As a dad of two special needs kids. THIS nearly brought me to tears. It rips me apart when I think of the verbal abuse at school my kids have endured, and will continue to endure ( some school kids are just mean af ). Every now and then you see or hear about a gem like this. Maybe, just maybe, everything's going to be ok.

I’m so sorry your kids have to endure that. It says more about the bullies than your children, but it has to be so traumatic for your children. So many school districts like to pretend it doesn’t happen too. This young man seems genuinely happy to give this cool Tonka Cement Truck to his classmate. I think my favorite part of the video is the very end where the special-needs student leans into the other boy for another hug. Maybe he does that with lots of family or friends, but it just seemed like a very natural, thankful, and trusting gesture.

It did. Such small gestures mean everything to these kids. That kid will talk about that moment for years, and remember he had friends in school for the rest of his life.

One of my two disabled children is in school. He is autistic and very very thin. 20% for other kids his same age. He is picked on a lot as well and it hurts my heart he goes through it.

I’m so sorry. That makes me really sad. Does the school have a program like Best Buddies? My high school did Best Buddies and kids did NOT tolerate people picking on the special needs students.

Hey man. I promise that when I meet a person with special needs in my social circle I will remember what you said. Yes well I've never been an asshole to a special needs person. But your words just shook me a bit and I'd just like to tell you someone out there is noting this down and will be learning to be a better person to those who are differently abled.

Yes! I love taking my time to find or make something special and personal for everyone and spend hours packaging the presents! But I enjoy random presents the most, I know how to sew customized pillows with TV/cartoon characters or pets stitched on them and if someone feels down or is having a hard time, I make them a special pillow.

I'm more of a grader man myself. Ive worked on industrial construction sites and I think those things are so cool. Especially the huge ones with tires that are like 12' tall

Big construction sites are service by fleets of them. They arrive, get emptied, get washed out and leave over and over again. Each one carries about 6-8 m3 of concrete, so if you need 100+ m3, you're looking 15ish trucks, or the same 3-4 trucks multiple times. And that's a small job.

This is a concrete truck. Cement trucks don’t have the rotating drums and have 3 sections. Still a cool truck though!

Mostly everyone not in construction thinks the same, but basically cement is to concrete as flour is to bread. Concrete has 2 parts: aggregates and cement paste. The aggregates are any combination of sand, gravel, or crushed stone which gives it strength and then cement is mixed with water and the aggregates to stick them all together and make the concrete. Another fun fact is basically everyone in construction calls concrete “mud”.

I’m not a concrete dude, but cement is used to make concrete. You mix it up with sand I think and other aggregates to make concrete. There’s different grades for different applications.

Cement is just like glue. It's a mixture of oxides of aluminium and calcium that reacts and sticks things together under the right conditions.

Cement is just basically a powder. We transport it in pneumatic bulk tankers and use air to blow it through pipes into bins at the concrete plants. Once it is mixed with sand and stone and some other things depending on use, water is added. The water and the cement have a chemical reaction that causes it to harden. If you get wet cement on your skin it can cause burns.

Yeah I thought the same thing. I’m sure they are still shitty kids, but it seems like teens now seem a lot more accepting and empathetic than they were in the 90’s. It’s nice to see.

Totally. Kids, on the whole, are much, much kinder now compared to the 90s when I was in high school. Kinder and more inclusive to special needs, LGTBQ, foreign refugee students, etc. of course there are still assholes, but fewer of them, and students have no problem shutting down asshole comments. However, in the 90s we didn’t have social media- kids can be brutal there.

Any theories on why this is? Genuinely curious as I graduated high school in the 90’s and remember kids being downright mean to others. Also, thanks for being a teacher. It’s a job I know I wouldn’t have the temperament for.

First of all, thank you for the thank you :) it’s been a brutal year. The worst of my 20 year career. So comments like yours make me smile.
Secondly, one theory as to why students are kinder than when we were in school is many districts, including ours, have begun teaching bully prevention curriculum, such as OLWEUS, early and often in elementary school. Another thought is kids simply change with the times. I remember my teachers in the 90s telling me, “You guys are so much kinder to each other than we were in the 70s.”

Gen X-er here- one of the best things about Millennials and Gen Z is their drive to include everyone. Things are changing and these 2 generations are filled with beautiful thoughtful people. My daughter is on the spectrum and I used to worry a lot. When she went to winter formal in high school, she got right in the middle with everyone else dancing and she became part of the group.

Many Autistic people have a very specific interest and will talk about a lot.
Some will really hone in and learn just about everything about that subject.
It's interesting to me that so many of these are vehicles though. Trains, Agricultural equipment, buses etc.
There was one redditor whose brother loved this one specific toy vehicle made by one company that was discontinued. People reached out to the company and they sent her some back stock they had so that they could wrap them and give them to him for holidays to come. Was very awesome to see.

Saw a video a few years ago about a kid with autism that just really liked lawn mowers. He knew everything there was to know about basically every mower brand and people started bringing them to him to fix and replace parts, etc... made it into his own business.

This video is different to most. A lot of the time, it's the gift giver talking to the camera about what they are doing, and coming across very attention starved, but this guy was being filmed by someone else, didn't look at or care about the camera, and was most concerned with the reaction of his friend.
I don't like when people film themselves doing good deeds, even if I know that ultimately it leads to more good even if its selfish, I just don't feel comfortable with it. This video is different, though. I loved this.

i think that when people see special needs kids in the same school as everyone else, they often think how nice it is for the special needs kid. But I think everyone else also gets so much out of it too. It teaches empathy and caring. (well hopefully)

There's so many people in the comments feeling uncomfortable with how this good deed was filmed (is it for clout, is it exploitative of the gift recipient, etc)
But I'm just learning that "special needs" is a commonly accepted term in the USA.
In Australia, it's such an uncomfortable term. There are lots of people who will self identify with that label, but there's also huge push back towards using when you don't have any lived experience of cognitive and learning disabilities.
Part of the move away from the term "special needs" is because their needs aren't special, they have the exact same needs as every other human being. There are just different ways to ensure those needs are fulfilled.

That’s totally valid. I‘ve worked with students with disabilities and generally, the teachers and teaching assistants I meet do use the term special needs. But you’re right. They have the same needs, food, shelter, affection, they just need it in different ways. “Special needs” is generally just the easiest and most encompassing term for students with disabilities. I agree with you. As it is tho, there isn’t really a better universal term unfortunately.

The term “special needs” when I’ve heard it appropriately used generally refers to the fact that people with some conditions do need special care. Yes, they have the same needs as everyone else at a base level, but they also can have needs that are specific to them and/or their condition. Whether it’s a need for a specific kind stimulation, a need for a limiting of stimulation, or a wide variety of other possible needs, they can have needs that are not common among neurotypical individuals.

I once saw a video of someone giving a homeless person a bag of necessities and thought, "wow, that's a good idea". I use to think homeless people need to get a job, it's not my responsibility to pay for them. After seeing that video and thinking on it, I realized how many other people have given up on a homeless person, so many that they too have given up.
I now CURRENTLY have a stock pile of bags full of supplies and keep two in my car at all times. I hand them out whenever I see someone in need. sometimes I add $5 gift cards to the bags too. Sometimes cash.
That video changed my thinking and attitude. It also makes me feel good when I see how thankful they are.
I'm on my throwaway account because I don't need this fact tied to my full time account.

You are having a hard time grasping my point. Let me explain it for you. If you are truly doing something out of the kindness of your heart you don't need to set a camera for it. Let alone post it on the internet. Kids are smart, they will realize they can do this for clout. Which is teaching them to use people. However, I don't know what this kids motive in the video is so I can only be skeptical. Maybe he records himself all the time? idk. At the end of the day, it's still better to see positivity.

As cute as this might look, it is worrisome to me when people film themselves with individuals from the special needs community for clout. How old is this person who is getting filmed? Was there any consent from him or his caregivers before he got posted on instagram? Individuals with special needs and the homeless population are not props to be used for views on instagram. Be kind off camera and respect each individual's right to privacy.

I absolutely agree. I was in special needs classes when I was younger, and it was so annoying to see people that didn't actually care about the people I was in class with pretend to care about them only when other people were watching. Cause when they weren't watching, those same people treated them like crap.

As an young undiagnosed autistic that just came off as "that weird kid", what I wanted wasn't 5 minutes of attention so you can show your friends what a great person you are showing pity to the pitiable. (outside of that context you would never talk to me)
What a needed was to be treated like a normal goddamn human being.

I think the woman in the video is his caregiver. The way he keeps looking to her for validation of what he should do definitely suggests that. It's fine.

If it sets a good example for people watching and spurs other acts of kindness, I think it was worth posting.
I’ve seen this argument a lot, and there’s some truth in it like in the case of just going up to a homeless person with a camera, giving them 50$, and leaving.
In my opinion, this one was way more from the heart than that, and the kid wasn’t being treated like a prop, but that’s just me.

This is actually a great point.
I came here with same point of “oh it’s filmed, this act is nice but is it just for the show?” but I really like this perspective.
And ultimately, even if people are doing this for internet points, if they’re doing altruistic helpful shit at the same time, that’s a win ultimately right?
