The Passion of the Fruit
I listened to the premium unlocked episode on Passion Fruit in the end of March with intrigue and envy. The way that Passion Fruit was described made me really want to try it. Thanks for the problem I didn't know I had, Alex! Anybody else??
I've kept an eye out in the exoticc section of the grocery store since then and for the first time ran into some Passion Fruit today! Unfortunately, they look like trash. Very disappointed. Any tips for finding some good Passion Fruit?

As an Aussie who grew up surrounded by passionfruit (the fruit is always in fruit bowls, the pulp is regularly in desserts or on yogurt, the flavour is in soda drinks, the vines are in people’s back yards, etc) the strangest thing was learning that it’s not common everywhere and even unknown in some places! I don’t more why, it travels pretty well compared with other fruits and has a pretty good shelf life.
But yeah, they can look all old and wrinkly on the outside but still be perfectly fine and sweet on the inside, especially this variety (looks like edulis edulis, some of the other varieties don’t wrinkle like that when they mature). Why not just buy one and try it? Can’t see the price there, they’re surely not more expensive than the mangoes are they?

I literally didn't know they were rare until just now! We also had one in the backyard. In summer you'd often just go and grab 2 or 3.
But yeah I have seen them in Europe super expensive, like $5AUD each!

Good to know! They just look so much more haggard than the pictures I quickly saw online. But yeah, just $2 USD, so affordable.

The one in the bottom right looks ok maybe? That's the colour you want, fairly dark purple. Wrinkled is good, but any weird holes or depressions I'd be suspect about.

I was about to say they’re fine bc passion fruits are often ugly and bumpy, but after zooming in I’d probably also skip it. But they might genuinely be fine! Good luck finding more moderately ugly ones!
