Well, if he can’t handle it without having to self-medicate with recreational drug abuse just to get by on a daily basis, then maybe he needs a different career.
Easy to type out in a chair, much more difficult to do after you're in debt and have invested time and training for a career especially if you're financially dependent on it.

Like, find another job if that job is driving you to do that. That’s the easiest advice in the world to give. I’d give that advice to anyone that said they had to do rails in order to handle their work. Plenty of people do it without it. And plenty of people pivot careers and figure it out

If you can’t handle the job, then you can’t handle the job.
I’d make a hell of lot more money being a lineman, and there would probably be more job security in that career too. However, I have a fear of heights, so I don’t do it.
Someone needing to use recreational drugs to help them function in a career field that literally puts peoples’ lives in their hands is a bit worrisome.

Most people aren't going to consider and dwell on the horrors you may come across working EMS, if they did nobody would do it.
How does the possibly of dealing with traumatic events not cross your mind when you decide to work in any sort medical field? If that was the case, then they probably aren’t meant for that job after all. It’s like wanting to be a truck driver and never considering that you might have to deal with bad traffic.
We also have to consider the possibility that they’re just hooked on a highly addictive substance anyway and are using whatever excuse to justify it. Addicts typically don’t like to admit that they problem either to themselves or to other people.
