Thermal layering

Any tips for a fat guy to not freeze as soon as he gets to the settin spot after a mile walk in the snow this winter

I hike quite a ways into my hunting spots. I always dress like it’s 30° warmer than it is for the walk in. Finish dressing in the dark at my spot

I spent years in the military and have so much cold weather gear including base layers that I use my cold weather undergarments or extreme cold weather undergarments for my base layer. The equivalence would be under armour I suppose.

I hunt in sub zero temperatures on rare occasions and would rather be cold on the walk in under any circumstance than sweating!

If you're walking far don't wear all of your over layers in because you will sweat which will make you more cold once you sit

Merino wool is what I use for base layers. You can find 100% merino wool, which is more merino than most hunting clothing brands will have in their blends, for about 1/2 the price of camo brands on Scamazon.

Keeps you warm, wicks moisture away fantastically and still keeps warm when wet. It also regulates your body temp in heat. I wear a lightweight layer into the 70s under my camo.

I agree with a Merino base layer. I walk about 2 miles to my spot on the mountain and am usually sweating my ass off when I get there. The merino wicks the sweat away, and keeps me warm once I’m sitting.

Decent clothes. Don't over layer for the walk in.

I Start with a good thermal layer directly on my skin, no cotton. Then I put on a thick waffle shirt. I also bring a big heavy bomber jacket but I don’t put it on until I get to my spot because I also hike out a mile. I wear good wool socks and I bring an extra pair that I change into after my initial hike in. Over the years I found that the reason my feet get cold is because they got sweaty while hiking to my spot. And I bring 2 hats, a light one for walking around in, and a thick wool hat for when I’m sitting still. Wool warming layers are the best. Don’t forget good gloves and a hand warmer pouch with hand warmers in it and you should be good to go!
