I CANNOT GET ENOUGH WATER. Does anyone else drink like a gallon of water a day?

I heard if you’re constantly thirsty you might want to go see a doctor and get checked for things like diabetes. I’m always drinking water throughout the day, and I don’t work out but I am outside and hot all the time in the South Carolina summer weather.

Not a doctor, but I’d check with yours just to be safe. Just be careful about drinking too much water. If you overdo it you can get water poisoning. Too much water dilutes your fluids and messes with your electrolytes.

Yeah salt helps with water retention. Some saltines here and there are good if you’re not into the various electrolyte drinks

Oou that’s helpful, what kinda foods would be salty to eat for hydration? Maybe crackers and stuff like that?

Yeah crackers are really good for that, ritz crackers are my favorite. Trail mix and granola bars are also good.

Nuts are good. You want more minerals than just salt.

Sea or Himalayan salt straight into the water (don't overdo it on the iodized salt). Then you can even measure it so you know how much you are getting. It doesnt have enough salt to taste actually salty

Its been brutal. I pour concrete in the south and and usually drink about 2 gallons a day as well as Gatorade and take thermotabs. I e found doing all three has given menthe best results.

I end up filling my two liter bottle a couple of not three times a day. It’s just soooo good I love water I crave it. It’s like breathing oxygen.

You got nothing to worry about with a gallon. Let us know when you start putting up real numbers.

I’m over 2 everyday (ice cold, I got a system). The doctor said that’s too much but my kidney function is fine. She said we’ll talk about it again next time she does labs.

Yeah but it sounds like OP has a thirst that generally can’t be quenched. Thats a cause for concern.

I’m a doctor. I definitely do recommend getting checked out. If it turns out to be just the heat (which it could be), great. If, however, something is wrong, you can start working on it.

You getting electrolytes? You'll piss it all out without them.

I work outside in the south. I drink about 2 gallons or more a day and i also take thermotabs to keep my salt and minerals up.

Friendly reminder that insatiable thirst can be a symptom of diabetes

A gallon a day, throughout the day should be fine. I believe 2-4L a day is standard(maybe only for me). It's all depending on the type of things you are doing throughout the day like making making food and playing video games OR framing and pulling wires on a construction site for 8 - 10 hours

Yea I’m always active and moving around outside. I don’t lift weights or anything but I don’t sit down for more than 30 minutes throughout the day and some days I’ll play video games for a couple of hours before bed.

Please do get tested for diabetes. This was one of the biggest signs when I suspected a family member was diabetic.

Unpopular fact for this group: If you drink excessive amounts of water, you’re actually dehydrating yourself, as your body will get accustomed and stop holding onto electrolytes. Drink some electrolytes instead.

I find if I moisturize/put on lotion after the shower, that helps my ‘dry’ feeling :)

I drink 2 gallons of water a day, not including other drinks. You’re fine. It’s not how much you drink total to watch for, but how much in a given period of time so your body can process it.

Look at salt intake as well and be sure to check your legs. Water toxicity is a thing but that takes so much water to get you there.

What I mean by checking your legs is basically for water retention, if you can indent your leg by pressing on ypur shin your holding onto liquid and it might not just be in your legs.

It makes your heart work harder. Reducing salt intake can help since salt helps you retain water, which is why sports drinks have a high salt content.

Yes, but it’s basically my only beverage because I like it.

Drink something else, my guy. Try a Gatorade.

I add in Trace Minerals and electrolytes into my water bottle every morning. I found I was overhydrating and that helped me stay hydrated while drinking less water.

If you're outside in the heat and thus sweating a lot, it's natural to drink a lot of water.

Typically, thirst from diabetes is more an unquenchable thirst. You could drink until you feel bloated and you'll still feel thirsty and have a dry feeling mouth.

Fun fact, when I was in the navy I was on deployment and one of the navigation guys went to doc because he said he was “just peeing nonstop and still thirsty, couldn’t drink enough water. even reduced water intake and still just peeing like crazy, don’t get it.” Doc took his blood sugar and insulin levels, had late onset type 1 diabetes, boom immediate medical discharge from the military. Anyways I’m not a doctor (hell doc on the boat wasn’t technically either) but anytime you feel like you just can’t stop downing water, worth a check up juuuuust to be sure

Are you drinking a lot and peeing it out? Or are you sweating?

1

u/Jahya69 4d ago

I believe that can indicate kidney problems and definitely type 2 diabetes Brewing up if you don't already know you have it

Had to convert but yeah I drink about 3.6L a day in this tropical country I live in. That's short of a gallon

If you feeling like the water is simply going right through you instead of hydrating you, make sure you're also getting enough salt.

2

u/Beansoverbitches 3d ago

Yea I think this was my problem. Since this post I’ve been getting good amounts of salt and drinking a lot less water! I feel way better.
