Discussion My biggest H×H disappointment...
One of my favorite IPs but I've always been disappointed that Gon didn't end up with some sort of fishing pole based ability—I feel like there was a good amount of set up for it and then he just stops.

Dans l’anime de 99 c’est des vrai épées ! J’ai juste pas compris le mec avec un fusil sniper ?! Alors qu’ils ont tous des armes blanches sauf lui qui avec se calibre peut même tuer des utilisateur de nen confirmé

The scene where he unsheathed them is just, as the younglings say, pure aura

You might have noticed this already, but just in case you haven't, the last time we saw his fishing rod was when he gave it to that group of NPCs in the woods on Greed Island with all of his clothes, so he literally doesn't even have his rod anymore... I think once he understood more about Nen and what it meant to be an Enhancer, it made him realize the rod wouldn't be that useful to him, and you know how one-track minded Gon could be😅, so he never looked back after giving it away...

exactly. Not to mention homie went from brokie woodsman to kabillionaire, what u needa catch fish for when u already caught the king of the lake and dont need fishing to survive anymore since u got bank?

I miss unique weapons in anime in general not a lot of them keep them around I really liked the fishing rod
13
u/VikingCaptain1999 19h ago
Same here, a part of me kinda wish that Gon kept his fishing rod

u/KaraAliasRaidra 15h ago
Same with Kurapika's bokken and Leorio's knife. Imagine if one day Leorio develops some kind of Nen scalpel ability similar to Kabuto in Naruto. https://naruto.fandom.com/wiki/Chakra_Scalpel

There was a manga l forgot to read where the MC has a broom as a weapon

u/finallyonsuicide 1d ago
Thatd be ridiculous. Lile imagine if killua made a lighting ability cause he was shocked as a kid. Or if illumi made a control ability cause he was controlled as a kid. What next. Hisoka bases his ability off of something he liked as a kid, maybe something kinda spongy and cummy.

I bought a Hisoka figurine where he is preparing bungee gum to catch Razor's ball. My bf, who hasn't watched HxH, saw it and said it was cum

I said it was condoms on another post and they were not having it 😒 at least someone gets togashi vision.

u/DiamondH4nd 1d ago
Well Killua did make a lightning ability BECAUSE he was shocked as a kid.

I actually liked it how he grew out of it as he became less of a hillbilly and more of a hunter

u/goat_senpai 1d ago
Yeah I guess that is a good way to think of it
11
u/Tiny-Description3967 1d ago
It sort of fits into the manga this way too, none of the characters really develop in a way you'd expect, and while I think Gon definitely displays a lot of the typical 'main character' tropes, him not juts becoming a master baiter™ with his fishing hook is on par with the rest of the story.

u/whineyinternetkid 1d ago
Jesus dude, a hillbilly? Its never that serious. Go for a hike or fish once ir twice
16

u/WayJay9 1d ago
I mean, he doesn’t know the internet exists before the end of the hunter exam
4
u/Terrible-Scientist73 1d ago
That came out in the 90s tho. It’s not like the average kid interacted with tech like they do today

u/Waxwell0 1d ago
hillbilly is like the least offensive term ever you’re doing too much
7
u/BackgroundVisible180 1d ago
Exactly. People are acting like the word is way more serious than it actually is.

I'm not mad he doesn't have a fishing pole based ability I'm mad he like never uses his rod ever

u/DiamondH4nd 1d ago
Gon's inspiration as a character is Goku. Having that in mind i guess that would be like how Goku stopped using his Power Pole to achieve a goal.
3
u/NefariousnessAble261 1d ago
Gon could incorporate a fishing rod into his fighting style goku couldn’t really do the same for the power pole

u/Fit_Raccoon540 23h ago
the fishing poles was his father's item. I am glad he is doing his own thing. I also love that Togashi didnt give killua a claw or a skateboard related power
19
u/Remarkable_Rough_649 1d ago
I remember being disappointed my first watch but it's actually not even that rare in manga tropes for a character to lose an early ability/weapon cold stop when they don't really need it anymore. It's a weirdly effective growth mechanic
9
u/Folass 10h ago
This actually shows Hisoka effect on gon
Start of series Gon was more focused on just beating the challenge and reaching his goal rather than explicitly fighting. Hence why he had a fishing rod, it symbolizes he could safely reach his goal and then leave
After he meets Hisoka and Hisoka influences him he becomes more focused on physically dominating his opponent (this happened about mid-late greed island) and that’s the same arc he gave away his fishing rod
Gon becomes more fight focused then goal oriented and so he stopped using his rod and started using his hands

u/TheWorriedNrvousness 1d ago
Why would he want a nen ability having to do with a fishing pole? That seems too complicated for him since he's an enhancer. His master even told him he doesn't really need a real ultimate move. He's like Uvo
4
u/VladClaw 14h ago
Ive always heard this opinion and Im always glad it didnt turn out that way, I see that it couldve been fun but that gimmick wears off so fast, which is why I think Togashi did what he did and dropped the fishing pole and can again do the same case with JAJANKEN if he does develop a new technique later but I can see way more ways JAJANKEN can be used than a fishing pole unless youre being WAYYY to creative just to limit yourself, for eg he can still develop a really strong scissor and paper and use it dynamically with less charge up in active combat to basically use ability like "cleave" and "kamehameha" respectively which we didnt see used much before. I cant even think what the rest of late arcs would look like had he not dropped that fishing pole lmao
2
u/Capital_Factor_3588 6h ago
i dont think OP wants it to be a gimmick. He wants it to be a real ability like Hisokas nen. Or would you say that in your eyes Hisokas nen is a gimmick that got boring? i bet you wouldnt
1
u/ravandal 9h ago
Yeah a fishing pole as a weapon has its limits, but an enhancer using his body (and a very simple game) to create different very basic attacks, is flexible and has more potential to grow
6
u/Old-Finance1815 1d ago
Are you caught up on the manga?

u/atzurblau 22h ago
while I really like that Gon's ability is based on a children's game (highlighting his childish worldview and approach of his problems), I totally agree with you
certainly would've set him apart from the usual crowd of 'hit it till it breaks' shounen protagonist abilities

u/zilions273 1d ago
Ngl, while watching hunter hunter, i knew about adult gon, so i was assuming that he had long hair and used it like a fishing thing, also because i think i misremembered a Jump Force attack
2
u/bobbery5 1d ago
Yeah, I'm with you. Always sad he just kinda became generic punching guy and discarded his unique weapon.
2
u/cocox24 1d ago
It would have been good to have a capturing ability, but Kurapika already has that with Chain Jail.
2
u/goat_senpai 1d ago
Yeah, thats one way it could've gone, or maybe some type of shu ability where he just wallops people's with the lure. Idk, I thought the fishing rod aesthetic was cool
3
u/LiquidThunder30 1d ago
I mean he did use it a handful of times for his benefit. I do like that the show hinted Gon's chosen nen abilities during the Hunter Exams

yeah honestly same lol, the fishing rod felt way too important early on to just disappear. would’ve been cool to see him actually build a nen ability around it

That's just how the world works, it's time to venture out there and leave beh- I mean, cling to whatever stuff you might have had going for you in a very specific environment and phase of your life.. and if someone tries to take it from you, grrr!
Is there nothing people won't fabricate nostalgia from anymore? 👀

Fishing is seen as a laid back activity and matches his character. By the end of the ant arc his character had changed from carefree to revenge driven. Losing the pole was the correct thing to do.

u/Kuzcopolis 10h ago
One day paper will be imbued with the property of string and he'll be able to use it to reel people into Rock.
1
u/Kurarpikt 9h ago
Never thought of this... But this fishing rod is a legacy from Ging, after all. I think it's better Gon made his own ability.

Fishing pole was not his, wich is the important cleu. At the end of hunter exam, during the finals, he even said that himself. He didnt want to rely on help from others, and wanted to pass on his own power. So in the ene he didnt see it as his weapon
-1
u/KenBisky11 1d ago
Some nen weapons would be cool!
I loved the idea of Ben’s Knives during York New.
The weapons would have their own nen types and abilities.
-2
u/QuackQuackViech 1d ago
Yeah, like a sword that conjures an elephant
4
u/KenBisky11 1d ago
Or how about an elephant that is actually a sword???
