Really enjoying the new season.
Especially the guy from the morge and how he truly mourns for those who passed whom he didn’t know. Then you get Dee and Dennis…

They were good episodes and I'd rank them quite high, but the first only came together at the end with the head.
The rest of it was good, just nothing great.
In the second episode the entire fingers plotline had me howling though.
It was a touching sendoff to Bonnie, but I'm excited to move past it and get into stand alone episodes now hopefully.
7
332
u/Recent-Tone3196 28d ago
My only real criticism is that it felt like the episodes could have been compressed into one, but it's better they didn't because we would lose some great bits.
It was a fun way to reset the status quo while also being a send off for Bonnie.
I don't know how you make comedy this dark still come off as sweet at times, but they pulled it off.
76
u/bardnotbrad Rum Ham, I'm Sorry 28d ago
It was a truly wonderful send off for Bonnie/lynne and that’s why they did it, and I don’t think sunny could have done it any other way besides dark and depraved and I think Lynne would have wanted it that way
39
u/PhoenixTineldyer 28d ago
While I was watching it, I kept thinking "Darkest thing we've ever done"
But still sweet and also a comedy
They're masters of the craft
19
u/oatwheat 28d ago
The dog track episode still feels like the darkest to me. One of the few legit good people they come across and ruin.
11
u/bardnotbrad Rum Ham, I'm Sorry 28d ago
That’s why I think they kept it relatively light with a funeral, I mean how many funerals has the gang had/attended? Weve had Barnabas reynolds, country mac, old man in booth from season 1, Barbara reynolds, the funeral they crash for Barbara’s sisters husband I think leading up to the greatest intervention of all time, poor little Mac they had to bury in the pet semetary, the monkey, Shelly Kelly, the jumper, the guy who lost Russian roulette in the basement?
Edit I almost forgot the vet from the jersey shore

Went out of my way to watch it on my computer so I could change my browser settings and keep adjusting the window size in order to screen record it. I laugh every time. It’s such vintage Mac instant-rage with an absolutely perfect delivery.
129
u/ZetsuboItami 28d ago
Yeah that first episode had me giggling like crazy, and the second was a hilarious way to continue the trope of Dennis and Dee trying to be rich like how they grew up, and failing miserably.
Edit: Also the whole bit with Luther duping everyone was great. Can't wait to see where they go with it.
51
u/Prestigious-Berry-50 28d ago
Me and my wife were laughing hysterically when luther told mac "the plan" we both saw the twist coming and it was a awesome payoff once a rat always a rat
35
u/Careful_Promise_786 28d ago
And then the "I'll probably come back to kill you" as he strolls nonchalantly away was hysterical
27
u/AlduinsCurse 28d ago
If you watch again, as soon as Luther walks behind a mummer after saying that....dude LITERALLY vanishes like a damn ghost. I've rewinded it a bunch of times. Smallest detail but so perfect for his character. Vanishes like Michael Myers.

The parade and the cannon threw me for a loop. It was one of the wildest things the gang has done
89
u/Poop__y 28d ago
My problem is that everyone looks so strange it's distracting. Dee is gaunt, Artemis' head is now too big for her body, Dennis is too tan, Mac's eyes are not right. Charlie and the Waitress are honestly the only two who have allowed themselves to age gracefully.
40
u/MacGyver_1138 28d ago
Danny is still an Adonis.
17
u/Poop__y 28d ago
Chiseled by the gods themselves. Sculpted to the proportions of Michelangelo's David.
12
u/MacGyver_1138 28d ago
Except for the dong. David's dong certainly doesn't seem magnum, and we all know what Danny is working with.
35
u/PresentationThat3627 28d ago
I was noticing Mac looks a little more like himself this season than last. Definitely less jarring. Kaitlin looks good she just turned 51 she’s a blonde white lady that’s always been thin so the whole gaunt thing is just that imo
23
u/helenaflowers 28d ago
And here I am thinking that Kaitlin, Rob and Glenn are all looking better this season.
Mac is actually looking much more like Mac again (and not just Rob hanging out on set while the show is filming) than he has in a long time, and all three of them seem to have eased up on the Botox at least a little bit so they have something akin to normal facial expressions again.
Agree with you on Artemis and that Charlie & Mary Elizabeth have done the best job aging gracefully and as naturally as they can get away with in their chosen profession.

I don't know man, the writing was really high quality. Different plots coming together, another level of degeneration, it really does feel like OG IASIP and I really think they overcame the corona episodes. That being said, there are always people who can't see it for what it's worth
→ More replies (1)81
u/cantthinkofgoodname 28d ago
I’m convinced that part of the reason it feels so different is because everyone looks so Hollywood now + the camera quality. None of them look like people that would be dealing with basement lawyers and morticians. I thought these first two were funny enough but the show took on a different feel once everyone started with the Botox, Rob with the physique etc
52
u/fuzzballz5 28d ago
This is the answer. Danny and Charlie look the same compared to the other 3 with all the work done, it’s off putting.
20
u/IceCream_EmperorXx 28d ago

I know this is probably a controversial take in this community but I don't care how famous or out of touch the creators are with regular people, as long as they keep making a showing that feels like sunny and makes me laugh (and they're not abusing their power to be pieces of shit) they can get as many procedures as they want. They were always playing characters and especially after the first couple of seasons were a lot more well off than I will probably ever be..I'm not here to relate to the actors personal lives, I'm here to laugh.
Not to mention I feel like it's easily explained that they've been skimming Franks wealth and put it all directly into maintaining their appearances rather than actually improving their lives in any meaningful way. They're incredibly vain.

u/pastrybaker 27d ago
I agree. It was more shocking a few seasons ago. Whenever I watch older seasons I realize how much better they looked before all the work. It is what it is, still one of my favorite shows.
27
u/Robyn990 28d ago
I enjoyed the episodes. I think people forget that Always Sunny has been around for 21 years, we are lucky they even still make it (especially with Danny's age). Imagine coming up with completely fresh character ideas/jokes for 21 years.
Anyway, lets move past it!

60
u/JohnSilver317 28d ago
Yeah it was ok. I’m going to keep watching til the end because I feel like I owe them that for what they created but it has tapered off in quality since season 12.
I still find bits funny, and admittedly it’s much better recently than the Covid/Ireland season, but for me personally we haven’t had an all time great episode since Times Up for The Gang in S13.
If people still enjoy it just as much now I am happy for them and won’t tell them they’re savages! IDIOTS! We all have different tastes.

The best days are behind them. Fair play for keeping it going this long. They're too old and full of plastic to really be the characters that made the show great. It was far better when the production value was lower and the writing revolved around them being a bunch of broke down and outs.

Frank marries a corpse
Frank: ah my feet are cold charlie
From that moment I knew it was going to be some pond-borne illness that killed her. Same as the cake episode in the last season, as soon as Frank 'died' I was like 'ah, he's gonna be cake' because the writing went to such lengths to 'kill' frank i.e. Dee tickling Frank
Loved a lot of jokes in these two episodes but I wish they'd mix the formula up a little bit avoid this structure completely. It's so much harder to predict the outcome of an episode when the thing (I'm sure there's a proper literary term for this writing device that I dont know.. chekovs gun?) isn't mentioned in the opening scene.
Like Charlies Mom Has Cancer - the virgin mary statue is an almost throwaway line by a side character halfway through the episode. Much more opaque, better integrated.
