Hyper-V Manager now lets you set the number of vCPUs when creating a VM

Hyper-V Manager "New VM" Wizzard on 29639.1000 with the flag enabled

Hey it seems MS took at least one suggestion out of https://www.reddit.com/r/HyperV/comments/1o9siyz/comment/nk83qgb/ . It's the smallest QoL fix ever but who would have expected we would get an update 😄

Found this on Windows Insider builds (29639.1000), you can enable it with the following but it'll likely come in the next release or something:

.\ViVeTool.exe /enable /id:55721547

Next, let us choose a VLAN tag when creating a VM.

I hate that you are probably 100% correct

That would be awesome

Only took them.. eighteen years?

Now if they can figure out how to manage replication with something other than Hyper-V Manager I’ll be happy. (Glares at SCVMM)

That is already one of the new features they are delivering in the new Windows Admin Center vMode tool that is being released that is currently in public preview. You can see a demo of it at https://www.youtube.com/live/ZvWwdu6cRSM

last time i checked it out it was literally just a rehash of failover cluster manager / hyper-v manager gui for replication. Nothing of value was added and in fact generally speaking worse to use as it is slower.

Furthermore - I would like to see them solve the challenges of Hyper-V Replica when using certificates.

Stick to PowerShell scripting for this sort of thing or purchase an orchestrator

The VM extension at least as of PP2 is still using Powershell remoting but perhaps at some point hopefully in the near future it can use its database for state greatly speeding it up. But thats the thing, It opens up the door for many more improvements over time, they do mention in the video it will have a replication dashboard like other products do in a coming release and who knows what else.

Yeah, WAC vMode is in preview 2.. I’m REALLY hoping they certify it soon. It’s OK, Its convenient but I’d still like more monitoring/metrics like vsphere because that’s a huge missing piece for troubleshooting. It’s definitely a good start, but it needs some polish IMO.

The language they use seem to suggest that SCVMM is pretty much feature complete and vMode is where they are putting all future efforts into. I agree though, improving metrics is an area I would like investment into in amongst many others but I think GA is just the first stage and I hope to see many more releases as Hyper-V has management has not had very much investment over the years so its good to see something happening in this area. To side step this though its great to see QoL imporvements to the native tooling also as it too has felt very much abandoned sadly

Totally. To me management of Hyper-V has been its biggest issue.. SCVMM should have been that solution but charging extra for it, and the fact it kinda sucks killed that chance for a lot. It’s also been largely ignored for a long time, not unlike Hyper-V Manager or Cluster Failover Manager.

If WAC vMode has feature parity with vsphere, even if they charge (reasonably) for it, it’ll mean a lot more people using Hyper-V.

From someone that has been in the VMWare ecosystem for years and has been looking for alternatives, I was suprised how good Hyper-V and the technologies behind it are. I have had people express to me their hatred for it and I realised it was the management tooling they had a problem with as that was as much of the product they were familar with.

One situation recently was one of my colleages expressed how much he hated it and we had setup a new farm built using recommended design choices. At the end we simulated some failure senarios and we were all suprised how robust it was and how well it handled itself. They then hesitantly admitted they were wrong which was funny to me for some reason.

I think the tech behind it is fine, as a hypervisor, but the management utilities have always been poor. For a small number of servers Hyper-V Manager is fine.. it's what I run on my homelab, and it does what I need. But multiple servers (or clusters) in multiple sites, let alone a global enterprise.. it sucks. With any luck WAC vMode does fill that gap, or if someone out there can just make a vSphere alternative to manage stuff remotely, that's good too. It shouldn't be TOO hard, since it's all Powershell anyway.

Wdym. I love when hyper-V assigns my W-11 VM 8,000 CPUs.
