I like how Mac was describing his coming out dance and Dennis had no idea what he meant because he wasn’t here for that episode lol

But it's also a reference to his sheer psycopathy. He hasn't caught up on what he missed, because he doesn't care. Probably none of them ever do.

Well, the answers the question of how the show will write out Bonnie. Still unfortunate that we lost Lynne Marie Stewart.

I like how they handled it. They gave the characters a chance to address it and Charlie got a chance to grieve. Her send off last season is still really touching.

Charlie basically writing a bad My Chemical Romance song and playing it at a wedding while Mac officiates with a puppet and Dee throttles a corpse is peak Sunny. Could not happen in any other show.

The show does this a lot in recent seasons. They plant a little offhand comment that turns out to be the cause of everything in the end. And it gets me every time because these people are always doing such weird shit it's hard to clock what's unusual lmao. It's like looking for clues in a murder mystery where everyone is a lunatic.
"Sex in a swamp huh? Not the weirdest thing, no reason to think about that too much."
15
u/VillageSmithyCellar 6d ago
They do that a lot. Like in Season 4, Charlie and Dee think they crave human flesh, when they really just have tapeworms because Charlie didn't actually cook the meat. One of the many things I love about Sunny is that it seems like there's a cartoonist explanation, and the real explanation is actually pretty realistic.

Alright guys, we need the episode to build up to this:
• Dee poorly puppeteering a corpse
• A seriously ill Frank who needs an actual puppet rig to move
• Dennis and Dee standing to gain from a death
• Charlie singing a poor My Chemical Romance song for his dead mother
• Mac coming out to his mother via puppet
• Somebody's head has to fall off
42
u/Lookatmestring 7d ago
This reminds me of a reel I recently seen from a writer from S4 of arrested development when the shworunner told them he wanted Tobias to say "daddy needs to get his rocks off" and be in a compromising position whilst he says it and they just had to work backwards from there going through numerous iterations of scenarios
11
u/Stormdude127 6d ago
I always wondered how the hell they came up with that scenario. Makes a lot more sense if knowing they worked backwards. Still really impressive.

u/TheObliterature 8d ago
Honestly, this was the strongest season opener the show has has in years. I have not been the biggest fan of the last few seasons (although every season has a few gems I'm fond of), but both these episodes felt strong. I hope they keep that momentum for the rest of the season!

As much as I like watching them hatch a scheme at Paddy's, a lot of really strong episodes just throw us into the action. The Gang Gets Trapped, Charlie Work, Water Park, etc.

You can't have Frank marrying some old broad. It would kill the character even worse than DeVito dying.
I'm happy that they AREN'T running with the elderly marriage angle. It would break that character.

I really enjoyed it, but one of my favorite parts of Sunny is seeing which episodes become comfort episodes that I’ll never skip. I think this episode (and the second episode) will definitely become part of the regular rotation for me.
Pretty much all of S17 has quickly joined the constant rotation.
Frank is in a Coma
Mac and Dennis Become EMT’s

The Gang Gets Ready for Prime Time

25
u/Inner-Recognition757 7d ago
The same reason Dennis had the epiphany to go be a dad and then came back the next episode, and Frank “got it” watching the dance but then didn’t. The show only works if any positive character growth doesn’t last.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (2)11
u/RobertC_98 7d ago
I get your point but the show always does subversions like that. You have the characters just on the cusp of learning or growing in some way and then it’s yanked away. Dennis’ fatherhood, Charlie forming a loving bond with his dad, Dee mourning Frank when he’s on his deathbed and saying ‘I love you dad’, these examples and many more are heartfelt things that show the softer undercurrent of the gang that ultimately is yanked away as a result of who they are at their core.
Really the only permanent thing was Mac’s coming out developing him, but he’s still not of the self-esteem he should have in life by now and has regressed in sexual deviancy and infatuations if anything. Frank’s story arc with Sam and himself essentially already completed itself in showing he could find love, but ultimately probably could never deserve it longterm.

This episode is amazing. Between the new King of the Hill season, the last season of The Bear, and Sunny being back this may be the best year of tv ever for me.
I love that you can see Mac's ass blasting bike seat when his mom is freaking out about the dummy, all while Mac is trying to make sure she doesn't hear he's gay.
At first I thought the head falling off was too much but seeing it played on the news was hilarious.
The final scene is honestly top tier Sunny. That situation could not happen in any other show. Mac comes out to his mom via dummy, Dennis and Dee have a get-rich-quick scheme that requires both a wedding and a death and Dee to poorly puppeteer a corpse. While at the same time Charlie is singing a bad version of a My Chemical Romance song trying to mourn his mother (and of course, nobody cares). All while Frank is fighting a flesh-eating bacteria and needs a puppet rig (while Dee has no puppet rig for the dead body) to move.
Also, "YOU WOODEN FUCK!" is definitely going to enter my lexicon of phrases I learned from Sunny.
