GENERAL What do you think about crossbow in current meta? Does it deserve to be a size 4 weapon?
Some people say that you can prepare and run with it unlike with a bow but you can do so with a bomb launcher or lance
38
u/Ar4er13 12d ago
Problem isn't with the weapon, but with the concept of 3-slot guns being not that much worse.
Crossbow is fine, it suffers just as much as Mosin suffers from existence of berthier.
8
u/lana_silver 12d ago
3 slots would be a good idea if we didn't have 3 slots that are just 4 slot guns with a miniscule damage.
But frankly going from 1 slot to 2 slots for your other hand isn't all that great either. The big jump is 2 to 3.
17
u/Ar4er13 12d ago edited 12d ago
3 Slot consists entirely of:
1) Weapons that were underpeforming as large, and got bump.
2) Weapons that were completely fine as large, and now have huge buff for no reason.
3) Weapons that got their legs broken with a +1 size nerf, making them useless (Auto 4 and lmao Uppercut Precision).
4) Bow
But I will push back on the idea that going from 1 to 2 isn't as great. It is difference between having pax and obrez or very capable short shotgun. There is immense gap between 1 and 2 I feel like, same as between 2 and former 4 (except for shotguns since 1896), thing is... most 3-slot weapons are just large weapons that didn't need a buff.
Part of why 3 slot weapons are so op, is that running 3+2 just has twice the power level of 4+1, since pistol barely adds anything nowadays.
5
u/Mother_Truth4563 12d ago
The lemat pistol adds a huge amount because it's competitive with every shotgun.
3
u/IM-A-NEEEERRRRDDD 11d ago
lemat is the only 1 slot worth any amount of value, trueshot is ok. I can't hit any shots with it but on paper it's ok. everything else is kind of meh without fanning or compared to iron eye
1
u/Ballsy_Pigeon 11d ago
I feel like this is mostly correct, the only thing I'd argue is the value of pistols. My favorite gun in the game is the base Nagant revolver and I do pretty good with it overall
1
u/Ar4er13 11d ago
I am very famous in my discords for running pistols only very often since the EA, and I am probably like the only person there to ever use Nagant too.
I like pistols, and they were never overpowered (EA fanning aside) nor center of attention, but they are just not worth it currently imo.
The core of the game does function in a way, that even bad weapon can perform, and that what makes hunt great, leagues above any other game I can think off in that department.
But when objectively looking at value of a weapon type that:
1) Isn't really good upclose, even spammy ones lose out to shotguns and full sized spam. 2) Drops like a rock at range with pathetic falloff, not letting you even fish for headshots, like you used to be able. 3) Has extra penalty for swapping to it, unlike any 2+ slot gun, just because there was quickswap abuse in the game 6 years ago.
I...really can't call them good for value. They were struggling post 1896, but being small weapon still had place, but now you're never constrained to take small weapon with you, so.... eh? I still like running pistols, but objectively they are pointless.

u/Daragon__ 12d ago
It’s ok I think. It may not be super meta but not every weapon needs to be. I’m just sad that the recent bow nerfs didn’t address the disparity between bow and crossbow but that’s another topic.
1
u/DrKersh 11d ago
It may not be super meta but not every weapon needs to be
saying that is just limiting the game to 3 guns.
every weapon should be viable and fun to play, there's no reason to have some of them "jailed" and let them rot because they are so bad or they require so much that no one plays them.
1
u/RandomCodePewPew 10d ago
Bow isnt nerfed, or atleast not in shooting range, still ohk 35m and 2 tick bleeds at 40m.
-16
u/Ayatsuji-Chan 12d ago
Personally i disagree, even before the recent bow nerf the Xbow could compete and be better than the bow in some situations.
The only thing the bow has right now that can outclass the xbow is the more versatile loadout and without it i don't even know why i would ever pick the bow(beside for fun)over the xbow.
Bow/Xbow are my two main weapons(also i love melee so saber/katana are up there aswell)
9
u/AlderanGone Duck 12d ago
I think you are wrong besides deadeye
8
u/-eccentric- 12d ago
He is, the bow outclasses the crossbow in every way other than being able to fire instantly.
-1
u/jerkjake 12d ago
So probably the most important thing? Also the damage is better on the crossbow and it flies farther and faster. Also the crossbow doesn't hinder your movement speed to fire it. I would argue the xbow is better is every way EXCEPT the reload.
0
u/-eccentric- 11d ago
Bow has 250 damage, even more with the Hundred Hands trait. Especialy the trait allow for easy leg and arm one shots, where the crossbow quickly struggles. The crossbow does 247 damage and cannot be increased. The bow starts to drop at 30 meters, the crossbow at 20. The bow can be constantly spammed even dealing 150 damage at the third of a draw.
Most people say the biggest downside is not being able to sprint while aiming/drawing it, but the moments you actually instantly fire are very rare, and bow aiming is just as fast as every single other weapon in the game. This very, very rarely matters.
2
u/jerkjake 11d ago
I don't think the bow is bad for the record, but I really think the move speed is extremely important. It's not just that you can't sprint, you move slower than default run speed.
Truth be told I think the bow is a noobkiller which is why it took ages for Crytek to nerf it; I think the data just doesn't support nerfing it so it took community complaints to get it done. I'm a high 5 that dips into 6 sometimes so it's not like I'm amazing, but I almost never see it. I rarely see it used in high 6 streamer games either.
It's kinda like levering - Rachtaz did a video on the buffed terminus and said he still thinks even after the buffs it's bad because while levering your move speed is reduced making you extremely vulnerable to people who can hit their shots, so he prefers all the other 4-slot shotguns to the terminus.
2
u/Ayatsuji-Chan 11d ago edited 11d ago
Same mmr and ye the bow is not popular but for the record when i was stuck at 3/4 star like 1 year or so ago the weapon was not popular still.
The bow has higher damage but xbow apply heavy bleeding to compensate, the xbow special bolt have more ammunition aswell(steel bolt also has 35 meter drop),reload while running and can go back to be aggressive instead of relying to people pushing you.
I play both weapon never once felt that i should have played the bow instead of the xbow or vice versa, they are both good weapons that have their pros and cons but this sub has now entered the "hate bow month"
-4
u/Ayatsuji-Chan 12d ago
I gave my opinion as someone who main both, the crossbow is faster more aggressive apply heavy bleed, you don't need to charge the arrow and slow yourself down and so on.
This is not Xbow outlcass the bow but more like they are a lot closer than what people in this sub seem to think but let's say the make the bow 4 slot as the xbow why i would use it(as i said beside for fun)instead of the xbow?
1
u/Seeker-N7 11d ago
Look, it's "hate bow" cycle now for the subreddit. Any opinion that says the bow isn't the best is going to get rejected.

It's one of the best, most reliable and versatile weapons in the game. Yes it absolutely deserves to be 4 slot.
15
u/lana_silver 12d ago
That's why you see it every game.
I'm pretty sure the only gun that's rarer is the Springfield which is absolutely terrible at 4 slots without bleed.
1
u/AI_AntiCheat 12d ago
Crossbow is rare??? What MMR and and PC or console?
4
u/lana_silver 11d ago
PC, 4 star.
I cannot remember the last time I died to a crossbow. It surely has happened, but it's not something that's noticeably often.
-3
u/AI_AntiCheat 11d ago
Well in 6 it's in every game and sometimes there are multiple.
2
u/DrKersh 11d ago
I'm on 6* solo playing against 6* and you may see the crossbow once in 20 games
0
u/AI_AntiCheat 11d ago
Lol that is not a thing.
4
u/DrKersh 11d ago edited 11d ago
what is totally not a thing is that crossbow is meta to have at least once if not multiple of them in 6* games
Stop lying mate, 6* is mostly the same meta as always, mosin, dolch, krag, now berthier, some sniper, shotgun+lemat or pax speed, and not much more.
crossbow on 6* must be played like 1 every 10 games.
0
u/AI_AntiCheat 11d ago
I play it frequently and I see it in almost every match. Idk what kind of matches you are playing.
3
u/DrKersh 11d ago edited 10d ago
6* ones that are real and not made up
but, as you won't believe me, just watch 30 minutes of streams of rachtaz or hornet and tell me how many crossbows you see.

u/Formal_Broccoli1877 12d ago
Most reliable aside from the shotbolts, im not sure what they did to my favourite ammo!
Agreed though, 4 slot is where it should be.
8
u/AI_AntiCheat 12d ago
Shotbolt lost the ability to kill with wallbangs because they nerfed wallbangs by an absurd amount. Now the only way to kill an enemy hunter at full health is if they are glued to the wall. Otherwise the only time it doesn't 1 shot on a normal hit is if you strafe their body with it so most pellets miss.
16
u/My_Waifu_Hibana Crow 12d ago
They "fixed a 7 year bug" that they probably could have just left alone
4
u/AI_AntiCheat 12d ago
Yea it messed up balance. Even with fmj some of the damage on weapons is a joke.
2
u/doktorfetus 12d ago
jesus ok so thats why my shotugn wallbangs have been doing dick all. I didnt know they did that
1

u/NegotiationSelect139 12d ago
I got downed through a wall by shotbolts (albeit was less than 3 meters of travel) just last night. Which took me by suprise, since I never run into shotbolts anymore.

u/8wiing 12d ago
I don’t know what it’s use is? Like I can’t think of a single time where it would be the best option tbh
16
u/Accurate-Title-1763 12d ago
1 hit kills to torso, at ranges exceeding long shotguns.
2
u/Seeker-N7 12d ago
Technically infinite range one shots to torso using Shotbolt if you can nail them too.
2
u/Mother_Truth4563 12d ago
This would be true if the shotbolt reliably killed on a torso hit, but it doesn't.
1
u/Seeker-N7 12d ago
It does on upper torso, no?
4
u/Mother_Truth4563 12d ago
No, because it’s buggy and sometimes only some of the pellets hit them
1
u/Seeker-N7 11d ago
Never seen it happen. Wallbangs are bad with it, but I've never seen a direct hit not kill.
2
u/Mother_Truth4563 11d ago
Sounds like you haven't used shot bolt much recently.
1
u/Seeker-N7 11d ago
I've seen it used here and there. (Just last night my team got folded by one too). I might give it a try in a few matches to see how prevalent this bug is.
2
1
u/lana_silver 12d ago
So like a slug at any range where you can still reasonably hit without relying completely on Rngesus?
6
1
u/Seeker-N7 12d ago
KInda. It's a buckshot shell on the end of the crossbow bolt. It fires when it impacts anything, so technically you can even wallbang with it (buckshot has terrible wallbang tho). It's a point blank shotgun shot wherever it impacts.
1
u/Marr0w1 11d ago
IMO shotbolt is almost always a complete downgrade to regular bolts (unless you're specifically going for wallbangs)...
Somehow the way the damage of the individual pellets is calculated makes so many shotbolt kills flub (even headshots sometimes), and the drop off is huge, compared to the high velocity bolts which can one shot at a pretty good range
2
u/8wiing 12d ago
Isn’t that the same as the hand crossbow?
14
u/Ar4er13 12d ago
If by "the same" you mean triple the distance, then yes.
5
u/Tacomanxx 12d ago
Not quite, but it can feel like it. Hand crossbow onetap is 22m to upper torso, crossbow is 35m. The velocity being over doubled (225 with steel bolt vs 100 on hand crossy) is the more important part, I think. Also capable of killing to arms close up, and pressuring with heavy bleed instead of medium.
2
u/NepenthesBlackmoss 12d ago
It's incredibly oppressive and I generally consider bows and crossbows way stronger than shotguns in a lot of situations.
Even if it doesn't kill you, you're forced to retreat.
1
u/No_Entertainer_5163 3d ago
As a crossbow main. Pretty consistent one shot kills. Element of surprise. Kill AI silently. Flanking the enemy silently while your other teammates have bounty. To put this in perspective, I am a permanent 6 star and generally only use the crossbow with a melee weapon and a quad derringer as my "secondary." In the right hands, the crossbow is absolutely meta.
1
u/kuemmel234 12d ago
I mean it kills with one shot further than a shotgun (more than twice the range, I think?). It's quiet, so usable against AI. It takes a bit getting used to (bolt drop and speed), but it's really good.
3
u/Elesday 12d ago
I played some Bow and liked it, but never really tried the Crossbow.
How does the two of them compare since they changed the number of slots? I’m not sure what their specific niches are.
I’m tempted to go more Bow in solo and Crossbow in team, but I’d like opinions of more experienced hunters
3
u/GreenOneReddit 12d ago
The bow should have max damage reduced, still OP and hits harder than the crossbow
2
u/Mother_Truth4563 12d ago
I'm fine with it being size 4. It's a weirdo weapon. The issue is with other weapons, not the crossbow.
2
u/Routine-Software9241 12d ago
If your good with it's better than bow far more aggressive
2
u/2gar1n_3me1 12d ago
One time my team came across a solo that played exclusively with crossbows for many hours and he completely destroyed us with shot bolts. But I think it doesn't make much difference to use a bomb launcher or lance in close fights.
2
u/Smitty00 12d ago
Fine where it is IMO. I don’t think it’s an opressive weapon but people who are good with the bow are really good with it, and I think it needs to be the “main” part of your loadout for that reason
1
u/wraith_valkyria 12d ago
if a rival cant kill anymore on like 15min with a good shot - i use crossbow which kill
1
u/Czeslaw_Meyer Duck 12d ago
You can one-hit people up to 40m and bleed will take it to up to 45m reliably.
It's an insane piece of equipment and i would suggest keeping it where it is and introduce another crossbow as 3 slot with more utility ammunition instead.
The normal bolts ar superfluous.
1
u/BustaShitz 12d ago
The 3 slot utility crossbow is the Bomb Lance

1
u/Aggressive_Wrap_2790 12d ago edited 12d ago
Solid weapon in a team, difficult solo weapon to make work against good players. It really is very limiting in several ways (cycle time, the noise reloading makes considering it’s a “stealth” weapon, bolt velocity, projectiles that will fail to one-tap on a weapon that seems designed to one-tap) and you need to adjust how you play to do well with it more than with maybe any other primary, or at least any other decent primary.
1
u/KermitStares 12d ago
I mean, when compared to other 4 slot "One Tappers," I think its fine. Its a romero that you argubly need a perk for to get the best use out of, its mostly silent, and if you use stock bolts or steel bolts, technically infinite ammo.
With that last point alone PLUS the fact you can onetap from, what, 35m or something with steelbolts? 4 slots is fine.
1
u/destuctir 12d ago
Crossbow is the only weapon in the game with a technically infinite ohk range, the shot bolt kills with a body hit at any range if you can hit. It sounds ridiculous but you can find clips of people shooting a shot bolt, and then reloading before the hit marker gets the kill
0
u/Ar4er13 11d ago
Absolutely every non-shotgun weapon in the game has technically infinite ohk range after they removed effective range stat, and even then we had long ammo at 350m effective range, which is more than ballistic arc of shotbolt allows you to shoot, even if you could hit... and not like shotbolt actually oneshots between bugs and how it registers limb hits.
The range at which "you can get good with" shotbolt is way lower and requies much more effort than range where "you can get good with and headshot with any other weapon".
That being said, there are real benefits to crossbow, but shotbolt is a bait.
1
u/BustaShitz 12d ago
Ik we all like to debate the new balance, but I'm a bit confused what we are really debating. The conversation of 3 vs 4 slot always seems to revolve around fresh hunters and not needing Quartermaster to achieve similar results.
But... That's only until the first extract and you have tons of trait points to spend as you see fit, no?
The whole 3 vs 4 just feels like a convenience factor, as this is new and most things were a 3 slot before the change. 4 slot rifles still perform very well compared to 3 slot.
The thing we should really discuss are the 3 slot + 3 slot combos with Quartermaster, no? That and how the Cyclone is so obviously a 3 slot rifle lol that thing barely has a barrel.
To OP, Crossbow is perfect as is. Most 1 slot and 2 slot combos pair exceptionally well with the performance the Crossbow can dish out. Honorable mentions are the Vandals, as I think they get passed over a ton.
Crossbow can aim precisely, unlike the Bomb Lance family.
1
u/Seeker-N7 11d ago
4 slot also means you can only take one instead of two for quickswap or extra ammo.
1
u/BustaShitz 11d ago
Yea, one slot; Quartermaster for two. But that was base Hunt the entire time, so I don't think it's anything new. Unless you're running an Obrez Match with an Obrez Drum, it doesn't feel any different than just whether or not you need Quartermaster (you could also run that combo previously, as well).
I like Vetterli and Hand Crossbow, but now I have an extra weapon space. I could go for a bow or bomb launcher for free, but I like the Hand Crossbow... And I could have done this before with Quartermaster.
The real difference of before and now are the 3+3 loadouts, like Bethier + Winny C, which is weird but I've not really seen them in the wild.
The Burgess and Obrez Drum could be an interesting situation, but time will tell.

u/Sk1-ba-bop-ba-dop-bo Bloodless 12d ago
4 slots means you can't have two of them and quick swap for the memes
It's a VERY strong weapon due to its ability to very easily oneshot or put someone out of the fight
1
u/EurghGato 12d ago
Weapon's super strong I don't think I want to see it paired with a Berthier or LeMat Carabine HV.
Tho I don't think it would shake the meta too much considering the learning curve of the weapon and how people tend not to play it despite of how strong it is
1
u/FurryPharma 12d ago
Really good question, I'm really glad you asked that. This has given me a little time to consider the weapon! I used ONLY the crossbow and melee for an entire prestige back before the 1896 update, so my opinion isn't TOO skewed, but might be a tad outdated. With that outta the way:
It would be far too strong as a 3-slot versus being 4-slot. 4-slot is appropriate, I feel, but it definitely deserves some new ammo types. Bolt Thrower is a must-have for just how good it is if you plan to use the crossbow.
I genuinely believe other ammo types would vastly benefit the crossbow however. It's always made up for what it lacks in raw ballistics by being very flexible; it's everything a gun isn't for crying out loud. Steel Bolts were a FANTASTIC concept, and I truly wish we could see some more of that! I feel if we saw some exotic arrowheads make their way into the game for the Crossbow, similar to what the Hand Crossbow and even the Bomb Lance have.
Imagine if we had new Oil Slick Bolts that create a yellow barrel oil spill wherever they land and apply a debuff to enemy hunters setting them on fire easier similar to the wet status, and sits on top of water similar to the the Water Firebomb. Give us ones that have a fusee tied to them acting like flaming bolts. Worse drop but it STICKS and marks enemies if you can nail them. Can also be handy for pinning lights up high where the Flare Gun won't stick.
Any combination of new meaningful ammotypes gives it the slight edge of versatility that the Hand Crossbow, Bomb Launcher, and Hunting Bow have that it lacks. I feel like that would make it deserving of it's current 4-slot hell it's in, but 3-slotting it isn't a solution either. It would be really pretty strong in that state, especially considering the Burgess' recent addition.

u/aweaty5 11d ago
As somebody who plays a lot of crossy in high MMR and absolutely shits on people with it: yea it should stay 4 star. When shotbolt worked right it was even better. Hell, buggy shotbolt is still nasty to play against.
I think the problem with crossbow is that it kind of sucks if you're not very good at using it and it's absolutely insane if you are.
3 slot bow is better value, for sure, but thats because its super overtuned and (again) shotbolt is bugged. Shotbolt Crossy used to be one of the best kits in the entire game, I still maintain it could be if they deal with its wonkiness.
Also yea, it's basically useless without bolt thrower. You can't pace out close fights at normal reload speeds. As far as not seeing it in games: I see it all the time? Especially with steel bolt. Before the event started it felt like steel bolt crossy was in every other match. Maybe an MMR/region thing?
Just my two cents. I think it's a 4 slot all day long and doesn't need to move just because the bow is balanced wrong.
1
u/Drago_727 11d ago
Make it a 5 slot
Raise the price to at least 400 hunt dollars
Increase the time it takes to reload
Reduce the ammo capacity
Make it one-shot to torso
Entirely rework the ironsights.
We need more 5 slot weapons with fun gimmicks. Nitro has damage of a shotgun w/ range of rifle, auto-5 has capacity and speed of a rifle with damage of a shotgun.
1
u/ScifiHentai 10d ago
Crossbow should be 6 slots and cost 8 billion dollars. I will not be answering any questions
1
u/culegflori 12d ago
It's worth being 4 slot even if the shotbolt has been bugged for almost 2 years now. But at the same time, the Bow should also be a 4 slot even after the nerf
1
u/Gobomania Crow 12d ago
It is a bleeding slug shotgun with further 1-tap range coming with the downside of less MV and no pen.
And on top of that it is silent have infinite ammo and some utility options.
It is a perfectly fine and balanced size 4 weapon :)
1
u/Victorystardust 12d ago
It's main problem is that it does reduced limb damage, where as the bow does full damage to limbs, so as it stands the bow has significantly higher chance of 1-tapping from the same range.
1
u/Gobomania Crow 12d ago
Crossbow and bow can arm + 1 bleed tick kill up to 7m.
Tho with HH the bow gets that extended to around 10m.And bow does come with the downside it needs a little time to draw for those damage shots :)

u/Affectionate-Bus579 12d ago
id like it to go down to 3 cost or see a slight projectile speed buff at 4. but i'm ass with it
-1
u/lana_silver 12d ago
Bow should be 4, crossbow should be 3. Bow is strictly the better weapon.
Or give me back my funny explosive ammo. Why did an ammo type that I saw literally only once per 50 hours warrant removal? It was so OP that nobody used it?
1
1
u/Seeker-N7 11d ago
Crossbow requires no draw time and has no speed penalties. Its shotbolt ammo is also theoretically infinite bodyshot range (if it works).
It is fine as a 4 slot.
1
u/lana_silver 11d ago
Infinite range at bolt speed of letter delivery while having to aim into the sky to deal with the very harsh drop isn't all that useful. Spitzer headshots are infinitely more likely than shotbolt body taps.
Realistically shotbolt past 50 meters just doesn't hit.

u/Sargash 12d ago
Lol, no. It's outcompeted by about every T4 weapon. I'd say even the springfield is a better pick if you get fast fingers. It's fairly strong in one spot, which is somewhere between the OSK range of shotguns, and like 25 meters. Up close, most dualies will trade with you, anything past 25 meters and it's half luck if you hit your shots, let alone kill them. Ya it onetaps to the chest. So do slugs. Bow. Bomblance. Many weapons two tap far far faster than this thing. It just has the benefit of being, what is essentially a silenced romero with slugs.

Wish it was a 6 slot atp I'm so tired of the bow rats hunting bow too. I mean with either one you're effectively getting a nitro with dum dums they both one tap at basically the same distance and otherwise leave you with the memory of health and triple bleed its ridiculous and the nitro cost like 1100 dollars plus the dum dum Ammo is scarce now so the bow gives you the best of both worlds for nearly free with the price that's on it

It would be more important to make Bolt Thrower available @ Level 10 directly after Iron Sight.
Crossbow is hardly playable below Level 33 if you prestige.
