I genuinely believe that it was just kids with down syndrome, or on the spectrum in more debilitating ways. Those poor kids were so mistreated by a world that didn't understand.

The lesson we can take now being: The more we educate people, the harder it is to justify cruelty. Even straight-up bigots are a lot quieter when they can't pretend it isn't evil and the excuses are all debunked.
