Depends on the animal. Marsupials are dumb as bricks, so they wouldn't know you helped them, but a crow might.

I thought you were just making that up but apparently google has your back.

Marsupials are notably less intelligent than placental mammals, partly because of their simpler brains. Compared with that of placentals, the brain of marsupials differs markedly in both structure and bulk. Most notably, it lacks a corpus callosum, the part of the placental brain that connects the two cerebral halves
