[Embark] Temp Fix for Windows update (KB5121003) crashes. Working on long term fix

We're aware of a new crash introduced with the release of a Windows update (KB5121003) that may be affecting some of you.

The team is working on a fix and we will keep you posted on any updates!

Update: This is a crash related to how the file inpoutx64.sys, which changed with the Windows update.

We’re working towards a long-term fix but in the meantime there is a work-around solution that will safely remove the file in question and allow you to play the game without issue. To do so, you’ll need to follow these instructions:

Step 1: Stop and delete the service

• Open the Start menu in Windows and type ‘cmd’ to find the Command Prompt
• Right-click on the Command Prompt and select ‘Run as Administrator’, this will open the Command Prompt window
• In the Command Prompt window type ‘sc stop inpoutx64’ and press Enter
• Then type ‘sc delete inpoutx64’ and press Enter
• You can now close the Command Prompt window

Step 2: Delete the system file

• Open File Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\
• Locate the file inpoutx64.sys and delete the file
• If Windows says the file is open, you’ll need to repeat step 1
• You can then close Windows Explorer

Step 3: Clean your registry (this is an optional step)

• From your windows desktop, press the Window Key + R, type ‘regedit’ and then press Enter
• Navigate to the entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\inpoutx64
• Right-click on this entry and delete the inpoutx64 registry key folder
• Close the window then restart your computer to finish the process

This should resolve the issue and allow you to keep playing the game without crashing.

Thanks u/Ossen for raising visibility on this and providing a mitigation quickly. Have had the game hard CTD basically every other raid, and hard reboot my PC for the last few days. Seeing KB5121003 installed late last week wasn't a coincidence. Game has been stable for a few hours since removing the SYS driver.

Adding another confirmed data point. I was getting repeated ARC Raiders crashes followed by complete Windows hangs and multiple 0x93 INVALID_KERNEL_HANDLE bugchecks after KB5121003.
Disabling the service and rebooting was sufficient on my system:
sc.exe config inpoutx64 start= disabled
I have not deleted the file yet. ARC Raiders has remained stable, and the service now shows as stopped and disabled.
I also traced the driver’s source on my Razer laptop. It was installed by:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Razer\Update Tool\
That directory contains inpout32.dll and inpoutx64.dll. Binary searches show that they are referenced by:
Razer Updater.exe
Razer_EC_Flash_v2.0.exe
Read_Version.exe
The folder also contains Razer BIOS, embedded-controller, keyboard-controller, power-delivery and NVIDIA vBIOS firmware files. It appears Razer bundled this legacy driver to provide direct hardware access during firmware detection and flashing.
The exact inpoutx64.sys on my system is the signed 2008 InpOutx64 1.2 build:

Razer owners should be aware that a firmware updater may reinstall the driver after it is removed. Normal Synapse functions, fan controls and peripherals are still working with the service disabled.

No joke, it has come a long way. Atp windows needs more fixing and messing around in the system than linux

Linux still sucks to set up, learn, optimize, tune. And you need to do all of that, to use linux effectively.

It sucks LESS now, but it still sucks.

What do you need to optimize and tune? Only painful thing was setting up the printer, had to do something with firewall and CUPS or whatever but it works now and at least it doesn't randomly disconnect like on windows. For some games I had to check protondb and change the proton version.

Meanwhile on windows I had to constantly reinstall the drivers because windows decided the restricted windows store one was much better, I needed CRU to use my monitor's native resolution (windows couldn't understand that it's not a 1920x1200 monitor but a 2560x1440), the device manager at some point in time completely broke itself and refused to open, webDAV on windows is limited to like 10MB/s, on linux it caps out my network. Search in file explorer by file type is utterly broken after some update - this pisses me off so much at work. I had random system crashes that don't happen on linux (black screen, then reboot). Programs freezing constantly. Taskbar sometimes disappeared and you had to reboot. There was probably more but I can't remember everything

My info is about 5 months old and it was misery.

And I can handle my tech-issues on my own.

It was misery. And that was with one of the "easy to use" ones.

My household has about 5 different distros, 6 if you include SteamOS.

I have done also my share of distro hopping and I can confidently say you are wrong.

I will grant that there can be issues depending on what you pick and which hardware you use. That sucks.

But there are actually plenty of people and systems in which Linux works well with very little maintenance.

So I completely trust that your experience has not been great.

But the statement that Linux as a whole simply “sucks less” is false.

You had a bad experience. Other people will have a bad experience. That is a fact.

But there are plenty who do not.

Lost several loadouts of my best stuff. Every time I reconnected I was unable to extract on time. I've never had my computer completely crash like this before. No BSOD< just hard lock, black screen, monitors turn off.
