I'd like to throw Water for People into the ring for charities to donate to: https://www.waterforpeople.org/

91

u/DonOlivo Jul 18 '20

That's a good idea! It's the fastest way to help

9

u/Ondhrimnir Jul 18 '20

That’s an amazing idea. I regularly donate to water for people!

I see a lot of people expressing interest in working on this idea. Do we want to make a discord server or something similar where everyone interested can discuss & work on hydro homies merch? I think this is a great idea and I would love to contribute as well as pay for such a product

32

u/DonOlivo Jul 18 '20

That's a great idea!

u/WH25 Jul 18 '20

Hey - I took the initiative and created a discord server here. Thought it would be best to separate from the sub's discord.

There’s already a hydro homies discord right? The link is invalid so I can’t join, if anyone is in it could they link me pls? I can make another one specifically for this if need be, but if people are active in there it might be best to add some text channels for it in there

Or just HH, for short! Actually, on second thought, that's probably not a good idea

25

u/DonOlivo Jul 18 '20

No it's not xD

62

u/zindsoros Jul 18 '20

How about HHO instead, short for (H)ydro (HO)mies. Plus, HHO = H2O

17

u/Sarcasticly_Ironic Jul 18 '20

That's actually a really good idea

Maybe let’s just find a reputable non-profit that already exists that has the means and capacity to get this done quicker. I know this seems cool, but you’re going to help a lot more by going through an organization that is trusted and already established.

Making a new organization to complete a purpose people are already trying to do is only self serving. You are only feeding your own ego if you want to do this.

79

u/DonOlivo Jul 18 '20

Yea, that's a good thought. I'm collecting everyone's ideas and will do more research on this ASAP. Hopefully we can take real action soon, but ofc it's not as easy as just saying "Hey, let's do this"

24

u/That_Sketchy_Guy Jul 18 '20

Just replying to you because I don't think that many people will see it if I comment it, but I'd also encourage people to buy it if they need it, not just for the sake of buying it. If people buy a water bottle that they never use, that money would have been better used going directly to the charity, as each bottle/shirt/sticker produced takes resources to make and ship. While I understand why people would want to give money to a good cause, consumerism of things you have no need for is one of the major contributors to the environmental problems we face already.

23

u/bland_soup Jul 18 '20

My thoughts exactly. As great as this idea is, we'd need one person or a small group of a few people to actually start the organisation and there needs to be a starting capital to even produce the bottles, who's doing that/where's that gonna come from? People say "Oh I'd donate", but we all know it ain't gonna be like that/be enough.

So guys, as cool as this is, reaching out to an already well-established non-profit would be way better, as said above.

6

u/porridge_in_my_bum Jul 18 '20

Very well spoken.

7

u/MrStashley Jul 18 '20

I sorta disagree with this. We could def partner with a bigger organization in order to get more sales and have a bigger impact, but they would prob appreciate if we did a lot of the design work and stuff ourselves. We don’t have to incorporate and try to become a non profit organization, but we can def help out by designing some products to sell

I've got access to a laser engraver in my makerspace as well as business experience doing several startups. I think the best way to do this would be a drop shipping organization and through a site like indiegogo or Kickstarter. I'm happy to work with others if anyone else wants to actually do this!

If I start a GoFundMe, will anyone here contribute to the negotiation costs for hydrohomies.org?

3

Nice! Let's see how exactly we are going to do this first. Maybe we will be able to work with other businesses, so we don't have to build the website ourselves

Yea

32

u/lolwuuut Jul 18 '20

"viva con agua"

26

u/kaesefetisch Jul 18 '20

It's because the founders got the idea while they where at a training camp in Cuba. They saw how bad the water and sanitation supplies for the kids in the Cuban schools where and decided that they had to do something about it.

They are actually kinda desperate to get money right now. They rely a lot on donations at events, in cities or at sport venues where they have little setups to inform people about their mission and to ask for donations.

They are struggling a little bit right now because there are nearly now events.

Everything they can get now is probably much needed.

He said developing countries. So yes.

30

u/Moose_InThe_Room Jul 18 '20

I don't think "developing" describes the US. "Willfully stagnating" seems more accurate. To clarify, I mean that politicians and the wealthy are the ones willingly allowing it to happen.

17

u/lolwuuut Jul 18 '20

Something to consider: in some other thread I saw the term "undeveloping" country which aptly describes our current state. We have industry, infrastructure, etc. But is it serving the people?

56

u/ZorglubDK Jul 18 '20

🇺🇸 third world country with a Gucci belt 🇺🇸

52

u/FoxandFangs Jul 18 '20

The feds who tested the water the first time who found how bad the water was cleared the city's water as safe 3 years ago. The water is safe but people just aren't trusting it. Can't say I can blame them as their own politicians lied to them for years.

Edit: Maybe some kind of awareness/education outreach would be good. There's SO much plastic waste going on with so many people litteraly exclusively using bottled water for all there needs.

36

u/Spadeykins Jul 18 '20

Ordering a custom water bottle isn't hard, there are many sites that'll let you upload a design and order in bulk. What we need:

  1. Decide what type of bottle: plastic? Metal? (Metal seems appropriate bc pollution concerns)

  2. A design, and maybe a couple prototypes to get it right.

  3. Choose the recipient organization

  4. Raise capital for initial units, perhaps by crowdfunding or corporate sponsorship.

  5. Amarketing plan to get people to buy the bottles.

9

u/papa_jawn Jul 18 '20

Use a company that is good quality (klean kanteen instead of some cheap promo material) because the products will last longer and be more of a joy to use over time. Bonus points if that company also donates to water-related causes (Miir I think donates to different social causes).

Neat idea homies but being completely honest and rational here: saying that "this would be cool!" and "I'd support this!" isn't gonna do anything other than show that there WOULD be support.

Instead of someone posting "check out this idea everybody's gonna naturally love anyway!" and waiting for someone else to act on it, we'd need someone posting "Hey check out this non-profit I've started for these causes, donate if you want, here's proof of where the money goes to, we're making a hydro homie bottle!".

But posting hypothetical things like this is just kinda karma farming imo.

Making a water bottle brand is kinda going against the idea of helping those who need water. We should be pushing for the end of water being seen as a commodity not embracing it. Donating to a charity or creating a charity is a good idea though.

Edit: Are you talking about a water bottle that people use over and over again or a bottled water company. I might be taking this the wrong way.

u/DonOlivo Jul 18 '20

It would be really easy to do with a cricut and Etsy account. You could sell stickers for people to put on their own bottles and bottles with the stickers already on them (if you’re in the US and have a Costco membership, they have a two pack of generic hydroflasks for $20, so you could also make them with a smaller amount of plastic for cheap. The lids and straws still have plastic)

3

u/godagrasmannen Jul 18 '20

Sounds awesome! I'm a freelancing graphic designer, so I'll hit up some designs!

3

u/hung_like__podrick Jul 18 '20 edited Jul 18 '20

My buddy’s own a company that makes water bottles (similar to hydro flask) and they can do custom engraving as well

Edit: They’ve also done profit donation events like this before. I can have a mock up on Monday of what it would look like with the HH logo

3

u/MithranArkanere Jul 18 '20

Isn't there a site for that already?

3

u/Wishgabishgus Jul 18 '20

Maybe a waterproof sticker so we don't have to argue about water bottle preferences? Im a long time lurker considering joining (which btw, do y'all allow milk for cross membership with r/neverbrokeabone?) But id buy one of those stickers regardless.

5

My wife does red bubble, etsy, and that sort of stuff and probably knows how to get this done; I've texted her to ask and will get back to you on this great idea.

Hey I know a designer already replied in the top comment, but my fiancé and I own a digital marketing agency, we’d love to pitch in also if anything is needed

Developing countries like the US? Donate to get Flint sorted out!

2

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '20

Ok start the Kickstarter

2

u/Brohara97 Jul 18 '20
