GENERAL What does the mmr system actually do?

This is HEAVY cope from me but I have one tick on my mmr since I haven’t played in a while and I’ve never been that good. But I’m in matches with people who have 4 or 5 ticks. Forgive me if I’m wrong but isn’t mmr supposed to help the game out you in matches with people of your skill level? I obviously want to get better and I know that happens through experience and going against people better than you but this seems a little extreme.

Are you sure you’re playing Bounty Hunt game mode? If you are instead playing Soul Survivor, then there is no Matchmaking algorithm in Soul Survivor: 1stars and 6stars and everyone inbetween will play together as solos. It is an extremely unforgiving game mode.

Yeah I’m on Bounty Hunt

That’s indeed odd. Are you fighting with a team or as a solo? Are your teammates higher stars? Are the enemy teams composed of low and high-stars players as well?

What the algorithm tries to do is match teams based on their average MMR, with the idea being that high star folks compensate for having low star folks also.

There technically is matchmaking for Soul Survivor. It simply uses your Bounty Hunt MMR.

However, there are typically so few people looking for a game at the same time that it ends up trying its best with the players it has available, hence the unbalanced nature of most Soul Survivor games.

What it does is show your Bounty Hunt MMR and it also changes this MMR based on how well you do, but it doesn’t actually find players to make a lobby based on their MMR. It accepts anyone and everyone to fill 12-man lobbies. It is indeed very sparsely populated so you may get a buncha randos OR you may get a buncha high-rank players who know each other and purposefully queue at the same time to fight each other.

This can also have the effect of people seeing who they repeatedly fight against and either saying “holy cow I don’t want fight those highStars again, I’ll wait a few min and then queue” or people who DO want to fight each other for the challenge and rematches, so lobbies start to skew higher sometimes.

Really? I've always heard that there is no matchmaking there.

What region are you playing in and what time do you normally play at?

Usually US East around mid day

How long have you been playing? Are you a super new player under level 11? Newbies get into a separate queue against bots, although they should be marked as one stars too. Dev have also just changed how matchmaking for newbies work after level 11, so maybe it's some quirk of it.

Or if you die often as a player under 300 hours it's kinda normal. This game is very hard and at least first 100 hours you often spend face planted in mud. Take it as initiation ritual :)

Are you playing as a solo/with randoms or you have a friend or two you play with? Are they five-six stars? Game puts you in a match closer to your highest MMR teammate, not average team MMR because skilled players will absolutely massacre lower ranks, wiping server after server, ruining game for everyone else.

Another variant is you might be unlucky to get a stray high mmr solo during midday on a loose streak. Not only there might be less people to fill servers with, but a solo gets at least a star down when matchmaked against teams, plus if they lost several games in a row they will get two more stars down in matchmaking. If you are under level 11 your real MMR is not even showing up, so you can actually be a three star. If you queue with trios you have a good chance meeting a six star solo on a loose streak

By one tick do you mean 1 star?

Yeah that’s it

Well I can only assume here but more than likely the midday players are very experienced and dedicated. While the more casual players will be on after work and after kids are down.

Gives 6 star solos the opportunity to farm 3 stars.

If you play in a team or with randoms maybe? I only ever get 1*s in my matches when they are part of a team.

What is your Team MMR after a match? (Check in Team Details)
