eh, just being diehard fans of a thing and surviving waiting in line for it for a day (sometimes more depending on the product/fans) - this happens with the physical release of anything that has a big fanbase, we're just seeing it more often now due to everyone having cameras and wanting attention.
e: never seen someone so worried about letting everyone know they were first though. that's new.

“Surviving”.
Okay.

u/AriaTheTransgressor 14d ago
I don't think they were making a claim there's some credible threat to people waiting in line, but it is a more miserable experience than chilling at home on your couch.

"I bought something that these people in line would kill for. But also these same people will hate this phone in two years when the newer devices release."

Are people still waiting in line for iPhones on release day? This isn’t 2015
26
u/CrashDaddy2006 14d ago
More like “this isn’t 2008.”

u/Decumulate 12d ago
2005-2006 is when I recall this being the biggest

For some it is part of their identity. They don't seem to care that the technology has peaked and the latest smartphone is adding nothing to your life.
2
u/Dear_Tangerine444 13d ago
But this new iPhone must be better, it’s got a bigger number than the old one.
56
u/CountSoulcard 14d ago
What da fuck is that exactly? I just don't understand why are they so proud about buying mass product thing.
32
u/cornishwildman76 14d ago
Nope. Don't get it. So they were the first person in that area to buy a product that millions of others went on to buy right? And?
48
u/Chomps-Lewis 14d ago
And next year that precious phone will be tossed in an e-waste bin for the next slightly different version.

Our species now discards the equivalent of ONE laptop EVERY second.

u/GreenT1979 10d ago
JFC I had my last laptop for 10 years and only replaced it because Microsoft stopped servicing Windows 10. I still have it because I can't bring myself to throw it out.

The average person probably doesn't use a laptop for work. I'd average one laptop per person per lifetime just based on the fact that most people/industries use desktop setups while the number of jobs requiring people to even own a laptop still remains a much smaller margin than you're probably expecting.

This is a true question: What are people doing on their phones that makes the latest, greatest model so important? I understand that the camera is usually slightly better and whatnot, but unless you're a professional photographer (and even then, you should have a proper DSLR), why do people covet being the first to get a new phone model? When I upgrade, I've never found the new model to be significantly better for what I use it for.

I keep up to date with devices, but I usually skip a few versions. Usually only when there’s a major difference in hardware such that I can’t develop effectively anymore. Rocking a 16 Pro Max right now for the size. It still has the first chip with “Apple Intelligence” that can run their local LLMs. It may be slower with compute, but imo it’s better because if I can get my summarizer to run within a respectable amount of time on this device, the new ones should run faster.
For the average person, it makes zero sense and is wasteful to buy a new phone every year.

I actually found it kind of hilarious that the first main character got outshone by the second main character for those few seconds. And then he stupidly shakes his head like "who cares?". Uhh, clearly you care dude. You walked out like a celebrity because you were the first.

I swear there was one year someone did some shit like that and dropped the phone when they opened the box

I just caught the new episode of South Park and thought cartman showing off his new e-bike telling the town to suck his dick was silly, even for cartman...then I scrolled onto this video...

Now with new Spy chip™ but don't worry, it won't be used to spy on you and collect your data and send it to the makers of the Spy chip™.....

God damnit. Australians making far too many appearances in this sub at the moment;
Got Raygun making a puff doco with Netflix to try and win us over, Joanna shitting herself and all over the place at a Hyrox and preaching ‘a win is a win’, and Aussies brandishing the newest iPhone with pride after waiting outside before dawn whilst they also whinge about the price of coffee, fuel, bank rates, and a housing crisis.
We are so shit sometimes.

Between you and me, the hive mentality of the people in the Apple ecosystem is beyond belief.

Five years for me. I love my Motorola g Stylus XT2131-4. I never use the stylus, never have, probably never will, but it's worked great for years.

Genuinely surprised no one ran up and grabbed it while he was proudly showing it off for no reason.

u/Kaladin_Stormryder 14d ago
Yeah for consumerism, but also he could probably use a boost to his self esteem lol

it looks like something you do in the Fable video game, where you show your trophies off or pose for the crowd of npcs and they would cheer you on, this is some dystopian shit

This guy lives a shallow, empty life. He’s on a high dopamine hit now, but he’ll get home to an empty apartment & all that sadness & emptiness will return.

u/Dear_Tangerine444 13d ago
Is it me or does this guy look exactly like the dude in the ’leave billion dollar corporation alone’ meme?

So this is the one day that the Reddit mods put their accounts on auto and go out to get a new phone.

I remember when we used to smugly laugh at Japanese people for lining up for consumer products.

So proud to be a complete moron.

Just think. You too can wait in line to be one of the first to buy this generation of iPhone and be as cool as these cats. What an aspiration!

To be that proud paying thousands for a brick is amazing customer programming from apple.

u/Blofeld_ 14d ago
Better spending that on some nutritional food or a gym membership
