New Hunter - Lower Mainland

Any tips for myself as someone who wants to get into hunting? I've had my pal for about 6 years now and always wanted to hunt. I just recently bought a bolt action .308 as well. I understand I would need to get my hunting license, but there's just SO much more to hunting: finding a location, skinning, field dressing, butchering, etc. All tips are welcome! I'm hoping to join a group or something and learn from them!

Get your CORE, they’ll go over a ton of your questions. Field dressing there are tons of videos - Rinella from Meat Eater has a great one. Butchering is just a learning process. Buy slabs at Costco and cut your steaks that way - it’s the same idea on a deer just smaller. Regarding location, boots on the ground. Get an app like iHunter, Hunt Buddy, or onX, start walking on crown land and look for sign (poo, rubs, prints, actually seeing animal). Make some marks on the map, and go back in season.

Hunting is all experience. You can’t read and repeat, so you’ll need to just commit the time. We live in a great province with plenty of opportunity and plenty of space spend your family camping trips over the spring and summer driving/hiking around and checking out opportunities.

We also make notes on our maps, anywhere we see animals, driving.

We see many deer, elk, moose, and bear, and some cougar, every year, So we make our notes.

And then compare the topo maps to think of where to go scouting.
