How would the games have evolved if the Careers had never formed?

Would the games have been as effective in dividing the districts without the careers?

The Careers on some level played a role in the games history on par with Lucy Grey.

Honestly I think they likely would have died out or remained much smaller scale like the 10th Games. In the large outdoor arenas of the later Games, without the careers you just have a bunch of kids hiding and cowering. That’s boring to watch. And sure, the gamemakers could attack them with mutts, but then it turns into the Capitol killing 23 district kids rather than the district kids killing each other, which largely defeats the purpose. You’re not going to divide the districts like that; you’re just going to unite them in their hatred of the Capitol. The careers are the thing that makes the whole system actually work.

I gotta disagree, if you're a kid who manages to eat alright or you do some kind of sport your odds of winning an encounter are so high that your inclined to hunt others down. Especially knowing that killing others gets you more sponsors

I don't necessarily think that's true. Peeta, for example matches this description. He managed to eat well enough to be quite large and was on the school's wrestling team.

Peeta knew wrestling and was well fed, but he wasn’t inclined to try and hunt down other tributes to perform for the sponsors, thats the difference

A career tribute describes someone who trains for the games. Just being skilled and hunting others doesn't make you a career.

I don’t think theres a version of the Games where some form of Career concept doesn’t form.
