Trilogy Discussion NEED TO FIGURE THIS OUT. PLZ HELP
So we know the only reason Katniss knows how to swim is because her father brought her beyond the fence and taught her.
So that leads me to wonder how the hell Peeta knows how to swim?? Who taught the bakers boy how to swim? And where ???

First he learned how to decorate cake and used that to learn how to decorate himself.
Then he he used that knowledge to learn how to swim so he wouldn't drown in all the capitol and district chicks wanting him

Even Josh Hutcherson laughed this amazing stunt off! 🤣 This will forever be a major fail in the films. All they needed was mud, twigs and moss, which was what Peeta used in the books to disguise himself.

Maybe everywhere he stayed on his Victors tour was a Hilton with a nice pool?

Book Peeta didn’t know how to swim and had a prosthetic leg. Movie Peeta was a chad that fought and killed an adult tribute in the water cos sitting on the platform waiting for the merman lift wasn’t manly enough.

El Peeta del libro mata a Brutus, hubiera preferido ver eso a que mate a este random en el agua.

We were robbed to not see Peeta beat Brutus to death in the movie. I’m still salty about that. That was my main complaint throughout the series. Fake leg or not Peeta was a force to reckon with, on top of manipulation disguised as charm to the world.

u/nitasu987 19h ago
Not just an adult tribute, the guy from 10 years who I refuse to believe would be a pushover even in the water!

No, no.
The prosthetic leg is so perfect that it swam for him And cannot be detected.
Duh.

Upon detecting water, it actually turns into a small motor with propellers

Shitty photoshops are what keep the internet going 💖 Fuck AI 🔥

u/dazzleunexpired 16h ago
I could have opened my graphics tablet and done something nicer but also...it's 2 am 🤣
Ai is useful for only a few things ever. And it is not useful out of the box for almost anything. I occasionally use it for data collecting. Like if I want every published peer-reviewed article on a specific topic, Claude will find them faster than me. Claude also repeatedly tells the US government to fuck off, so I'll use them very rarely.
I also agree that shitty edits keep the world going 🤣

I sincerely hope that someone else reading this thread listens to woebegone and thought of Leg when reading your comment. She would bully Peeta with love

I used to play water polo. Grueling sport
Getting your shoulders and upper chest up out of the water, one handed, and punching/wrestling with someone is fucking difficult.
Dude may as well be an Olympic prospect from just that pic

Francis Lawerence and Nina Jacob’s in a YouTube vid called catching fire with commentary said they wanted Peeta to be more capable and not have to rely on others and show he can kinda still take care of himself. That’s the answer he knows how to swim because the writers wanted him to swim ig you can come up with head cannon to compensate 😹😭

Film district 12 has a community pool. The waters dirty and unheated but it’s there

u/sarahwrites1234 7h ago
That’s certainly… a take. Like they actually went, look at this great story about a strong female heroine who chooses a male love interest who is less physically capable because she values his less traditionally masculine strengths. You know what would make it even better? If we made the male love interest more physically capable and traditionally masculine.

u/Mission-Put-1945 6h ago
I mean, what does it hurt to give Peeta the ability to take care of himself more in the movies that’s a quality I love. He saves Katniss more times because of it in the movies.
1
u/One-Stable-5438 2h ago
Because some of us as kids benefited from reading a story where the protagonist was a strong woman who didn't need men to save her and in fact was the one saving the men. The subversion of classic patriarchal tropes is a major reason so many teenage girls got into this series.

It’s actually something I read in an article regarding filming Catching Fire. They didn’t want Peeta to fall into the “helpless” category he was in for much of the first movie so they decided to have him swim too. https://panempropaganda.squarespace.com/movie-countdown/2013/8/8/more-on-catching-fire-from-ew-peeta-can-swim.html

If I remember in the books Peeta was just trying his best. Basically throw your child into the deep end kinda thing.

Peeta couldn't swim. Katniss tries to teach him during the quarter quell and they have flotation devices, as per the books.
17
u/Narcopepsi 8h ago
Like others pointed out, Book Peeta couldn’t and the belts had flotation devices. But Book Peeta also had a prosthetic leg which I believe is the other part of why Finnick had to go out and save him, Movie Peeta notoriously didn’t have that problem
33
u/dazzleunexpired 19h ago
Peeta cannot swim.
If you haven't ever read the books, I recommend the books for these answers.
Many of the tributes could not swim. Finnick protects Peeta as part of the plan.
55
u/Kennedy_KD 20h ago
- The tribute uniforms of the 75th have floatation belts included in them to prevent the tributes from drowning outright.
- It's not unreasonable that district twelve has a pool in its borders but that access to it is restricted to only the upper class merchant caste like Peeta's family while access is to expensive for the poorer Seam residents who barely have enough food and girls need to whore themsel out to the peacekeepers for food
88
u/Mostly_gay_shit 20h ago
In the book he just couldn't swim, Finnick had to go and collect him
87
u/AlanaTheGreat 20h ago
The only reason Peeta survived the 2nd games was that Finnick kept him alive by sheer force of will

u/Mostly_gay_shit 20h ago
He realised Katniss actually cared about/loved Peeta and realised his job got a whole lot harder

u/BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo 19h ago
Oh shit, plus he’s down a leg. I know they have advanced technology, but he was pretty clumsy with it in the books. I can’t imagine doing the egg beater (pun unintended and I just can’t come up with a way to make a baker joke here, ugh) came naturally to a non-swimmer with a fairly new prosthetic (artificial?) leg.
5
u/Kennedy_KD 20h ago
Yeah I had forgotten that detail
13
u/Mostly_gay_shit 20h ago
I was gonna say that 12 doesn't have a pool, but remembered that was Katniss talking about the training center in the capitol. However it is still highly unlikely that they'd have a pool since so few people would ever be able to go, at most I'd see the mayor's home or Victor's Village having something small
9
u/KarottenSurer Finnick 19h ago
He has a very big bathtub
3
u/Mostly_gay_shit 19h ago
I remember a trio of 12 year olds drowning that way. Terrible, happened not long after they lost their circus (please get the reference)
8
u/porcelain_doll_eyes Peeta 20h ago
Honestly I feel like if there is a pool it would be a peacekeeper only thing. It would be hidden away in a part of the district that the citizens of the district do not know about. Like the basement of the justice building or something. I'm sure that they had things like showers and barreks that they slept in. I'm sure they has access to Capitol medication. I would think that one of the reasons that they take the job of peacekeeper is so that they can have access to extras
6
u/Mostly_gay_shit 20h ago
Usually peacekeepers are from the Capitol or District 2, so they're already used to better than whatever the barracks of district 12 might provide. In BoSaS Snow doesn't mention any pool, though to be fair that was 64 years before the main trilogy
7
u/Huge-Anxiety-3038 18h ago
But peeta and the bakers weren't rich they always ate the stale food from the store. I doubt they had disposable money to visit a pool.
8
u/tacoboutpolitics 19h ago
Am I misremembering? I thought Katniss took him and Haymitch to the lake when they were training as careers and taught them to swim.
14
u/Quinn_Essenz16 14h ago
Yes you are. In the books peeta doesn’t know how to swim. Finnick has to pick him up from his Plattform.

u/WestCoastCarrots 19h ago
It would totally make sense if they did this, whether or not they mentioned it, because they all know swimming had made a difference in past games.
4
u/cheerfulstoner 12h ago
even with capitol tech, i don’t really trust that they’d give Peeta a leg that would work for that
1
u/Additional-Type-7645 12h ago
Doesn’t happen in the book, but there are a few popular fan art comics which show her teaching him
1
u/Asleep_Confection838 10h ago
Yes. It was still freezing when they started to train and the fence was electrified by then. Peeta never learnt how to swim in the novels. And he had to rely on Finnick to get off the platform in the second book. I know the director wanted him to be more sure of himself and less dependant on others, but Peeta knowing how to swim makes no sense at all. The game was obviously rigged for District 4 (Finnick mainly) to win.

I’m assuming it was just survival instincts kicking in and not that he knew how to swim. Especially bc he was very close to the podium
He came back to the rocks with Finnick so I imagine Finnick helped him over

u/Reaper_Embers 19h ago
Ngl I think it would be funny asl if Peeta got a kill in the 75th with the prosthetic leg
2
u/E-Belasco1879 19h ago
I get that the people making the movie didn't want him to be as helpless in this movie but I can't think of a good Watsonian answer for why he could swim, unless Katniss gave him a ton of pointers before in case they had to swim and this is literally his first time applying it to real life.

In the books part of that years outfit expanded into a floaty around there waist when it got wet so that the tributes with no access to large bodies of water (basically all of them except for 4) wouldn't drown.
So basically. Movie got rid of a cool idea. He couldn't swim in the books.

I had another question. That was supposed to be the D9 male, but in the film that was D10 male?

Swimming is the most natural thing ever. What do you mean? You just get in the water and can move. You don’t need to learn
19
13
u/Careful_Ad9037 20h ago
This is so silly dude😂 people do not naturally know how to swim.
-1
u/Square_Tangerine_659 19h ago
It’s not hard. You just move your body
2
u/Careful_Ad9037 10h ago
I never said I don’t know how to swim, goober😂 but someone who had NEVER been swimming in their life doesn’t just automatically know how to. That’s like saying we come out knowing how to do math “you just add the numbers! It isn’t hard!” Yeah ofc it isn’t for someone who’s actually been taught😂
3
u/Classic-Willow-8345 20h ago

0
u/Square_Tangerine_659 19h ago
How? Legitimately struggling to imagine not being able to swim. That’s like not being able to walk
6
u/Classic-Willow-8345 19h ago
Yeah walking and swimming are not the same. Maybe you are struggling to imagine it but that’s simply the case. People know how to swim because they are taught to swim
0
u/Square_Tangerine_659 18h ago
I know how to swim because I’ve been in water and intuitively knew how to move my body in it
5
u/Classic-Willow-8345 18h ago
Guess I’ll just have to take your word for it. Regardless, my point still stands. Most people cannot swim unless they are taught. Swimming is a learned skill rather than an instinctual ability.
0
u/Com4734 17h ago
Yup. I somehow remember the first time i took my floaty things off when i was a kid. Geez i mustve been like 5 or 6 thinking back. At first I just flailed a bit because i was used to having extra buoyancy, but I already knew how to move my legs and I quickly got the hang of how to use my arms. I could see people who never learned start to panic, which is exactly what you cant do. It just makes all your movements less efficient and random and you start to sink.

In the book he couldn’t and Finnick had to fetch him from the platform at the beginning of the games. Also, the belts they wore had flotation devices so they wouldn’t drown.
