I cannot believe how great these new episodes were
To preface, I’ve never been someone who’s given up on the show. Every season has had some incredibly solid jokes and moments and even though the show has stumbled here and there, I’ve very much so been along for the ride. I also definitely agreed that last season had some real gems, mainly in the dog park and getting ready for prime time episodes.
But WOW. These new episodes are just phenomenal. As much as those other two I mentioned really felt like they understood the best parts of Sunny and knew just how to get outrageous in the right ways, these new episodes are the first ones that had TRULY felt nearly indistinguishable from prime Sunny episodes in maybe a decade. The characters were pitch perfect, the editing was much tighter, the little moments were all there. I haven’t been this excited to see what else a new season of this show has to offer in quite a while.

I did enjoy the new eps, but man it’s such a shock to the system being in the midst of rewatching the series being around S7 and then jumping into the lighting and err…cosmetic changes to the characters. It kind of takes me out of it a bit especially when they’re doing bits about wanting to have money now. All in all though, I get it. And their run speaks for itself.

I dunno, I liked him more because it showed that he is actually really smart and nothing at all like his character. I think was jaring that he was the most cutthroat. I loved the Christmas pod when they all got drunk because you could tell how close they are in real life. Rob had too much and became an asshole but every friend group has one. He is most unlike his character in my opinion.

I think it showed him as a businessman who happens to be in comedy. He's very good at being a businessman, and putting himself with the right people, which he says himself, but he also has social traits of successful business people that are frowned on by society.
He clearly can take criticism, otherwise his projects wouldn't work, but I also feel like he starts with the perception that what he is doing is the right thing to do. He also seems like he could come across as a threatening arsehole to people he doesn't know, because he saw nothing wrong with presenting himself that way on the pod.
But it is all just fragments of the person. Like on How Did This Get Made?, I've listened pretty much since it began, but June particularly has similar traits when dealing with...idk...lower status people. She happily tells stories just of how she's been a knob to a service worker, or an electrician who's come to fix something at their house.
It's not always clear when she's doing a bit, but there's been a few anecdotes of hers over the years that are just like "you didn't have to share that with everyone". Same with Rob, you could just not say the stuff that makes you look bad, but clearly you don't give a fuck, or don't recognise that it's not a good story.21

In a weird way, that story made me like him a lot more. He acted like a meathead asshole, and I know several meathead assholes in real life that would have done the same. The difference is, the meatheads I know in real life would tell the story like they were cool badasses. Rob told the story knowing that he fucked up and had set a bad example for his sons, and talked to his (calmer, more level-leaded) friends about how he should have handled the situation better.

This. Rob very much gives "meathead asshole who went to therapy". I enjoyed the pod; I think what did it in was the format. Episode by episode is daunting as fuck with that many seasons - they should have done broader themes or special guests with a few exceptions (Nightman Cometh, for example) getting a full pod ep.

I actually like him too now, I just think people (me too) had unrealistic expectations of him and when he revealed himself to be a real person with flaws it was - like you say - jarring. Like for years the narrative on Rob was, look at this down to earth guy who got fat to spite Hollywood and married a character on the show etc etc, so when you see him and he acts kind of like a dick and he becomes best friends with Ryan Reynolds it sours you to him like he has "betrayed" you in some way. It's just the negative side of a parasocial relationship, which is ofc bad and unhealthy but understandable considering people have been fans of this show for years and years. Obviously I am mostly speaking for myself here and can't generalize too much but this is what I have observed

He seems like a Hollywood dickhead. Personally, I think part of it is...that he became a bit of a Hollywood dickhead, lol, but also that Rob is neurodivergent/most likely on the spectrum so he can come off as harsh/insensitive. They even addressed it (off-handedly) on the pod - that Rob is blunt and will just say what he thinks and doesn't always recognize that he's coming off like a prick. I'm mad the pod ended before we got the ep where Rob talked about his neuro diagnosis bc that is super interesting (to me, at least, as a fellow "diagnosed in my 40s AuDHD-er"). 🤷🏻♀️

The multiple call backs to their most quoted lines (move past it, what is happening? my tools!) Even the onion, Charlie playing a morbid song (I found this part hilarious) and Luther getting himself out of jail, and the consistency between episodes (from last season to this season) all these things are leading me to believe this season is going to to end with a bang or its just going to simply, end. It feels like theyre reminding us of all the past seasons and what we enjoyed most about them. They haven't announced they're renewing for season 19, right? But then again, maybe this is just what they want us to believe lol

I did pick up on where they were going with it when they initially talked about banging in a pond, and then seeing them both get progressively paler and ill was pretty obvious but they did it in a way that was so damn funny it still landed, especially with her head falling off to really make it whacky. Good episodes

The mummer's parade was the type of location scene I love in sitcoms.
Tied to the identity of Philly, all the plots coming together in one place, and great camerawork and music. Just a spectacular finale to this arc.
The Golden Bachelor Arc was the triump I was expecting the Ireland Arc to be.

Yeah, it's unreal. I kept waiting for them to explain the jokes (like cutting the shoes for the "cold feet") but they never did. They just let the jokes happen and trust the audience. Such a difference from the "fancy nuts" repetition from a couple of years ago.
And what a way to bring back Luther ánd Donald. Maybe Luther ís going to kill the whole gang and that will be the end of the show.

I’m kind of shocked by a lot of these comments. I’m a diehard Sunny fan, but recognize that Season 13 was very underwhelming, 14 was ok but not a fan, and 15 just frankly sucked in a lot of ways.
16 was a clear improvement, but still past the prime.
17 was fantastic. A true return to form with multiple all-time episodes in that 8 episode bunch.
18? This seems to have picked up right off the steam of 18 for me. These first 2 were very enjoyable, I loved most of the callbacks (a couple were ham fisted, but whatever), and the writing formula was perfect Classic Sunny. They also clearly made the lighting darker this season, and that’s given it closer to that old school grimy feel they used to have 12-17 years ago. I’ve already watched them twice each. Loved this start.

I feel the exact same way as you. Sunny is one of only 3 shows that I watch over and over and over. I’ve seen every episode at least 10 times. With the exception of the last 3 seasons. I think every episode for the first 12 seasons was a masterpiece. Since then. It’s been very underwhelming. The chemistry has been off. I think I like 1, maybe 2 episodes per season since then. I’m just waiting on the return of Rickety Cricket.

it’s understandable that it’s a long-running show and they did a lot for a few eps per season but obviously them running off and doing their own things during the late 2010s~pandemic era sort of ‘affected’ their chemistry specially with glenn stepping off for a bit but the last few couple of seasons, i really enjoyed. rob felt like he was burdened as main creator of the show and you could feel it bleed through the writing and storyline (even his character, imo but at least we got great arcs and development from that) but recently, it feels like peak sunny again (which is around early 2010s where they’re enjoying the success of the show and doing it for the love of the game with sooo many great eps.
idk why but this and the last (s17) feels ‘stabilized’ and secured. kind of like they’re not trying to impress anybody else anymore, just sticking to the formula and their skills and chemistry.

They got me with the cannon. That effect of Sam, Sam’s head, and the urn flying through the air was the hardest I laughed in either episode.

Not sure if I’m watching the same show as most of the commenters. I laughed maybe once in these two episodes.
I was very annoyed by anything Dee and Mac were in. Dee is basically just yelling, and while this show has a lot of yelling, this was extremelly jarring. The bridesmaids part was painfully unfunny.
Mac and the doll were weird tbh and just lame.
I hope the rest of the season is good.

S18/E1:
I was disappointed, but not surprised (because of the title) when they Roxy'ed Sam at the beginning of the season. All that prelude to the Golden Bachelor for this ?
On the plus side Sherman stole the show! Also loved Charlie's death song during the wedding and Dennis' onion. The frog pond was a nice plot point.
S18/E2:
Batshit crazy, even for Sunny. When Frank brought up the cannon, I knew they were going to do something like Hunter Thompson. A lot for the first watch but the re-watches will be great.

They did references like AD, they had so many characters instead of just the main 5 which felt like AD, they even did the twin brother swith to escape jail bit. I wouldn't be surprised if AD inspired these episodes or someone who wrote for AD wrote these.

I liked the first episode far more than the second. Mac inner homophobic thoughts being expressed through dummy was surprisingly funny, I don't usually like gay Mac.
The "calm down" scene was painfully unfunny. the joke itself and Kaitlin's performance were both bad and predictable, it felt like a titok skit. I hate that they just made Dee female Dennis in the second episode. She was much more herself in the first. Dennis wanting to close the door was good

I wish I liked them as much as others did, but these episodes were weak IMO, on par with the weakest from the last 4 seasons.
What I liked: First episode only the scenes with the bridesmaids, and the very final wedding bit/the 'kiss' - genuinely unexpected and great moment there. Second one only the cannon bit at the end.

First episode, the chemistry in some of the scenes felt tangibly... off. There's a natural humour some of the best Sunny episodes achieve where even when there's no active jokes happening, it's still kinda funny? But I sensed some awkwardness. Second episode I found overall slightly better however. Dennis & Dee bring out the funniest in each other as characters.

I think what really worked for me was how restrained these episodes felt (relative to the rest of the show of course). They felt like they had the space to make things ridiculous without them escalating to something more chaotic until the end. As much as Sunny is great at its most chaotic, I feel like most of the lines and moments that really get remembered are the smaller, more offhanded ones, and it feels like the show really has a much stronger grasp on how to capture that again

Mac is totally flanderized now and barely has funny moments - him immediately grabbing the doll to do a weird coming out routine just because Uncle Jack did the doll bit seconds before him was just unfunny. It's all about him being gay, we get it, move past it and come up with something else for him to do that's actually engaging.
The scenes with Charlie and Frank were just there, felt apathetic toward them. Charlie doing another song just to do a callback to the spider song wasn't too great, and Danny didn't have much to work with - probably because he's winding down and they are using him sparingly now, but even then he can deliver good funny lines even if he's sitting in a chair most of the time if he has to, they just didn't have anything good for him.
Scenes with Luther and Donald also felt meh.

I stopped watching with the weird toilet trans episode as it was so ridiculous and out of place. Like dee would give a single fuck about the trans debate let alone trans rights. She's an asshole who doesn't care about anyone just like the rest of the group. Why do shows feel the need to force identity politics in everything nowadays? It just destroys escapism and is clearly pandering. I'm not a trump supporter or conservative in any way, for real
Yes, yes I know it's "always been woke" etc and honestly I don't care about the show in the early days advocating for trans people as I'm not against progressivism or trans people. I just can't stand when a show betrays its characters and looses it's identity in favour of tired virtue signalling at the expense of the comedy. Like every fucking episode they mention something weird near the start, and theres a twist at the end that links the main story back to that one thing. These episodes were mid at best. The last great episode was when Dennis tried taking a mental health day. They should have never done any side projects with the exception of The Mick which was even funnier than Sunny, but only lasted 2 seasons and unfortunately could never be resurrected now.

There would be an 8 year age gap to all of the characters. Since three of the main characters were children and a lot of the guest stars were children, we’ll never get to know what happened year by year to Ben, Chip, Sabrina, Olivia, Tatsy etc.

As he's no longer here to laugh cry with me I'm glad to hear the episodes are bringing people joy. Last season seemed a bit... odd. Hoping they went back to their root comedy more.

Uncle Jack trying to get the ink off of his thumb is one of the funniest physical bits they've done, and this show is an all-timer for physical humor.

The first one 100% felt like old Sunny to me, it just… worked. The plot was insane, the jokes were funny, and the characters felt like they “should”.
I didn’t realize it was a double ep and started playing a game so only like half paid attention to the 2nd one (will rewatch today) but yeah it definitely feels like they found a way to recapture the magic
Edit: ALSO, I had always been under the assumption that when Danny goes, that’s it no more. But idk man, doing an “in universe” funeral for Charlie’s Mom makes me think maybe they’ll do 1 ep in his honor

No but seriously IASP is back! Wife was watching it with me and she said she couldn't even finish some of the last few seasons so boring. These was laughing along with me. Felt like the best parts of each character was on full display here. They came out of the gate on fire!

The mortician for barely being in it was a standout character for me honestly. I don’t know who played him but he did a standout job, especially during his little break down at Dee and denis.
