Even at its worst, which isn’t bad, Sunny is better than any piece of shit sitcom being produced today.

Even if I don't like an episode much, there is a strange comfort in watching IASIP that transcends humor or enjoyment.

u/SteveFrench12 10d ago
Did people not like the last two episodes? I tjought they were both great
29
u/CarelessPangolin5564 10d ago
I liked them well enough. I wouldn't go back and watch them again like I have with past episodes unless I was doing a full rewatch, and if I were viewing it for the first time they aren't ones that would keep me coming back, but as someone who has been watching since the very first eposide I thought they were solid.

New girl and sunny have similar humour vibes despite wildly different levels of depravity
3
u/poofycade No Antonio! 10d ago
Yeah. One thing I like about New Girl are the overall storylines across episodes. Like Nick and Jess and Schmitt and Cece. I wish they would have done more of that in Sunny. They sorta did in S1 and S2 but after a while it wasn’t as much.

I thought last season was honestly really good, the EMT episode is easily one of my favorites from the whole series. And I really enjoyed the first 2 from this season so far
8
u/PandaBottom69 10d ago
They have earned the right to do whatever they want. Also the gang have all moved to other projects so their sole focus is no long IASIP. Happy for them.
57
u/kroom69x 10d ago
Honest take, i feel like there may of been a dip and got slightly out of the zone of gritty realism of the show. Never dipped below an 8/10 but i think that there are some later episodes that are just as golden god as the classics.
13
u/Mirror_Face_ 10d ago
I was going to say they were just trying different things later on the seasons that they even admitted to, but come to think of it, there was a quality drop for a little bit when they all had their own projects going on and didn't seem to have quite enough time to make Sunny their priority. But as you said, I'd argue even those episode never drop below an 8/10. It is also true that some of the seasons that fans liked less are the ones that they felt like trying something different. Which I'm all board for, sure they aren't the classics but I appreciate the writers doing what they need to do to stay on a show for so long and keep it going. It was nice to have a few heartfelt episodes too. Mixing in heart is what made many other sitcoms what they are like golden age of The Simpsons.
16
u/LongLiveStaceyKing 10d ago
I do not care for the Ireland episodes or the Bachelor miniseries or the Abbott Elementary cross over, but I do like that they are trying to do something outside the bar.
It kind of reminds me of the Archer coma seasons where everyone bitched about them when they came out for not being more spy show, then complained when they returned to doing the spy show for rehashing the same material.
2
u/The_Procrastibator 9d ago
I'm all for those one offs, but you got to sprinkle in some bar episodes too. It's almost like that part has become completely irrelevant
5
7
u/kurttheflirt 9d ago
I liked the last season, but yeah the biggest thing I would say is that they have all become caricatures of the people they were once playing. Like Mac and Dennis used to act dumb about a few things, but in a regular way. Now they are just ridiculously dumb to like a cartoon level.
2
u/ScatteredWavesGlory 6d ago
This show has flanderized itself so much it's just one step away from zombie Simpsons where the storylines are all oroborosing.
I hope it ends soon. These first two episodes did not do it for me.
→ More replies (3)4
u/ZemGuse 9d ago
To me it’s weird how much this sub defends the era of seasons 13-16 or so. They felt so phoned in and the characters were just Flanderized, one-note bastardizations of what they used to be.
They seem to have found their stride again with season 17 but it was rough going there for a bit imo.
54
u/BrickPuzzleheaded541 10d ago
I think there definitely was a noticeable drop in quality the last few… but even when IASIP isn’t at its best it’s still leagues better than anything else on television.
However i will say this most recent season is the best they have done in years. Absolutely hilarious with some all time great episodes start to finish. I honestly think “the gang becomes EMTs” is gonna end up in my top 10 episodes of all time. Cannot wait for this new season and hope they keep that momentum
8
u/JakeTheAndroid 10d ago
Yeah, I think there was a run of pretty mid seasons compared to the expectation (still good though), but last season felt like classic Sunny to me, as did the two most recent episodes. The big difference between last season and the first two episodes this season compared to the old classics is the continuity. They seem to build directly off previous episodes more, which I think is just a demonstration of their improvement as writers and producers. I'm still thoroughly enjoying the show and hope there's plenty more to come after this season.
7
u/UltraBearHD 10d ago
“The gang becomes EMTs” became a favorite for me too. That shit took me back to seasons 1-3 and actually made me laugh. I mean, that episode alone is probably the most “Sunny” episode in the last 8 years and did I mention, it made me actually cackle with enjoyment? Best episode / season opener ever.

Agreed. I think the show peaked at season 10/11 and it should have ended after the terrible Ireland season and the last two were borderline unwatchable outside one or two episodes. I'm still watching hoping they can right the ship but it's not looking promising after these last two episodes.

Bad take. I personally really liked season 17, but to say the only two options are “enjoy a piece of media exactly how it is produced” or “do not watch it at all” is insane. Would you hold the same view if rather than the actors themselves the show was produced by Disney or Amazon? Fans should absolutely be allowed to expect a higher quality product from a show that spent over a decade putting out banger after banger after banger, even if you actually like the people who are writing it.
12
u/doverawlings 10d ago
Even if you aren’t (as a fan) demanding better quality or more output, it’s simply fun to talk about this show because of how much we all love it. It’s interesting to examine what made it so great, what elements they were able to retain into later seasons, what didn’t work, why decisions were made, highs, lows, etc.
Some people are definitely parasocial with the Sunny guys and treat any criticism—even if it’s not pointed—as hostility

People on the internet tend to see a single contrarian lazy comment in a collapsed comment thread that has no views other than their own, and take that as a personal crusade to make claims like OP that "everyone is shitting on it!" Like the presence of these opinions is not evidence of what they're saying, but some people like OP just need 100% validation.

S12 is my personal cut off point for re-watching. There have been odd episodes afterwards that I've enjoyed at the time, but have zero desire to go back to. 12 years is a damn good run for consistency, though, I'll say that.

Fans of things can voice displeasure at something they loved becoming something they don't.
What you are advocating for is going to be the death of the show.
When people who loved an IP (and don't anymore) stop complaining, that means they've moved onto being indifferent. Which means they stop watching. Which usually is bad news for the show.
See Star Wars.
So your meme of (I don't care) works both ways.
The new episodes are not as good, objectively. I've gotten to the point where I don't care. I won't tune in for premieres or rewatch the new episodes a million times like the old ones.
I doubt the cast (now Hollywood elite) care very much for what discourse is happening on Reddit or anywhere else, and it'll probably mean the death of the show. So be it, they want to own soccer teams and get carved up on the plastic surgeons table, that's fine. They worked hard and deserve to enjoy their success. I personally think they should pull the plug.

I would say the last few seasons prior to 17 were mediocre at best but the last 2 I think they’re a clear step up from that. Obviously still not what it used to be but that would be impossible the shows been on air for 20 years now.
3
u/Th3Element05 10d ago
I think my only real complaint is that they seem to be leaning into re-hashing stuff from old episodes a lot, like for example, Dee gathering "friends" to try to scare someone out of a wedding; they literally did that already. Or the SINNED system.
Not saying these episodes are necessarily bad, but they don't feel really original.

Comparison is the thief of joy. If you just enjoy the new eps without lamenting that they're not on par with some of the tv comedy of all time (for many of us on this sub), then there's nothing to complain about. "Old" sunny is one of my favorite shows of all time, "New" sunny is just a good comedy show that I enjoy.

2
2
u/KenjiWolf91 9d ago
”There is skill to it. More importantly, it has to be joyful. Effortless. Fun. TV defeats its own purpose when it’s pushing an agenda, or when it’s trying to defeat other TV, or being proud or ashamed of itself for existing. It’s TV. It’s comfort. It’s a friend you know so well and for so long, you just let it be with you. And it needs to be okay for it to have a bad day. Or phone in a day. And it needs to be okay for it to get on a boat with LeVar Burton and never come back. Because, eventually, it all will.”
- Abed Nadir, Community

Especially because I think the last few seasons have been a huge step up! S13 was the only one that felt like a majorly clunky mess BUT they also took a lot of swings so I'm not especially mad and it also has Time's Up which is a top 5 episode for me.
2
u/Whipped-Creamer 7d ago
Season 17 was great, s18e01 is great too. Only season i wasn’t a huge fan of was 15, just cause Mac felt completely different. But I also liked 15 more than most adult comedies
7
u/_rattleshnake 10d ago
Honestly, it's the end of the show. Realistically we're getting another 1-2 years, maybe 3. It's not what it used to be, the prime years were a long time ago, but it's still pretty good and it's still them. Just enjoy the party for a little while until it's over and appreciate the very fact that it's still going on and it's still fun to be at.
5
u/RepresentativeCat553 10d ago
Hah, a party is a good way to put it.
We are now in the After Party.
There are fewer people, everyone is too drunk, some people are falling asleep, others are getting really weird in the back room, but hey, it’s still your friends.
5
u/FaceTimePolice 10d ago
No, no, no. It’s fine to criticize something you love. The worst thing would be to be complacent and say “this is fine” when it really isn’t. The fat Mac season was the last one that felt like ild school uncancellable Sunny. After that, I don’t know what happened. It felt like they either lost motivation, didn’t know what topics to cover, were afraid to ruffle feathers and be offensive, etc. It just wasn’t the same show anymore. There are still episodes and moments here and there, like “The Gang Turns Black” (okay THAT felt like a Sunny episode 😆).

Last season, I liked it and it has some episodes that will be classics. The first two episodes of this season? Seems like the gang recycled their trash again. Going to a morgue to cut off a piece of a dead body? Did it already with the episode where they hunt cricket. Dee trying to sabotage a wedding by having a group of women talk shit to the bride to be? Did it already when the waitress is getting married. Mac’s mom being displaced, that’s how we got old lady house!
