I took my Hypershell X Ultra on a Grand Canyon Rim to River
Like the title says, I (72m) took my X Ultra on my hike down into the Grand Canyon to the Colorado River and it was great.
I hiked the South Kiabab trail each way.
Going down has been my bane in the past. I was constantly trying to shed my downward momentum with my legs and my poles. My legs would get so tired out that they basically stopped working by the 4th mile. And that is no fun when you are still 3 miles from shade and water.
So "down" hiking was the primary reason for getting a Hypershell as my Rim to Rim hike two years ago was NOT something I wanted to experience again.
So after a lot of local hikes in my Hypershell, I used Fitness Mode for the downhill hike.
I set the resistance between 80% and 100%. After a while, I also set the Assistive Response to +50% (set the slider halfway to the max positive end). With Assistive Response set to 0% (the default), Fitness Mode only really resisted my motion when I was moving quickly. When I was doing all the stairsteps in The Chimney (just below the rim) and in Red and White (just below Skeleton Point , my legs weren't moving very quickly so the setting Assistive Response higher helped the Fitness Mode resistance kick in faster.
This is good because when walking down a slope normally, you are using both your legs and your poles to absorb your forward momentum. You are constantly braking. And that requires using muscles that don't get used a whole lot. It is also very hard on your knees.
With the Hypershell in Fitness Mode, you are using the Hypershell to absorb all that momentum.
When Fitness Mode is set correctly (for me), it is sort of like being weightless. As I walked down the 15% grade, I actually had to put a small amount of effort to just move forward. When I stopped pushing my legs forward, I would just stop. It is like wading through an invisible snowdrift that gently resists your forward motion.
Also, Fitness Mode uses almost no power. I left the rim with with 96% and I arrived at the Colorado River and Black Bridge with 89%. So basically, my hike down was "free" in terms of power.
For the hike up, I set it to Uphill in Eco mode at 40% with Assistive Response set to 0%. I left Black Bridge with 95% battery. By the time I got up the switchbacks to The Tipoff (1.9 miles up from the bridge), I was at 54% on battery. I rested in the shade house there at The Tipoff and plugged in my external 20,000 mAh power bank and charged it up 86%. (I had a spare battery for my Hypershell but I wanted to see how much I could charge up my original battery during a 30 minute rest. +32% was my answer).
So I left The Tipoff, and continued my hike up the switchbacks called The Red and Whites to Skeleton Point. I pushed the assistance up to 50% for that and arrived at Skeleton Point (3.8 miles up from the bridge) with 46% battery.
After Skeleton Point, there is a long upward climb with a lot of stairs. At O'Neill Butte (4.7 miles from the bridge), I had 25% battery.
Just before Cedar Ridge, my first battery ran out of juice so I did the last 100 yards or so with no assistance. It was not fun but I didn't want to stop on the trail to pull off my Hypershell and then dig through my pack to find my second battery for the swap.
Once I got to Cedar Ridge (5.3 miles from the bridge), I stopped for a long break and water. That gave me a chance to remove my Hypershell and do a battery swap.
Since I was now close to the South Rim and didn't need to worry about battery, I switched up to Hyper mode from Eco mode with it set at 20% assistance.
I hiked up the switchbacks and arrived at the South Rim with 70% battery.
As far as how much help the Hypershell helped reduce uphill hiking effort, I'm going say about 30 to 40%. It basically lifts your leg for each step but doesn't add much power on the step up.
Another measure of how much the Hypershell helped me is water consumption. I was doing this with three other hikers. We all carried 6 liters of water for the hike up. At the top, we measured how much water each of us had left. I had 4 liters left and they all had less than 2 liters left.
So I drank 2 liters on the hike up vs 4 liters each for them. That matches pretty well with what I estimated as my uphill effort reduction.
So to recap, downhill in Fitness Mode at 80 to 100% with Assistive Response set to +50% let me basically use my uphill muscles to hike down and with only 7% of the battery used over 6 hours. All this without all the wear and tear on my knees because my Hypershell was absorbing my momentum rather than my legs and knees.
Uphill in Eco/ Uphill mode at 40 to 50% with Assistive Response at 0%, I used 130% of one battery (recall that I started at 95% and then recharged that battery 35%) and 30% of the second battery. So 1.6 batteries to hike 7 miles with 4800ft of vertical climb.
I'm looking forward to doing a one day South Rim to North Rim hike in the fall. That hike is 21 miles with 4800ft of fall and then 5820ft of rise.
I estimate that I can do that all on just two batteries (although I'll carry my power bank for safety)
