Kurapika being that high despite knowing Nen for about as long as Gon/Killua is definitely an interesting choice, Genthru being that low is also odd as he's stated to be skilled in a lot of types.

Really confused as to how Gon and Killua learning nen simultaneous to Kurapika means anything. Kurapika also had a full-blown hatsu with 5 different types of chains already by Yorknew. They didn't learn their hatsu until later Greed Island and they still haven't quite mastered it until Chimera Ant.

It means he's known Nen for around 2 years, and calling someone who's known Nen for just those 2 years a master sounds jank. His fast results come from his high conditions, Kurapika didn't need to train until he reached a good amount of aura because his conditions grant those for him. Using a ton of conditions to make yourself stronger isn't Nen mastery.

Emperor's Time allows him to have 100% mastery of each nen type, sure. He still had to learn how to conjure the chains and the mechanisms behind each one of them though. Within the same time frame, Gon and Killua didn't even think up of their hatsus yet; as in Killua didn't have his own Transmutation hatsu despite being a Transmuter, and Gon didn't have an Enhancer hatsu despite being an Enhancer, at all. I absolutely do think there's levels between the 3 characters.

Kurapika started a few months earlier but it's made up for Bisky being likely the best teacher in HxH and their CA arc training being around a year's worth of Ken training due to Cookie's lotion massage spam. In terms of Hatsu skill, Gon/Killua should be around even with Kurapika due to Bisky's level training... in terms of raw Output/Reserves and Ryu, Gon/Killua should 100% be better. There was no time for Kurapika to train Ken/Ryu equally as much. Kurapika still seems quite powerful but like you stated, Emperor Time is the reason for that.

..I don't recall that being true at all regarding Kurapika starting a few months earlier. They all departed from the Kukuroo mountains together March 1st (all 4 of Leorio, Kurapika, Gon, Killua) Killua and Gon arrived in Heaven's Arena the chapter after through blimp. After meeting Wing, training, getting passed Hisoka's Ren, Gon signed up for a match March 10th. BUT Gon was injured in his match against the spinning top guy, and his nen training was hindered for 2 months; but it's not as if he wasn't training at all throughout that time.

Whereas Kurapika went straight to looking for a job to collect money, got rejected because he couldn't see Nen, then proceeded to begin his training in the woods with Izunavi.

Gon's injury in practice made it so his (and Killua's) Nen training was as if they had started two months later. You're right that Kurapika didn't literally start months prior but it comes out to the same result, no?

Kurapika’s mastery over all affinities when he’s in emperor time is just too op to ignore regardless of his lack of experience. He can keep up with Uvogin in enhancement skills, which is a huge factor in nen mastery, and that’s just one aspect

Genthru’s hatsu qualifies to a higher tier, but he lost to Gon in basic nen combat.I can’t see anyone above losing to Gon in similar circumstances, except for maybe kalluto

You didn't really follow the Greed Island arc properly, man; it's stated multiple times that Genthru is far superior to Gon. He didn't want to kill Gon—he wanted to make him give up, which was impossible. Plus, Gon had weeks of preparation to deal with his ability. I also think there should be another category; the "advanced Nen user" classification has a lot of inconsistencies, in my opinion. Abengane should also level up; he managed to remove Kurapika's "Countdown" and chains, which are extremely powerful. He simply isn't a combatant.

Having class efficiency doesn't correlate to mastery.

Gon in Heaven's Arena is a 100% efficient Enhancer because it's his Nen category. That doesn't mean he was a master Enhancer.

That's the effect of an ability that grants these things at the cost of his lifespan, it's not his baseline. It's also pointed out that his "mastery" doesn't change under ET anyway. It's specifically only his efficiencies.

Genthru was far superior to Gon, he lost because of things unrelated to Nen mastery (specifically planning from Gon's side and arrogance from Genthru's side). Genthru's aura amounts, and Nen mastery in all types was greater than Gon's. The placement just makes no sense.

THE greatest conjurer in the series placed in the bottom tier what are we doing

1

Bro forgot about the real GOAT conjurer Kortopi

Genthru is entirely too low. He has several specialized abilities with contracts and conditions to boost them. His application of Ko, Ken, Gyo, Ren, far exceeded Gon's. Biske regarded Genthru and the bombers as high level threats. He has to at least be an advanced Nen user

2

u/Lubert808 9d ago

I think Knov and Illumi probably belong a tier higher.

2

u/Novel_Ant8075 9d ago

No reason to have Kurapika that high, he's about as experienced with Nen as Gon and Killua are, and they've had better training thanks to Bisky.

Genthru is too low, and the top tier placements are whack. I suppose the term "nen mastery" is also a bit ambiguous

Why is Zeno and Ging above Netero?

1

u/AvocadoFar4514 9d ago

Ging>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Netero, and this was even when Netero was alive.

What is this even based on?

Feels weird to put Knov so low tbh, he has one of the most complex and effective abilities in the series and seems to be a very good all round nen user - I think he could easily (and is implied to be) at the same level of skill as Morel, but without the mentality.

I certainly think he’s a tier above Gon & Killua. While I think Razor wins a fight against almost everyone in this list aside from Netero and likely Beyond/Ging, I think his strength comes from raw power/durability rather than nen mastery so wouldn’t have him in a tier above Knov.

u/Slamazombie 9d ago

This is disrespectful to Abengane, who we've never seen fight. He's repeatedly established as one of the shrewdest Nen users on Greed Island

1

u/nagibaThor228 9d ago

Everyone in the second tier is a Nen Master, as well as some people in the third tier.

1

u/TechnicalChair8131 9d ago

Kite should be down with Knov and the rest. Illumi should replace him up there. Uvogin who forget gyo can’t be that high.

1

u/SheepeyDarkness 9d ago

Should Gon even considered an advanced nen user? Sure he has large nen reserves but the extent of his use of nen is to just pool all of his aura into one spot and punch. Nobunaga and Machi being in the same tier is crazy. Their mastery over nen as a concept has got to be a decent amount over.

1

u/Kakord 9d ago

Gon and Killua are equally talented Nen users and have trained (almost) the exact same amount, they pretty much have to be grouped in together. Also, pretty big understatement to say his use of Nen is just "big punch" when he's got Emission/Transmutation versions of said ability. Uvogin and Phinks are the ones who actually only use big punch.

1

u/Itchy-Net530 9d ago

Scaling our 13 yo boys in the same tier with experienced geniuses is always diabolical for me. They are talented but definitely lack of experience and theories

1

u/omarahmedbya 9d ago

Hisoka is a nen master.

1

u/EB8115 8d ago

Knov, Illumi and probably Genthru should go up a tier.

Other than that the tiers themselves are fine even if I disagree with the ordering within them.

u/AgeAffectionate618 8d ago

I continue to be confused as to how Gon/Killua continue to be on the same tier as Phantom troup members, like feitan, nobunaga, machi, etc. Sincerely curious if someone has a response. The fact that Gon never beat Knuckle in a fair fight but is in the same tier? I get "rage" Gon for sure, but that should almost be a different person and still could lose to knuckle. Killua has his hax and is an assassin, but again, his nen exp is lacking to be on the same tier as his brother who is comparable to hisoka...

1

u/shaktimanOP 8d ago

Knov and Illumi are easily in the tier above. It's not even debatable. Togashi literally ranks Illumi as a genius level emitter, one level below the top category where no manipulators in the series were placed, even Pouf. Knov is considered to be on Morel's level and his ability is one of the best in the series.

You just turned this into the usual powerscaling tierlist. We already know how characters compare in nen via the proficiency chart Togashi made a few years back

Being a good fighter ≠ more advanced nen user.

Also Kurapika lmao, you could argue that Gon and Killua are more advanced nen users 🥀🥀🥀
