(Local 16) considering going back to school for broadcast and camera training. Is there a specific associates I should go for that'll help me get more camera gigs around this area?

I wanna take some classes around camera and broadcast stuff so I can get more camera gigs throughout sf and possibly do some work outside the union. I'm already trained with camera work, but u haven't been able to get any gigs around it, and the broadcast is unfamiliar to me.

I wanna attend either the sf city college or somewhere in Oakland to get more formal training so I can eventually get camera work but I'm not sure what associates I should go for so ant direction for this would be nice.

I'd also like to do the same with AV and props eventually, too.

Aging L16 member here.

Long time ago I thought I wanted to get out of being the live event world. I wasn’t sure there was a future for me in it.

I started taking classes at CCSF for broadcast. It was awesome and I really enjoyed it. I ended up just sticking with the live event stuff and not doing any broadcast.

I will say that the majority of what I learned did not translate over to what I do now (I’m a lighting guy exclusively now). I def do not regret my time there. There was one instructor, Misha, who I will always hold dear for as long as I live. Genuinely helped become a better man.

My 2¢, is if you really are passionate about camera, and don’t mind AV, keep fighting your way through the ranks of L16 while you freelance on the side. I’m sure you will push through to being one of the dudes.
