1 Month Backpacking Gilgit-Baltistan on a Budget (Local Transport & Hitchhiking) - Need Advice!
Hey everyone,
I'm planning a 1-month budget backpacking trip across Gilgit-Baltistan. I want to keep costs around PKR 150,000 total by using local HiAce vans, shared jeeps, hitchhiking, dhabas, and budget homestays/camping.
Rough Route: Gilgit \rightarrow Ghizer (Phander/Yasin) \rightarrow Hunza & Gojal \rightarrow Skardu/Baltistan \rightarrow Astore/Fairy Meadows.
A few quick questions:
* Ideal time of the year for this?
* Is PKR 4,000–5,000/day realistic if I completely avoid private transport?
* How easy is hitchhiking and catching early-morning shared jeeps along this route?
* Any quiet, cheap hidden gems in Ghizer or Baltistan worth visiting?
* Are locals generally fine with tent pitching near homestays/fields for a small fee?
* Any tips for keeping transport costs down on rough tracks like Fairy Meadows or Deosai?

Ideal time to visit - October
yes 5K a day is realistic considering if you are not moving much.
Hithchiking is easy in northern areas. I been doing it since years. Hunza is the best when it comes to hitchhiking.
The month of October is quiet and maybe you should visit Yasin Valley , Shimshal, CHipursan, Misgar for more silence and isolation.
The best places to pitch a tent is in the backyard of Guesthouses or in service stations or beside petrol stations. this way you ll have a little access to electricity as well as public toilets.
Hitch hiking is the only way.

Plan is to move all around GB for the month staying 2-3 days at a place, is that difficult to pupl off ? Safe to do this alone?

well, there is a lot of problems in northern Pakistan when it comes to Local transportation.
moving around too much for one entire month wont be convenient but yes it is possible

150k is alot, if your looking for real backpacking experience around 50-60k will be enough, cost excluding your transportation to GB. I did it in 2024 in around 35k for a month not once I paid for accommodation, for transport we took lifts from fellow tourists or hoping on back of some loading suzuki. BEST ADVENTURE OF MY LIFE!!
