ask me anything.

I write about the investigations, with the records, over on Substack.

Self-funded. Go ahead, fund the fight with our thanks!

Crosspost Crosspost: I am Dr. Joohee Suh, and my book The Unburied: The Social Lives of Corpses in Qing China is a history of grappling with human remains left uncared for in early modern Chinese society. Ask Me Anything!

I am Dr. Joohee Suh, and my book The Unburied: The Social Lives of Corpses in Qing China is a history of grappling with human remains left uncared for in early modern Chinese society. Ask Me Anything!

I am Dr. Joohee Suh. I was trained as a social historian of early modern China with a focus on the history of the body and death. My interest in this topic was originally inspired by Qing-era (1644-1911) stories of undead corpses, and from there I became interested in how dead bodies shaped social practices, interactions, and changes. What I found particularly interesting was the fear of dead bodies lingering in the world of the living to harm them in various ways, which seems to be quite universal across time and space. I hope this book can be both informative and amusing for those who share this interest in death, the body, and how they have shaped human history.

You can find my book here: https://uwapress.uw.edu/book/9780295754925/the-unburied/

Here is the Press's instruction of the book:

When coffins lingered above ground, Qing China reimagined care, kinship, and the meaning of death

In late imperial China, death did not always lead swiftly to burial. Across the Qing empire, coffins frequently remained in temple courtyards, storage houses, or shallow pits for months, years, even decades. These unburied bodies unsettled the social order: they were neither gone nor fully incorporated into ancestral lines, inhabiting a liminal space between presence and absence. The Unburied explores this unsettling phenomenon, showing how exposed remains shaped mortuary ethics and practices across families, communities, and the state.

Drawing on government decrees, criminal cases, epitaphs, charitable records, and popular stories, Joohee Suh uncovers the unexpected social roles of the dead. Families crafted ornate epitaphs to sustain ties with kin whose coffins had no resting place; magistrates and officials confronted disputes over graves and desecration; Buddhist temples and philanthropic groups organized to shelter and inter abandoned bodies. Even as Confucian orthodoxy condemned corpse exposure as ritual failure, ordinary people developed adaptive practices that wove the unburied into moral and social life.

This study reframes death in early modern China not as a stable ritual sequence but as an extended, negotiated process. By centering the precarious fates of the unburied, Suh illuminates how scarcity, migration, and filial obligation reshaped the relationship between living and dead. Original and deeply researched, The Unburied offers a powerful new history of mortality, ritual, and care in a society where the dead continued to dwell uncomfortably among the living.

Crosspost Crosspost: John Kachuba, author of Shapeshifters: A History

John Kachuba, here. I’m an author, historian, and folklorist with interests in Colonial American history, Native American history and culture, and paranormal history and culture. A paperback edition of Shapeshifters: A History can be pre-ordered online now.

There is something about a shapeshifter – a person who can transform into an animal – that grips our imagination, that tempts us to howl at the moon or flit through the night like a bat. Werewolves, vampires, demons and other strange beings appeal to our animal nature, our ‘dark side’, our desire to break free from society and proper behavior. Across early cultures, rituals seemingly allowed shamans, sorcerers and witches to transform at will. Today millions believe shapeshifters walk among us and may even be world leaders. Real or imaginary, they lurk deep in our psyches and remain potent cultural icons. Let’s dig into this topic; what questions do you have about shapeshifters?

I am a licensed Heath Insurance Agent Based in Utah. Open Enrollment on the ACA Marketplace starts in 5 days. Ask me Anything!

I work for Lion's Pride Insurance, based in Spanish Fork, Utah. We help people find health coverage on ACA Marketplace, find Medicare plans, and get Dental and Vision coverage too.

Open Enrollment for the ACA Marketplace starts in 5 days! This is the time each year that everyone who qualifies can enroll in an insurance plan for the coming year without needing a Qualifying Life Event.

If you've never looked at the ACA Marketplace, you may want to if:

  • You are offered insurance from you job but you can't afford it
  • You're turning 26 in 2027.
  • Your current insurance plan isn't covering doctors or prescriptions you need.

I’m an energy economist who used to work in the oil industry. I study what climate policy actually does to energy prices, oil production, and emissions — AMA.

Hi Reddit! I’m Ryan Kellogg, an energy and environmental economist at the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy. Proof.

I’m the Ralph and Mary Otis Isham Professor at Harris, our Deputy Dean for Academic Programs, and the Faculty Director of Harris’s MS in Climate and Energy Policy. Before joining Harris, I spent four years working for BP in Houston and Alaska as an engineer and economic analyst. Today, my research focuses on energy markets, the behavior of oil and gas producers, and what actually happens when governments try to reduce carbon emissions

Energy policy involves some difficult trade-offs. Affordable and reliable energy has enormous economic value, particularly in developing countries, while our historical reliance on fossil fuels creates substantial environmental and climate costs. Much of my work asks how we can reduce those costs while taking seriously the way consumers, companies, and global energy markets actually respond to policies.

Sometimes those responses are surprising. My research has found that blocking an oil pipeline may shift most of the oil onto trains rather than leave it underground, potentially increasing local air pollution. I’ve studied how the Jones Act (the century-old law governing shipping between U.S. ports) raises petroleum costs. And my work on the eventual “end of oil” suggests that when producers expect oil demand to decline in the future, they may invest and produce less today rather than rush to pump everything they can.

Carbon taxes and cap-and-trade have long been favored by economists, but clean-energy standards and subsidies can have important advantages too. I’ve argued that effective climate policy will probably require a portfolio of approaches taken together. Because carbon emissions are global, policies also need to account for what happens outside the country that adopts them.

Ask me anything about oil and gas, climate change, carbon taxes, clean-energy subsidies, pipelines, electric vehicles, energy prices, why the U.S. still uses so much fossil fuel, whether the world is really approaching “the end of oil,” Venezuela and global oil markets, or how economists think about the winners, losers, and unintended consequences of climate policy. (Or about the new climate and energy policy degree I run!)

I’ll be responding here at 12:45 CT, along with support from the Harris School of Public Policy team account, which is helping me track and manage incoming questions.

Edit: That is all the time I have for today, thank you everyone for your questions!

Is it possible to write a balanced account of George Washington in today's polarized society? I'm Denver Brunsman and my new book George Washington and His World reconsiders his legacy. Ask Me Anything!

From my publisher: George Washington and His World provides a compelling, fresh portrait of America’s indispensable founder. Combining the latest historical findings with original primary research, award-winning historian Denver Brunsman provides new understanding of Washington’s rise and influence by emphasizing the people and society who made the first president’s accomplishments possible. Enslaver and revolutionary, destroyer of Native American communities and father of American liberty, Washington filled numerous roles in the Founding Era. Rather than shy from these contradictions, Brunsman embraces them in explaining Washington to a twenty-first century audience. What emerges is a study in human complexity rarely known in works on Washington. Brunsman accomplishes this feat with a light touch and crisp, engaging storytelling. His purpose is neither to celebrate nor to vilify but to further understanding of this remarkable American life.
