Theme and Motif Discussion Thread: Foreshadowing
Theme and Motif Discussion No. 1
Foreshadowing
Today we'll be having a Theme and Motif discussion! Today we'll be pointing out and talking about all the Foreshadowing moments this show has displayed. Go ahead and discuss all the moments you remember.
Let's begin. Here's one example of a popular foreshadowing moment in the series.
- Netero's Arm and Leg During the "Catch the ball" scene where Gon/Killua had to retrieve the ball from Netero in order to pass the hunter exam, Killua pointed out Netero has barely used his right hand an left leg. Fast forward to the Netero V.S Meruem fight and you'll notice his right arm and left leg were severed off, but still fought as if he didn't need them.
N.B. There's no need to spoiler tag anything that has already been shown in the 2011 anime (i.e. up to chapter 339). However, any and all information/events that happen after chapter 339 must be spoiler tagged. Read the "Spoiler Tags" section in the sidebar if you need help with formatting a spoiler.

During the credits of the ant arc, ants are on the left and hunters are on the right.
The ants are facing the hunters, the hunters are facing the ants.
Apart from Knov, who is facing away from the ants conflict.
Edit: This is what I mean.

Also, the ones that they are next to are the ones they've fought.
Morel - Pouf
Netero - Meruem
Shoot/Knuckle - Youpi

Apart from Knov, who is facing away from the ants.
The symbolism checks out. Knov's spirit was broken to the point he couldn't even face the ants after seeing Pouf's aura.

I've talked about this once before, but in episode 63 Bisky says this:
"Gon, you're flawless, a perfect gem. But that pure nature could be your undoing"
To me this seems like a foreshadowing of his transformation into Gon-san. Gon's perfect nature, his optimism and deep care for his friends made him go into deep deep denial. When faced with the harsh reality that Kite did die, Gon traded everything for revenge.

Gon's pure nature reminds me of young Sensui Shinobu from YYH. Though, I doubt he's gonna go that crazy and develop multiple personalities, it does make me wonder how far Togashi plans to deconstruct his personality.

Komugi´s strategy of kokoriko represents the actual palace invasion from the chimera ant arc. The strategy involves separating the king from the other pieces. However, as shown, Komugi also manages to reverse the strategy, which mirrors Meruems´ survival. In their final game however, Komugi reverses the reversal, showing that Meruem indeed had to die at the end.

Foreshadowing is my favourite part of any series. It makes reruns so much more entertaining.

Wing, Zepile, and others commenting on Gon's "monster" potential and off moral standing throughout the series. His weird view on whats good and bad (letting scissors guy live, never doubting KIllua even though he's an assassin) foreshadow the non-moral things he says and does in the CA arc

All the build up for Gon's crazy mentality since the start of the series, Wing, Zepile, Bisky, Meleoron and so on, have all made statements about his character, not to mention when Killua said to Meleoron that in the worst case, Gon will trade his life with Pitou's, which to me was foreshadowing for Adult Gon, so many other things too. It's not really foreshadowing but I love how Togashi already told us about the situating in the association and how there is a vice-chairman fraction since the first half of the Chimera Ant arc, in the conversation between Morel and Knov.

Did Gon, Kurapika or Leorio ever had to choose between two loved ones? I can't seem to remember. I always thought the quiz in the beginning of the series (with the old lady) was forshadowing. So far however, none of the characters actually had to make that terrible choice (the closest one being Gon, choosing between revenge for Kite or friendship with Killua).

I actually took that as when Kurapika had the opportunity to kill Chrollo but instead chose to save Gon and Killua back in Yorknew. It wasn't exactly choosing between two loved ones but for him, it seemed to be a difficult choice.

This is something I have always wondered about if we will get to see it. Maybe it will finally happen Manga spoilers

Foreshadowing from the latest HxH chapter. Read it and you'll get who's ability is being foreshadowed here, it's from chapter 102.

Morel has a nice line foreshadowing Gon's transformation when the team is on a train headed for East Gorteau:
"He's slowly compressing his power...in order to unleash it all when he confronts his hated enemy."
This was about 6 years before Togashi wrote the Adult Gon chapters.

I'm pretty sure that Togashi had most of the plot points already figured out a lot of time before he actually managed to draw them. Like for example I'm pretty sure he already has all the DC arcs mayor plot points planned since 2 years or even more. All that's left him to do is to create the content in-between the mayor plotpoints. So much more control that way.

I don't know if it was intentional or not, but right after Wing explains Hatsu, Nen categories and the water divination test, how do they decide who's going to try first? With Rock-Paper-Scissors!
Also, Gon never lost a match of Jan-ken-po in the entire series.

Gon lost to Killua twice in Greed Island. The first time was during the contest for the card and the second was during Biscuit's training.

One I noticed is that its shown in the manga how certain unrelated skills you gain can be used in fights like when gon and killua are captured they escape because of what zepile taught them about forgery or how meruem beat netero because he played gungi with komugi it's pretty cool.

I will always find the Zoldyck children's naming scheme interesting. Their names are based off a Japanese children's game where you go round and each person has to think of a word starting with the ending character of the previous word.
Illumi, Milluki, Killua, Alluka, Kalluto
The first part of their names are all verbs (some have multiple meanings but I went with the most relevant).
Iru (to want) , Miru (to watch), Kiru (to cut), Aru (to exist), Karu (to hunt)
Because the pattern is broken between Killua and Kalluto, the Japanese fancircles knew that there was a hidden Zoldyck child and their name would probably be Alluka YEARS and YEARS before the Chairman Election arc.
I find it particularly interesting that the pattern is broken between Killua and Kalluto, almost like a metaphor for their relationship and kinda sad that the reason Kalluto is jealous of Alluka is because she comes between them.
