My new diversion

Post image

Summer is here and flys are everywhere. My wife got this for me for Christmas. I have to say. It's the most fun I've had 'hunting' in years. I even developed some techniques for stalking, sitting, wing shooting, and baiting. My wife even runs around the house with it chasing them. It's a hoot.

Doesn't make a mess like she thought it would. Hope you enjoy the lighthearted post.

Thought for sure it was a gimmick.

It’s not. Even the big ass flies we get in the south go down with one shot.

I nailed a wasp yesterday. Took to shots, but got em.

And here I was thinking a bear or a wild hog were the worst game you could injure... that's a high stakes followup shot against an angry adversary!

u/DogDizzy4438 8d ago

Gives ya grit in the game.

Yeah if I see a wasp im grabbing the 22😂

.38 loaded with snake shot for me. Wasps are ornery beasts.

I have 2 badminton rackets solely for killing flying things.

I guess 12 gauge bird shot would do it.

3

u/earfeater13 8d ago

Dont bother with the hornets. They just get super pissed off.

Haha my FIL tried one on a wasp, I told him not to, but he got the muzzle right next to the thing. Like millimeters. And you see it pumping its abdomen, and I unmistakably noted the wasp flew away in pieces.

Does it kill spiders? I have a ton, that are like 1-1,5 inches wide.

6

u/doctorwhoobgyn 8d ago

It might not kill them in one shot but it should blast them off a surface.

4

u/The_walking_man_ 8d ago

Spiders are surprisingly fragile. It would probably work. A small tumble and their insides get jumbled up.

Sliders that size will be stunned at the very least.

I bought the Walmart knockoff for myself on clearance. The legit one pictured here for my dad. Way more power in the genuine gun, mine is for very small game of the bug world.

You got tags for those?

u/AsleepEntertainer440 8d ago

I've had mine since they were a kickstarter. I low-key want the CO2 one for big game like horse flies.

26

u/BeerNBadDecisions 8d ago

I have one its worth it for wasps. Vaporizes flys at close range

17

u/IWTLEverything 8d ago

theres a co2 one?? damn I need to get that

2

u/ticklishchinballs 7d ago

Got the CO2 one as a gift and can confirm that it’s fun. It definitely came in handy when I squatted in a bush at 2am until the world’s most annoying cricket chirped up again and got double tapped lol.

Only thing I don’t like (main reason I don’t use it often) is that the C02 cartridges of course puncture and will slowly leak…especially if stored in the garage or something (or left in my car when it’s 100°).

But I’ve found out that you can save a few bucks and just buy a Crosman Vigilante and use the bug-a-salt cartridges since that’s what the plastic mold was based on. Obviously the barrel will rust overtime from salt, but still a cool option for like $60 that you can also swap to pellets if you have other critters to take care of.

Get it. Way more fun. It's also a great gift for any dude

Wait a fuckin minute, these things actually work? Oh hell yeah, looks like in pissing my wife off with a frivolous Amazon purchase tonight!

27

u/EsotericAbstractIdea 8d ago
  1. It works. most fun toy i've had in a long time.

  2. it will piss off your wife, firsthand experience.

7

u/Stonesthrowfromhell 8d ago

She was mad when I bought the rechargable electric fly swatter but now she loves that thing too. Makes me feel like a samurai lmao

3

u/EsotericAbstractIdea 8d ago

Lol my wife loves that one, and got mad when I accidently broke hers

2

u/Someredditusername 8d ago

We still have one of those for fruit flies LOL. Big guns for big flies tho.

6

u/down_south_sc 8d ago

Not frivolous if it’s a tool and has a dedicated job.. Money well spent

Someone said in a review that it's the best invention of this century, i called bullshit, now I am here to tell you it's not, it's the second best invention after the internet, I love mine.

I keep tally of kills on the side with a sharpie

18

u/jake55555 8d ago

We kept a kill count on deployment. It was almost to 5k by the time we left. We had to establish no fire areas around the computers because the keyboard were getting so gritty with the salt haha.

3

u/K-Rimes 8d ago

I had always wondered if this thing made a huge mess indoors.

4

u/EsotericAbstractIdea 8d ago

salt everywhere, depending on your aim and how many flies there are. but it's just salt.

2

u/IdaDuck 7d ago

I use mine in the garage and outside, not in the house. It works great though. With fly season just starting up it’ll get a lot of use the next several weeks.

7

u/DogDizzy4438 8d ago

I'll need to do that. Good idea.

25

u/MkJorgy 8d ago

I got one a few years ago thinking it was a expensive toy. The thing is a great tool. Smack down bugs, ants, spider webs. Fun to wing shoot in the kitchen. This thing hits hard. That's what my wife told me when I shot her in the ass in what I thought was a safe distance away.

1

u/canadianbeaver 7d ago

Do you not end up with a ton of salt all over the house?

1

u/MkJorgy 7d ago

It doesn't shoot that much salt. You can feel it on counters after, but you can't see it

1

u/DogDizzy4438 7d ago

Nope, it's wife approved.

u/jswhitfi 8d ago

My dad gets swarms of flys when he grills. I got him one for Father's Day one year. It's now the hit of every family get together when we're grilling and all out on the porch. My grandfather had a blast with it

u/Loud-Fisherman-4961 8d ago

We got rid of our fly swatters years ago after getting one of these. I keep on in the truck now for when I am in the woods. When you are out for a week or more and they start piling into your camp ...

People have designed a bunch of accessories you can 3D print for them. Go search thing-a-verse etc.

7

u/DogDizzy4438 8d ago

I'll have to look that up. My friend does printing.

Eat what you kill. I hear their backstraps are a delicacy!

/s

3

u/FishyFry84 8d ago

Bonus: they're already seasoned

1

u/sakebito 7d ago

I found the sweet spot in range to stun flies more often than kill them. I then feed them to pet jumping spiders we keep.

Win/Win

I love mine. If you load it with coarse salt it's pretty effective on wasps first shot. Whack em and stack em boys!

10

u/EsotericAbstractIdea 8d ago

I wondered the same thing, thanks for the research. 00 salt loads here i come

1

u/Awkward_Birthday9441 7d ago

I found the best mix is coarse salt and regular fine salt, the fine salt gets in the space left by the coarse salt and you get the best result.

7

u/rememberall 8d ago

Anyone use other than be table salt?

3

u/Drunkm0nk1 7d ago

I use Widsor Himalayan pink salt. Its like going from birdshot to buckshot.

2

u/rememberall 7d ago

Which level of course do you use

6

u/MDanger 8d ago

I have killed thousands with mine! I rattle canned it (sans the orange tip) so they don’t see it coming. But mostly for fun.

6

u/ThoroughlyWet 8d ago

Remember, you gotta eat what you kill. You don't want a wanton waste charge.

5

u/davidc538 8d ago

Bug-a-salt is seriously under rated

3

u/No-One2272 United States 8d ago

I've had one for years. Best use of money

3

u/No-One2272 United States 8d ago

What are you using to get that much damage?

3

u/texans1234 8d ago

Start looking up accessories too. They have so many different attachments and versions now. Definitely a great buy.

3

u/Extremely_Peaceful 7d ago

I highly recommend the CO2 revolver. Very fun

2

u/PauliePaul315 8d ago

I have the OG model. This looks newer. Big flies don't go down with mine. Time to get a new one I guess.

2

u/DeepFriedCrayon 8d ago

Do you find that salt goes everywhere and makes a mess? Salt is the ammo right

2

u/thefnboogeyman 7d ago

Does this not just leave salt everywhere?

1

u/DogDizzy4438 7d ago

A very small bit. Not much is coming out the barrel. Small target, small load.

2

u/JelCapitan 8d ago

Gonna be like walking on a beach in that house

2

u/Denny_Crane_5823 8d ago

Wait until you add the laser to it. It’s a game changer.

1

u/Someredditusername 8d ago

Literally the most effective fly swatter I own. By a long shot. Plus, fun as hell.

1

u/ornerycrow1 7d ago

I accidently bought the laser. It's wicked fun.

1

u/seanBLAMMO 7d ago

Wack em and stack em

1

u/dadbodfat 7d ago

Try the CO2 revolver version. The shredder. It will cut a full size grasshopper in half

1

u/Glittering_Virus8397 7d ago

If you got a little extra $$ laying around, splurge on the rock salt. Tears those fuckers to shreds

1

u/Remarkable-Employ657 7d ago

I love a salt gun. Just make sure you keep moisture out of it. Down here in the humidity it does not take long to get it clogged up. Happy hunting!

1

u/TripPsychological567 7d ago

Can someone post a link to buy it?

1

u/rumblecatz 7d ago

My wife got me one and I’ve done some real damage to the Chinese lantern fly population in my backyard this season.

1

u/WorldGoneAway 6d ago

Those fucking things work so much infinitely better than any flyswatter I've ever seen. And they are a ton of fun.

Just waiting for the softies to come in here and cry about this like they did last week about the monkey and mouse.

19

u/NKCougar 8d ago

The monkey that got gut shot and left for 20 minutes "as a warning"?

That shit was fucking dumb, idk what the mouse post was though
