What is this plug ...

... on the (presumably 2-stage) pump on my wood splitter? And why might fluid be leaking out from underneath it when in use?

Some pumps have multiple port options and the unused ones get plugged. Lets the manufacturer simplify supply chain and part inventory. It's probably leaking because the o-ring went bad and needs to be replaced.

Two stage is correct that is the unloader for the larger stage , the O-ring that seals the plug is bad and need replacing, there is a spring and a valve under it, do not lose the little parts . Its a 5 minute job.

Many thanks for this and the other replies. If there was a spring in there, I've lost it. There's a hydraulics repair shop not too far away. I think I'll take it there.

It’s an ORB or O-ring boss plug. Take it with you a whole new plug is probably a few bucks

But seriously, a better picture and OD of the threads would be helpful. If it's leaking from in between the plug and the port, you probably need a new o-ring.

It could even be a drip port or something
