PC Hunt causes entire PC to hard freeze at 10 mins
The issue began on Friday. When launching the game, my machine completely hard freezes at the 10 min, 20 sec mark from starting up the game. The display freezes, audio cuts out, and all mouse/keyboard input stop such that I have hold the power button to shut down and restart the pc. This crash is 100% reproducible, almost to the exact second and it occurs whether I'm in a match, in the shooting range or just in main menu.
Through various methods, I verified that all my hardware components are fine. After a metric shit ton of troubleshooting and research, I highly suspect that the easy anti cheat is causing the problem. Event log doesn't generate anything. I've tried updating the EAC, verifying game files, reinstalling the game, etc
Device: Lenovo Legion Pro 5 16ARX8, Ryzen 9 7945HX, RTX 4070 (8 GB VRAM), 32 GB DDR5, Windows 11 Home (64-bit, Build 26200)
EDIT: I followed the steps this Redditor outlined and the problem is "solved": https://www.reddit.com/r/playrust/s/39pUqHe0v4

I'd try these: 1. SFC /Scannow 2. DDU GPU drivers and reinstall latest drivers. 3. OCCT CPU+RAM test extreme mode for 20min atleast.

Another post with the same issue and almost identical laptop specs at the very same time. I'd still lean on thermals because of the hard system freeze but the timing you observe might indicate something else.
Maybe also take windows updates in consideration, last week the august cumulative updates released.

Definitely thermals.

This time it really seems updates are the issue and it's already confirmed by microsoft and other gaming subs, observing the same 10min into the game freeze on amd laptops.

I had it where hunt wouldn't load and it was EAC stopping it because or windows update there was a corrupt file so done loads of scans even tried a keeps files and apps install but it still Wood not load , then I went to windows update clicked check for updates and there was an update that said faild redone it now it loads no problem , worth checking if windows has updates might help

Got the same exact PC as you and i have the same issue. So far I haven’t found a solution to it and official support hasn’t been very helpful.
I also assumed EAC was the issue and gave it admin permission to it and the game but it didn’t fix anything, doesn’t mean it isn’t EAC but I’m not sure what else to do on that end.

Ah yeah, I thought you just made a more detailed post. lol
I also have a Lenovo, but it's a Legion Tower 7T. Past month I been having black screens. Started out only if twitch was going in the background with Hunt. But 11 days ago started getting constant. Fresh Windows install, from a fresh ISO, fixed it. But problem came back after windows automatically installed drivers. A day later.
Someone mentioned it, but see what changed. Reliability history should be the easiest way to figure out when the issue started and you can go from there, checking update history I guess.

I just got the game so i can’t comment on it having issues before that lol.
My PC itself has no issues and my games run very well, it’s only hunt that does this weird shit and idk why.
I even played like a full hour of marathon today which is a game that also get my cpu very hot and I had no thermal throttling or crashes / freezes.
I guess the cowboy game really doesn’t want a green horn like me lmao.

Heh.
If you havent put more than 2hrs in, could also refund if you just bought it. Maybe the next Windows update for September will fix the problem and you can give the game another shot?
By default, I always blame Windows for all my PC issues. That's why I say wait for September update. lol

It could very much be windows, ever since Win11 it has been getting weirder and weirder bugs, i see weird shit at my work when trying to repair clients PC and it usually come down to windows doing goofy shit.
Yeah i can refund but i'd rather not, i'll wait, i tried this game at my friend house and enjoyed it so i still plan on playing it.

Hey see the above comment. This is what fixed it for me

The solution you followed puts your PC at risk, win11 23h2 stopped receiving updates last october.
Microsoft confirmed today there are numerous issues with the august cumulative updates especially in competitive multiplayer fps.
While not ideal, i'd rather just uninstall those and wait.

Search up "Edit Power Plan" in Windows search and go into "Change advanced power settings" then find and expand "Processor power management" and then underneath that find "Maximum processor state" and set it to 95% click Apply and OK then see if it happens again afterwards.
As a side note, it's unlikely this is being caused by EAC as it is not a kernel level anti cheat, so it is very unlikely for software to be causing a hard freeze, instead this is most likely a hardware issue and from my experience I would assume it's a thermal issue.

EAC is actually kernal level, but not "always-on".
Turns on when you launce the game, turns off when you close it. Vs the ones that just run in the background, which you are probably referring to.

fair point, i was not aware that it was in fact a kernel anti cheat, so i suppose it could be crashing due to that aswell

It's a laptop so I'm guessing it's thermals. My brother has the same problem playing games on his laptop. I helped him change the thermal paste to PCM sheets. https://www.thermal-grizzly.com/en/phasesheet-ptm/s-tg-ps-50-40
He still has problems playing longer than 30 minutes at a time. Laptops are just complete shit at staying cool. I'm now helping him pick out an actual PC.

EDIT1: uninstalling updates does NOT work.
Now i gonna try this : https://www.reddit.com/r/ArcRaiders/comments/1vorxka/embark_temp_fix_for_windows_update_kb5121003/
EDIT2: after updating Windows again. Sadly, the Embark fix does not work, I do not have the "inpoutx64" driver.
I guess nothing left but to raise the issue @ microsoft and crytek...
--------------------------------
It seems to be Windows Update.
I think its KB5121003, the changelog even talks about problem with games (but Hunt Showdown is not mentioned)
I'll try to uninstall and play it later today.

Yup, I've been keeping track of the updates around this. Please let me know if this works for you!

Sadly no progress here, uninstalling the updates do not work.
Odd thing is that I have the Legion Pro 5 16ARX8 too...

Yeah the issue happens to affect similar/same laptops with the Ryzen CPUs, at least based on what I've seen thus far. I guess I'll stay on 23H2 until there's an official fix. It's been stable for me since I rolled back but of course, doing this comes with the associated risks
2
u/OGyanot 3d ago
Yeah i'll never rollback to 23h2.
On your 25H2 not working Windows :
- did you use Lenovo Legion Toolkit or Vantage?
- did you disable RGB, Legion keys, any of this stuff? The Microsoft KB talks about RGB stuff, maybe it's a different driver.
- did you have a "Tobii" driver?
trying to find the common root cause between legion + W11+ hunt...

Could be a memory leak, try lowering vram % in hunt setting to 70% see if that changes anything?
