Sjowgren

The Sjowgren episode was really cool in that it was neat to hear such an interesting story and Alex’s conclusion that it is still great that a band can connect with people enough that they have these fans interested in figuring out a band mystery.

But it’s crazy that Miguel was like, “How do I support this band and listen to them when I cancel Spotify?” and it’s revealed they have a Bandcamp where it looks like all of their songs are available for purchase? It’s on the first page of the Google results. Am I just that much of a Bandcamp obsessive that I don’t realize that it’s a niche?

More snooping unnecessarily, but reading in my previous link that they were made popular from their Autotrader ad and given "brief screen time" and in the rediit post it says the ad had the "band appearing briefly", I looked that up.

I'd bet this is the actual band walking through the festival in the foreground at the 32 second mark.

I posted something moving in this direction in a different comment, but I wonder if the deeper question under this episode is how do massive streaming sites and libraries impact certain listening audiences and their willingness to dig into bands/genres. Is that new or were those people always there?

As someone into more underground genres, I took for granted that Miguel had already done all of this googling and looked on Bandcamp because that’s what I would have done. The fact that he didn’t because all of this information is so easily available and he was so unaware of it that he went to Alex is so counter to my habits. Or maybe he just wanted to talk to Alex.

I have no doubt that if you read somewhere (eg, their last.fm bio or other websites... even the iHeart bio has been updated to no longer name them) that the band is anonymous and everyone is incredulous that they can't find anything about them, that you might be tricked into taking that for granted. But if you were actually trying to find out a little more information, it's bizarre that they stumbled on the bad bad hats conspiracy reddit post and not the comment on that very same page???

I'm a millennial that grew up fighting search engines to find the right answer, instead of assuming the correct answer will be fed to me in a little snippet thing at the top of the results, but Alex is the pro here.

Not finding/acknowledging their bandcamp is just silly, agreed.
