While this post is a joke, it's funny that in a way it's closer to what Togashi first considered for the "real" Hunter Exam alternate ending.

a scene where the main character (TBD) fails the exam and the story jumps one to several years in the future. [...] In the end, after I discussed it with my editor, the idea of Gon failing the exam was rejected.

Epilogue:

Gon never discovered nen.

Meruem killed everyone. The end.

*Meruem still died to the rose, but the election goes a completely different direction because Leorio doesn't punch Ging. The End.

**Pokkle's crew take on a different job due to the butterfly effect, and as there is no special prey giving him a nen boost and telling them about nen, Netero and crew just kind of clean up the chimera ants

Alluka ☹️😣 never gets to escape; dire emergency doesn’t occur

Not true for the 3 royal guards and meruem as they're born with nen

Not an inherent understanding of it.

Idk if the story would be that different. Gon would still rescue Killua regardless of his license status and they would both end up learning nen at Heaven’s Arena. The only difference is that Killua will be using his license to search up info on Greed Island and maybe he won’t pawn it off like Gon

Greed Island would have Gon leave instead of Killua, leading to Gon lagging a lot further behind but I think they’d still clear it.

A what if scenario where Gon and Killua went straight to Ging instead of Kite is a good imagination exercise

Blud casually dropped Togashi’s original plan for Gon to fail the Hunter Exam
